  • I33 has some really interesting techniques in, some look ridiculous, but with a buckler, seem to work.
Will this translate over to working with a Viking round shield? Let's find out.
Why should you listen to me?
Well, my only real qualifications is having long hair and being on the internet. Which is pretty standard for most HEMA influencers... Not good enough for you?
I've not been doing Hema a long time, but for pretty much all of it, I've trained Arming Sword and Viking Round shield.
I spar once a week and use the shield most weeks.
Now, there's a few great people in the Order of the Blade who have been teaching me shield work. I've learned tons from them!!
My only issue, is now I want to defeat all other shield users in the order...
So I'm forced to look elsewhere for techniques and cheat codes.... this has brought me to I33.
I hated bucklers before I ever used one. What's the point in some tiny useless shield?
First time I picked one up and sparred with it, I bloody loved the damn thing. I hate myself for it up to this day... but I can't deny, bucklers are actually sick (English slang for cool).
Thing is, there's tons of resources, manuals and such for buckler. I have even heard people say that Buckler is used to train people before they pick up a shield...
So where are all the shield treatises? Why is nobody looking into how they used to use a shield?
    Hopefully we can find out.
The manual I'm using is: I33 Fencing in the Style of the Walpurgis Manuscript 2nd edition Paperback - 21 May 2016
You can find it here: amzn.to/3whB9gK
Please do let me know what you think of this video and be sure to share it with any of your friends or acquaintances who also have an interest in using a shield effectively.
Big shout out to Axe and Board: / axeandboard
Their revolutionary work on pressure testing shield techniques is something you CANNOT miss out on. I can't state enough how much I've learned from these chaps.
‪@ChuckIsland‬ ‪@stevesprange1‬ ‪@lofty2tall‬ for letting me test my shield and sword stuff on you regularly!!
All of my HEMA training so far has been done via The Order of the Blade.
If you aren't familiar with the Order of the blade, please do check them out, they're a great group of HEMA fighters, re-enactors and all sorts of other crazy people who like throwing weapons at each other. Find out more at: orderoftheblade.co.uk
Although I am destined to defeat them, the Order has been a fantastic place to train what I want to train. We don't follow the manuals in class, they may influence some techniques, but we learn COMBAT. How to fight, in a style that develops our natural and previous skills, with whatever weapon system we choose (as long as it's safe to spar with). Every session is an hour of drills, followed by an hour of sparring. It's Ace. We even do regular Bi-monthly get together of all our clubs and have a full day of sparring, which we call a Muster. The Musters are insane and open to absolutely anyone. So If you want to give it a go, or if you're coming from a rival club to test your metal, then I'll be really excited to see you at the next one!

Interpretations of old texts and treatises without the original teachers is tricky (I know I had just said the most obvious thing ever).
    But…
I like your video because you mention what works for you in sparring against resisting opponents, and therefore I think it is useful to HEMA practitioners and enthusiasts

Thanks 😁 I'm for sure no expert, and yeah the texts can be pretty confusing. Even some of the stuff we see online only seems to work in best-case scenarios, so thought I'd add my two-cents. Probably due an updated version of this video tbh

Personally, I'm really glad that you made this video. Resources regarding the use of shields larger than bucklers combined with more complex rechniques and guards are extremely rare, ans I was thinking of using the third ward demonstrated here and in other people's videos as reference. However, I wonder if some of the awkwardness of the third ward could be alleviated by moving your sword hand further behind you on your left shoulder, such that the quillons are behind your neck as opposed to the blade being upon your shoulder (or at least the blade would be higher up upon the shoulder than what you've demonstrated)? I'd imagine that would make at least a diagonal cut from the upper left to lower right less awkward. Then again, that in itself might be awkward, what with thick clothing and armor and all that.
The video "Sword & Buckler Wards from the Walpurgis Fechtbuch (MS I.33) HEMA" by Michigan Medieval showed the third ward as I tried to explain.

Thanks mate!! Glad you found it useful. Looking back at this now with your question about the third in mind, I probably wouldn't go that far back myself, you kind of always want your sword in front of you, purely to save those milliseconds in getting to the block/parry or attack. And yes with modern sparring equipment there's all sorts of material or velcro bits you can get your quillons snagged on. But, I'm also a firm believer in "anything can work if you can make it work" so is worth trying out 👍👍
All of the custodia coming from the right-side/shield-side can be clumsier, simply because now I have to clear my own shield 🛡️. I ve even been sparring more with heater shields which are smaller profile and the same is true, first custodia especially is an easy one to get tangled in lol
Usually the best thing to do is move the shield out of the way. Although practice makes perfect on this one, as those things only get heavier and heavier throughout the bout 😅

Love this. I was searching for a video on someone experimenting with i33 with a viking shield and was shocked that it actually exists. lol
