It's a deeply cynical move on Universal's part, and Blumhouse's too in some respects. It says, "It's a known brand, it's October, and people will go regardless of the movie's actual merits or lack thereof. They are suckers." We'll see on Monday if they are in fact so easily led. I'm dreading being proven right. Heck, The Nun 2 is still doing business, so cynical may be the only strategy you need.
Apparently Universal HAD to promise a trilogy in order to secure the rights, and they had to get Peacock to agree to do the sequels if need be in order to promise that the sequels would be made one way or another (considering Peacock’s involvement in the deal and the fact that this was before the streaming bubble began to burst, $400 million is not all that shocking (if still ridiculous)).
1:30. Ellen turned it down 3x. When they came to her yet again, she came up with the highest asking price she could think of...and doubled it. They agreed to her offer. She donated the movie to a performing arts scholarship. She said she wanted to guarantee something good would come out of this. She truly seems like a lovely lady.🤗
The red flags were all over the trailer. No amount of deception or nostalgia bait in the trailer could fool anyone with an IQ larger than their shoe size that this movie would be awful.
WAIT! Dan, you’re right about the horror nights thing! Back in 2016, it was the highest rated haunted house by guests and brought in a ton of the religious Hispanic community in LA. They’ve brought it back in 2021 because it was so successful, and opened haunted houses in LA and Orlando this year based off believer before it even came out (both haunted houses are getting great reviews, believe it or not)!
I agree. Whether an A24 exorcist movie would have worked or not, it would at least have been more interesting and less lazy than what we got from this movie.
There have been so many Exorcist movies which most of them attempted to make a direct sequel to the original to the point i lost count how many Exorcist movies that we have so i just concluded that the only Exorcist movie that is canon is just the original and the third movie which the latter is extremely underrated
The Exorcist-William Friedkin,William Peter Blatty The Exorcist II:The Heretic-John Boorman The Exorcist III-William Peter Blatty Dominion:Prequel to the Exorcist-Paul Schrader Exorcist;The Beginning-Renny Harlin The Ninth Configuration-William Peter Blatty(Honorable Mention-Definitely a "part"of the Exorcist Trilogy:)
The only major problem I have with Exorcist 3 is that they felt the need to shoehorn an exorcism into it (the novel, Legion, didn't have one). Sounds like that's the biggest problem with this one too.
@@derkeheath5172As back as I can remember, that was studio interference from Morgan Creek who wanted the exorcism scene at the end, not Blatty. Blatty never wanted that to end the movie
@@ryangettig274Blatty is a smart writer and why the first and third worked. Also, the reason the Ninth Configuration is likely fevered. Friedkin was psychotic, but knew how to direct.
I didn’t expect it to come anywhere near the original, but I expected it to be a competent possession movie. I found that it just had a lot missteps. First of all, there’s something about the characters that I just did not find engaging or likable, especially the father. The only character actually liked was the nun. Second, the movie was middling and unfocused.
The trailer for this movie was the most generic horror crap I've ever seen. When they trotted out Ellen Burstyn looking bored, I knew exactly what a cash-grab affair this thing was. I'm staying away, as I imagine most people will.
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that Olivia Marcum looked like a young Linda Blair. If the writers paid so much money for Ellen Burstyn's character, they should've at least given her more screen time in the film, instead of her just being a cameo.
But Green has made some good movies too like Joe, Snow Angels, Prince Avalanche, Stronger. He should just make drama movies instead of horror movies like this
I went into this movie completely blind. I avoid horror movie spoilers of any kind. Had no idea who worked on. About half way through the movie, I leaned over to my husband and whispered “this is giving me evil dies tonight vibes”. Please stop letting this guy destroy classic movies. This so damn bad.
Morgan Creek really SHOULD have just tried to revive the 2016-2017 FX series. FX cancelling it after two seasons was a huge mistake. That show was how to follow-up a classic excellently. Outside that, only the original 1973 film, Exorcist 3 (1990), and Dominion-Prequel To The Exorcist (2005) are worth seeing.
So, they decided to destroy Chris MacNeil, the same way they destroyed Laurie Strode, eh? Do these guys have mommies issues? The character of Laurie Strode had the IQ, solid upbringing and resourcefulness to cope with her trauma and live a normal enough life - as in Halloween H2O but they decided to completely annihilate her - make freak out of her. The character of Chris MacNeil most certainly had the emotional resources to carry on without being destroyed too. This team has no idea what a compelling story is. They need to stick to brutalist, over the top humor. You couldn't pay me to watch this movie but I am interested in hearing reviews.
I thought the EXACT same thing about the "the smell got worse" line...i literally rolled my eyes at it. The movie was fine. It's pretty well made but it just shouldn't have been an exorcist sequel. It wasn't shocking like the original. Hell i thought they were gonna go overboard but they actually didn't do enough.
It’s a tragedy that the original writer and director of this movie (both dead - sadly) decided not to give us a real continuity to The Exorcist. The closest we have is Exorcist III which is pretty solid. Pleas skip the 2nd one and all those prequels. Apparently this franchise is really cursed.
Ann Dowd now has the distinction of being in one of the best possession movies of the past 20 years (HEREDITARY) and one of the worst (EXORCIST: BELIEVER).
The movie was in the wrong hands basically. This director is… questionable and he instantly puts me off any movie that he is involved with. I really wanted this to be good.
I cannot stress enough how spot on Dan is with his review. I just got out of the theater and this movie is a parody level movie that takes itself seriously. IMHO 😅
Honestly, I liked 10 seconds of the earthquake, the general effort of the girls, and Regan hugging Chris. Everything else was garbage. 1.5/10 or half-star. .
I drive trailers for a living and I can be on the road 28 out of 30 days in a month. Yesterday I had one day off and went to see this movie & I can say it was so bad I've decided not to go to movies again & just stick with my dvd collection.
Evil dies tonight! If Universal gave Green a remake of Frankenstein it would be from the viewpoint of the villagers with Guy with Torch the main protagonist, and Pitchfork Guy the second protagonist.
I wish movie studios killed The Exorcist, Terminator, and Halloween franchises. They don't hold the same weight anymore. These films were flashes in a pan! You can't replicate lightning in a bottle, when you're trying to hurl bottles at clouds!
The Exorcist was the second scariest movie I've ever seen. The only scarier movie I ever saw was The Wizard of Oz. Seriously, I found the Wicked Witch of the West TERRIFYING as a very young child, While my father took me to see many age-inappropriate films as a kid, The Exorcist was fortunately not one of them. I saw Exorcist II the Heretic on a late late movie when I was a teenager. That was truly awful. I liked Exorcist III quite a bit. I watched most of the first season of The Exorcist TV show with Geena Davis before dropping off. ***SPOILER WARNING*** After the big reveal that Geena Davis was actually playing Regan all grown up with a changed name to avoid publicity because her mom wrote a book about her exorcism, I really thought it was a shame her role wasn't played by Linda Blair. I suppose the reveal would have been less of a surprise, but it would have still been cooler. Sharon Glass played her mom in the TV show and was fine, but it would have been better with Ellen Burstyn.
Lol you too? That wicked witch really got me as well: the particular part in the tornado, morphing from the bicycle to the broomstick, and in black and white. That was soooo disturbing for my young mind. The only time I've ever had a movie nightmare was about 50 years ago: Leonard Nimoys in search series: in search of Dracula. In it there was shown the few seconds of Max Shreks creeping shadow from the 1922 Nosferatu, years before I saw the movie. Just so creepy... I'd like to say I loathe exorcist II, however a) had Richard Burton so still utter shite movie but it had Richard Burton. B) had some really good little ideas, but completely wasted. I mean the fact that the now recovered Regan has this automatic ability to heal. What a really, really interesting idea: that went absolutely nowhere. Shame there's not more of that kind of thoughts in these movies, just add more jumpscares, yeah: really thought provoking...
1:44 and later in the movie she says “we’ve met before” No, the demon was Pazuzu in the original, and in the credits of this movie the demon is named lamashtu, so you can’t even justify her appearance on a her and the demon interact with each other again argument.
The studios are looking more and more like bad poker players. They don't have any good plan or cards, then say "let's try to fool everyone and go all in!" (400 millions for a dead franchise, 700 millions for a fantasy spin off that can't use any original stories ) only they used this move too many times and nobody is buying their trick. And they do it over and over because they have no clue on how to attract the public. It feels like the beginning of the end
God, I enjoyed this. It's true to say that you shouldn't judge a film without seeing it but also, you know, fool me four times... I'm done with supporting this kind of movie, where even the concept is lazy. The trailers did zero to distinguish the movie from (insert low budget Exorcism film at the bottom of the Prime Video barrel). And that "body and the blood" clip is laughable. The repetition horror trope should have ended with "you'll float too". I rarely actively wish for failure when it comes to entertainment but somebody needs to learn a lesson here.
I'm a big fan of the OG Exorcist story (movie and book), and I consider it to be deeply disturbing, yet intelligent, respectful and highly spiritual. This movie missed the mark because its a superficial cashgrab. A pity.
After just watching Ellen Burstyn in the previews for this “movie,” I would say I haven’t seen anyone mail it in so much since Lincoln, Montana had a fine gent near the post office named Ted Kaczinski.
2:45 "They put her there to be in the trailer." 💯 They did the same with DIAL OF DESTINY. They brought back fan favorite, SALLAH and when people saw it in the trailer fans interest in the movie increased (before the mixed reviews). He's in the film for less than five minutes and he basically doesn't do anything. They're relying too much on nostalgia bait.
Dan, I appreciate your open disdain for these cynical money grabs exploiting iconic titles. Imo, Blumhouse/Universal and who ever takes future ownership of "The Exorcist" franchise should just rerelease the film every Halloween season. If they have to make new content to keep the franchise, maybe make an accompanying anthology of shorts related to the exorcist themes. Horror anthologies were really fun back in the day.
Absolutely despise when they do this to characters brought back for a legacy sequel! They're always washed up, alienated, depressed. Can't they have a relatively happy life after the events of the last movie? The characters went through so much, but guess what, they've been miserable for 20+ years.
At a loss for words at how much I despised this movie. The more I think about it the angrier I get. Not an original thought or idea or scare in this fucking thing and it’s pathetic.
I was so hyped for Halloween 2018 that I actually watched the film on Halloween night, with my costume on. I left so utterly disappointed that it almost ruined my night. I gave Halloween Kills a chance and I regreted it. Whatever David Gordon Green does, I'm just staying away. He does not get what made those original films so great, he just doesn't.
Another awesome review, thank you Dan!... I love the way you give a variety of perspectives to you're reviews...Sometimes you give a lil bit of film history, you go in on the plot and the reasons why it did or did not work for you; that in turn gives those of us who have or haven't seen the film, an understanding in a non-biased way if it's for us or not. I also like how you break down facts on actors, directors, and even studio deals; you are thorough my friend! The clip from Star Wars was perfect, and I personally hated the 2nd two installments to the 2018 Halloween, so I love the thought process you had and the way that you addressed the director and studios choices in terms of how they're handling these properties... Keep up the great work...
I live in Orlando and I go to the houses. I did the house watched the movie and did the house again. It changed how I saw it and it’s not a bad or good movie same with house, lines are long. If they included what happened in the house… in the movie… they would of had a different movie All together
Why give him this after the last two Halloween movies? Look what JJ Abrams to Star Trek and then they gave him Star Wars to run into the ground. I guess a lot of it is - quoting Swan from Phantom of the Paradise - "I abhor perfection in anyone besides myself".
The Exorcist, The Shining, Poltergeist to name a few horror blockbusters. They worked because all of these directors were not horror movie directors but they all wanted to make at least one horror film. Not to mention they were class A directors. Something missing desperately in the horror genre. It’s a shame that the scariest horror movie of all time got raped for its name and used for let’s be honest for profit.
I couldn't have said it better myself. The Shinning and The Exorcist are my two favorite horror films of all time. Also being in my top ten favorite films of all time list as well. All though Tobe Hooper did direct Texas Chainsaw Massacre before Poltergeist.
A great director can work any genre. It's ridiculous to say they are not "horror directors". I am so sick of people who try to diminish horror like you just did and others who use buzzwords like "elevated horror". If it's a great horror movie, then it's a great movie in the horror genre. If a director makes a great horror movie than that director IS a great horror director. Plain and simple. The insulting pretentiousness of people who diminish horror movies has made those who have only directed horror movies fewer opportunities to direct in other genres.
Remaking a classic is foolish. No one has ever been able to capture the atmosphere and style which made these movies great. Second, why not remake bad movies so that they are good instead of attempting to remake a beloved classic and ruining it?

George Washington, Joe, Eastbound and Down and The Righteous Gemstones are all excellent. He needs to recognize what he's good at - it definitely isn't horror franchises.
Way to discount his work.
@@derkeheath5172 Even if he wants to do horor, he should just make his own original material rather than dealing with a huge IP like this. I'd be fine if he takes his own idea and just squanders it but taking a huge iconic movie and make a sequel and just squanders it like that, it makes me upset
@rorschach36except that “Your Highness” was great
It's a deeply cynical move on Universal's part, and Blumhouse's too in some respects.
Crazy how they thought this shit movie would succeed but thought fnaf would bomb
The Nun(2018) was an incredibly atmospheric and perfect horror film, it was a huge hit
I mean, the film’s tanking next weekend anyways as theaters are going to need as many auditoriums as they can to handle the demand for Swift.
@@forsaken841I would also like to point out that this deal was made before Halloween Kills came out, so DGG’s career wasn’t tainted at that point.
Let’s put David Gordon Green on a time-out.
A film about a demon filled teenage girl,
Fearful of teenage girls coming to theaters...
The red flags were all over the trailer. No amount of deception or nostalgia bait in the trailer could fool anyone with an IQ larger than their shoe size that this movie would be awful.
The exorcist tv show was actually pretty good! Kinda an odd ball series but yeah!
Great twist in that!
Yup. It was much better than it should have been. I really enjoyed it. I'll be staying well away from Believer tho.
Hell yeah! There's a pretty wild reveal that happens in the middle of season 1 that I still think about to this day.
I loved the tv show!
I liked it, shame that it was cancelled after two seasons
This franchise needs an exorcist.
😂😂
😂😊
The fate of Katherine was actually very disturbing...
A24 should of handled this. But I think A24 knew better
I agree. Whether an A24 exorcist movie would have worked or not, it would at least have been more interesting and less lazy than what we got from this movie.
A Catholic, a Southern Baptist, a Charismatic, an Atheist and a Voodoo Priestess walk into an exorcism.....
Affirmative Action they call it.
There have been so many Exorcist movies which most of them attempted to make a direct sequel to the original to the point i lost count how many Exorcist movies that we have so i just concluded that the only Exorcist movie that is canon is just the original and the third movie which the latter is extremely underrated
The Exorcist-William Friedkin,William Peter Blatty
The Exorcist II:The Heretic-John Boorman
The Exorcist III-William Peter Blatty
Dominion:Prequel to the Exorcist-Paul Schrader
Exorcist;The Beginning-Renny Harlin
The Ninth Configuration-William Peter Blatty(Honorable Mention-Definitely a "part"of the Exorcist Trilogy:)
@@800Ms-k6nSpot On Correct.
I would only be on board for the sequels if they give the reigns to the franchise to Leigh Whannell after how well he updated The Invisible Man.
The original and Exorcist 3 are the only ones we should acknowledge exist lol
The Beginning was almost good. Got real corny at the end and ruined it
@@darktower0603 the fuckin cgi was atrocious😭
The trailer for this movie was the most generic horror crap I've ever seen. When they trotted out Ellen Burstyn looking bored, I knew exactly what a cash-grab affair this thing was. I'm staying away, as I imagine most people will.
I laughed so hard when the priest comes in bursting with his holy prayers near the end then he didn’t last long. Lol terrible filmmaking right there
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that Olivia Marcum looked like a young Linda Blair. If the writers paid so much money for Ellen Burstyn's character, they should've at least given her more screen time in the film, instead of her just being a cameo.
It was an insult to both Friedkin and Blatty and the legacy name they hung on the door.
"Admirable serviceable" was a very kind description of Bursten's performance. 😂
Destroying good old things seem to be a Big Trend now.
I disagree sometimes reboots and rumors are good for a franchise
Bad sequels a new trend, pfft.
"Your Highness" (2011) was an early warning: David Gordon Green makes horrible movies.
But Green has made some good movies too like Joe, Snow Angels, Prince Avalanche, Stronger. He should just make drama movies instead of horror movies like this
He's good at TV comedy direction too: Eastbound and Down, Vice Principles, and The Righteous Gemstones.
The Taylor Swift movie looks scarier than this Exorcist movie.
😂agreed🎉
Makes me wonder what the difference is between a typical IMAX experience and the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour IMAX experience.
I have six tickets for Imax Lincoln Square in NYC if anyone wanna join haha I might have over bought tickets 🎟️
Well to be honest the Taylor Swift cult is scarier than most horror movies
Yeah right lol 😂 somehow I high doubt that bruh lmfao 🤣 man
Morgan Creek really SHOULD have just tried to revive the 2016-2017 FX series. FX cancelling it after two seasons was a huge mistake. That show was how to follow-up a classic excellently.
Outside that, only the original 1973 film, Exorcist 3 (1990), and Dominion-Prequel To The Exorcist (2005) are worth seeing.
This movie is the Gen Z TikTok version of The Exorcist
Said by the Boomer wannabe
I really liked The Exorcist TV series and was sad it was canceled.
“It is a horror upon the senses”

What could be more scarier is Taylor Swift, potentially destroying this movie's second week numbers.
Taylor Swift will likely blow out this movie.
The Exorcist dies tonight!
Loved the Nute Gunray cameo!
IMHO 😅
I watched it today too and I almost fell asleep. I was literally fighting to keep my eyes open.
I heard from a friend it was lacky at most. I stayed home and Netflix- chilled "Nowhere" flick. Very good movie.
Honestly, I liked 10 seconds of the earthquake, the general effort of the girls, and Regan hugging Chris. Everything else was garbage. 1.5/10 or half-star.

Can't wait for Green's take on the Omen series.😂
This kind of filmmaking used to just annoy me, but now it's starting to make me mad.
Office Space Roommate: two exorcism chicks at the same time
If it wasn't for the success of Halloween 2018, Green would be directing Tubi movies.
I'd rather "the biggest risk" a studio takes be something like Malignant
"From the director of Pineapple Express and His Highness...."
All I needed to know.
Dan , Thanks Much !.......
1:44 and later in the movie she says “we’ve met before”
No, the demon was Pazuzu in the original, and in the credits of this movie the demon is named lamashtu, so you can’t even justify her appearance on a her and the demon interact with each other again argument.
Should have mentioned John Constantine in the movie and then bring back keanu's Constantine universe.
Id have given that 400 million dollars to Mike Flanagan to make a supernatural trilogy. At least they would be good movies.
This is the first movie that compelled me to remember filmmakers specifically to AVOID them in the future.
And, the woman who deleted her baby is trying to do an exorcism. What a joke.
To me David Gordon Green and Danny McBride became David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of the horror genre.
They don't get a cent from me anymore.
Why McBride thought he could write a horror movie is beyond me . He’s great at comedy though
The next film in the series will have Angela trying to contact Katherine's spirit and she gets re-possessed.
Dan, I really love it when you don’t pull any punches. Your rants are so epic and entertaining! Cheers!
As soon I seen Green was involved that was a red flag after his Halloween abominations I will watch it out of curiousty.
2:45 "They put her there to be in the trailer."
💯
They did the same with DIAL OF DESTINY.
The second Ellen enters that room by herself w. The demon… yeah this is not gonna go well”
Just what no one asked for, a new Exorcist trilogy
Easily one of my most favorite reviews ever 🤣. I am so happy this movie was made, solely because it allowed this review to exist.
@@TheJaker5 THANK YOU. I'm a 70's child and this movie was pure garbage. Nowhere near the original. I agree with you!
Absolutely despise when they do this to characters brought back for a legacy sequel! They're always washed up, alienated, depressed. Can't they have a relatively happy life after the events of the last movie? The characters went through so much, but guess what, they've been miserable for 20+ years.
I’m honestly glad this thing is terrible. I want it to bomb at the box office, get that evil out of here
Lol
I love fans that are happy when movies fail...
Why did you want it to be bad?!?
Hopefully evil dies this weekend at the box office.
Or just don’t be a snowflake and don’t watch?
Thanks Dan. Goodnight, Sir
Gotta love that Nute Gunray cameo !!
Why give him this after the last two Halloween movies?
Look what JJ Abrams to Star Trek and then they gave him Star Wars to run into the ground.
I guess a lot of it is - quoting Swan from Phantom of the Paradise - "I abhor perfection in anyone besides myself".
I hated the fact they could not decide on voices. Just use a couple voices similar to the original.
@@danielneil237Except Dr Sleep was a good sequel.
Pazuzu dies tonight!
Remaking a classic is foolish. No one has ever been able to capture the atmosphere and style which made these movies great. Second, why not remake bad movies so that they are good instead of attempting to remake a beloved classic and ruining it?
