    I really love more how Páll Oskar sounds here in the rehearsal than in the actual broadcasted performance. But still respect for this man on giving the key on how the modern performances in ESC should be made.

      @@alloallo1839 yep. Really.
      It was so unique for the time and literally ahead of its time. It was such a game changer and divided opinions. It may not have got anywhere near winning Eurovision, but it certainly got tongues wagging and became a marker in changing the perception of sex and sexuality in a performance at Eurovision.

    the original video was uploaded to a legendary cancelled channel called "senzate81". i hope that person is not dead because we need all the dress rehearsals, there were many treasures...
    i hope someone finds again at least Italy and France '97 dress rehearsals

      You're welcome! I have downloaded this one ages ago, but only recently realised that it doesn't seem to be available anywhere anymore. I definitely like the feel of this version better, but can understand why they changed the mixing for the actual performance as one can hear for example the microphone starting to echo at 2:27.

    Pall Oskar really planted the early seed of what would be fascinating to the eyes and ears of televoters by bringin in a classy but daring way, a performance with a very 90s Robert Miles dance beat that the most conservatives in Eurovision could not appreciate at all ... as witnessed by the juris that year ... Even if Germany's embarassing pre-round elimination with a techno song the previous year raised the first loud criticism against the lack of connection between the contest and the 90s music landscape, Israel took the hint of what Iceland attempted to do in 1997 and brought in 1998 the aditional element that still works in televoting: controversy and it worked forcing Eurovision to change its all approach radically and as fast as possible avoiding falling into oblivion. It was urgent to regain the audiences attention at home towards the compeition even if that meant sacrificing the quality and credibiliy of the music taking part (AKA the boring ballads as the fans like to label). For as long as it is fun and entertaining it's all that matters to bring in the people to watch and vote. 27 years later ... the whole charade surrounding televoting, has proven to still work even if it's for the least musical, least entertaning, and the most political ... Eurovision as always. It doesn't matter if the people at home are voting politically, for as long as the songs they want can win ... what no one will acept is the jury vote in favour of radio pop or music credibity in the eyes of the record labels (hello Sweden!).

    It's so weird how, even in the late 90s, they had an orchestra with a conductor, for a dance track 😅 I suppose they were the E.B.U rules at the time.

      Some parts used the orchestra. It was forbidden use completely prerecorded music.

    • @GustavoCL81
      @GustavoCL81 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it wasn’t forbidden. Croatia and Ireland, for example, didn’t use the orchestra.

      I interviewed Paul Oscar himself on this matter, and I can assure you it was his personal choice to have a string arrangement for his entry conducted by the arranger itself, Szymon Kuran. As pointed out by Gustavo here, by 1997 it was allowed to work with full rhythm tracks - so there was a choice to ignore the orchestra completely. You can read the full story here - all-conductors-of-eurovision.blogspot.com/1997/05/szymon-kuran.html

      Italy completely skipped using it, 9 years earlier, in 1988 and opted for a studio fadeout on a song that was too long.
