      Bullshit. Are you telling me you cannot find a Walkman for sale? Maybe you will pay a premium for a collectible or sought after model, but you could find one from any make.
      BUT WHY? Why the fuck would anyone want to piss around with cassettes and cassette decks these days. They were shit thirty years ago. Now obsolete and useless comes to mind. I see no niche even.
      Unless you are a collector, OK. But to actually use. Day to day as a system for music, either static or on the move, it is a non starter.
      In the day, even if you went all out with good chrome and decent metal tapes and a damn fine and expensive TEAC, Sony, Technics or Nakamichi, etc deck, they were still an inferior product and sound. They just seem to suffer from tape hiss and lack of headroom, even with the different Dolby systems, which created another problem in itself especially on the move or sharing stuff, as it would invariably be the wrong one, or was mislabelled or not labelled.
      I most certainly do NOT miss bloody rewinding etc, either. LOL.

      @Tong Zou what exactly is so spectacular about the circuitry in this particular model?

    • @NicolasChanCSY
      @NicolasChanCSY 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@HNedel These audiophile-grade audio devices often have cleaner and more transparent sound than our daily devices because their circuitry are designed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and thus less noise. Also, the circuitry of these products are tuned so that the outcoming sound from different brands may have a different sound signature.
      Also, the audio processing of their chip affects the quality of the sound. These devices are specialised to render audio and thus often provides a better soundstage and background sound. Therefore, users can enjoy "more" of and from their music.
      Regarding price, this player is on the beginner's side. Sony also has DAPs that are way more expensive due to their top-class hardware and software. Those have retail prices of more than USD1000, or even more than USD3000 (WM1Z). So this one is really not that expensive for those audiophiles or enthusiast.
      Think it like this way, while you may say that Michelin star restaurants are non-sense for their prices and etc., many people love to go to these restaurants because of many reasons, like to have best food, to showoff of social status, to try something new, etc. This player may not be one of those "Michelin stars", but closer than our smartphones or laptops.

    Just gave it a try. I compared my Wh-h910n with LDAC Bluetooth and wired through the output socket, the A100 is really enjoyable. Next I plugged in my closed-back Focal Listen Pro (more geared towards studio mixing I’m told, but appart form my reddish and black color, I bet the drivers are exactly the same). The Sony sounded pretty much the same with or without the wire (which tends to prove LDAC is really nice in this DAP price range - and that the built-in headphone DAC isn’t bad at all, just as the internal amplifier isn’t too distorted). The Bass is very present (no boost, no eq, no dsp tricks), details (transients, attacks) are Ok. On the Listen Pro, the bass is thinner, but the details are much clearer, as is the stereo imaging. Initially I enjoyed the Sony a lot more, but I realized it might get fatiguing over long periods. The Focal « listen » brand name is correctly describing what it is for. I think I’m going to use the Sony when I multitask around and want a good vibe, but plug-in the Focal when I want to rest and do just that : listen. The Wh-h1000Xm3 and 4 have bigger drivers I’m told, but the 910n has already got Bass-a-plenty, and as an iOS device user, have no need to pay for APT-X codecs : SBC, AAC and LDAC is all I need.

    I guess it's ok for what it is. I agree with a lot of points you made about it too.
    Samsung did something like this several years ago too. I think it was called Samsung Play. It was basically whatever phone was current at the time, maybe a Galaxy S2 or S3, but without the phone part. It's main function was an MP3 player that ran on Android V.Something, and had access to the Google Play Store to install and run apps. I got one for my son when he was maybe 8-10 years old, and he liked it. We used it to keep in touch with one of the messaging apps because he lived with his mother about 30 miles away. We were talking about it just a couple days ago, and one of the things he remembered about it was that it had "phone" language in the settings, like they used the exact software that would have been on one of their phones, but the just left the phone app and radio out. Like at the end of the main setting page, instead of saying "about device" or "about player", it actually said "about phone". Pressing "about phone" brought up the info page, and a couple lines down it actually had a line for the phone number, which was either empty or was dashed out, but there was still a line that said "phone number".
    I think this might appeal to a very small segment, probably young children that don't need a phone yet but still know more about them than we do lol. I think younger kids might see the cassette animation through the window and have that whole thing about "my Dad's Walkman has a window to see those things spinning". For a couple weeks, then it lands somewhere and gets completely forgotten about until five years after Jr moved out and dad converts that bedroom into his man cave or toy room or whatever you want to call it. Then it turns up in the closet, on the top shelf, way in the back, stuffed into one of the corners.

    I was excited about this Walkman, having owned a few earlier Sony models plus a Discman and then a couple of MD players from Sony. However Im starting to see that this is just too expensive for what it offers and it looks like all the sound processing settings will get locked out if you are using bluetooth headphones. Im still loving the idea of the cassette tape screensaver but and its a big BUT...... There's an app for iPhone owners that I have tried that does exactly that and even lets you spool forward and backward through your tracks! It will only play music downloaded to your device but it is very nice and retro. Its called "Delitape - Deluxe Cassette Player" for those still on the fence about Sony's offering.

    It's quite a cool piece of technology and I'm really happy Sony put's effort into creating Hi-Res Audio devices. Although pricey it's the one of the few options to go for if you want Hi-Res Audio with the format support in a compact form factor with 3,5mm audio and USB-C. The SoC used is coming from Freescale/NXP type i.MX 8M Mini Quad, or MIMX8MM6DVTLZAA CPU which runs at 1.8GHZ and it is unclear whether or not it will get an update to Android 10. That being said, it's hopefull that OPUS, Ogg Vorbis and other formats are hardware accelerated as well as they can eat quite a lot of battery when software decoded.

    I found super*reviews technique of screen pinning the music app to be a life saver on this device. It bypasses the need to log into the device but only gives access to the music player. You can then log into the device if needed by choice. I actually think its a good device just flawed with an OS system it didn't really need.

    On another note, can you do a review on digital media/Mp3 players worthwhile and available on the market right now? I was surprised to see that Sony still had something in that category on offer, but they have an anniversary, so that's at least part of the reason for that.

Perhaps a cute Walkman screen on the 'phone would be almost as attractive.

    • @Fusiongearz
      @Fusiongearz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      See your s10+ may be able to take good pictures and have a good screen and what not, but that doesn't mean it will sound the same as this Walkman. Your phone has a low quality dac and amp that won't sound as good as a device that actually took the time to put good components in there. There is a reason DAPs like this exist and that's because they will sound considerably better and be louder than any smartphone. Mind you not everyone cares about sound quality and be fine with the cheap earbuds that were included with the phone or some $10 skullcandies. However, for those that do enjoy good quality sound a device like this is actually worthwhile. Especially since it runs android which means you can get streaming apps to run on it and with services like Tidal you can get master quality audio streams. The only smartphone manufacture that is actually putting in decent dac and amp is LG and those phones aren't that popular. So chances are you like most people are fine with mediocre sound and that's fine, to each their own.

    I own the NW-A105, which is the same player without the Anniversary branding. If you switch off the wifi and Bluetooth the battery is not so bad, but it is still poor compared to smartphones and older Personal Media Players such as iPods and older solid state memory Sony Walkman's.
    The memory capacity is very limited because the 16gb fills up quickly with a handful of apps and software updates. I think the best of these players was the NW-A107 which has 64gb onboard storage which gives one ample space for apps and software updates. The NW-A100 and NW-A105 offer pathetic storage. I have only three apps installed: Netflix, Apple Music, and VLC player and that is it. All my media is on a memory card and I still get "low storage space" messages. I think anyone considering buying this player, get the NW-A107 because it is the best of the bunch.
    The Walkman case that comes with the NW-A100 is of a really poor quality. I mean, it is a soft material and it is not at all durable at all. It won't withstand much wear and tear. I have seen one in real life and the person who has it has treated it with care, yet still the top/bottom edges on the edge folds have still frayed. The material stretches too and the door starts to droop. My advice would be to get a different case for day to day use and retain the original for those occasions when feelings of nostalgia are reaching fever pitch.
    With wi fi and Bluetooth on, the device drains pretty fast. I have found it drains around 30% per hour when in use. If you leave wi fi and Bluetooth on, even in idle mode the battery drains fast - even with no apps open, and brightness turned right down. Most people would probably like to use music streaming apps and wireless headsets so I think making such a small A droid device was misguided because a tiny battery cannot keep it running for long, especially when both Bluetooth and wi fi are on.
    Other than that, the player is fun to use. The sound is great and personally I like the small size. It is nice and compact. That is why it is a shame that the battery life is poor. Although some people have complained it should not have been an Android device, I disagree because you can use music streaming apps which expands your music library.
    The Walkman all is pretty cool and allows you to switch on ClearAudio which just needs up the sound in a good way.
    The Walkman cassette animation looks pretty cool, and the screen is lovely to look at.
    Although the Walkman is an app on this device, people need to remember that for the last several years Sony Walkman's have evolved to become personal media players which means they give users additional features such as video and the internet because typically people consume media in many different ways. While it is very unlikely anyone will watch videos on such a small screen, things like TH-cam work well, and people with a TH-cam Premium subscription probably find that a worthwhile thing.
    One tip I have for people to save battery life on this player when using music streaming apps is to download music you intend to listen to. Also, refrain from using wireless headsets when the unit is unplugged because that will reduce the battery. Although very few people would use Netflix on this, if anyone does, it is better to download stuff to the device because then you are not using the wi fi to stream. If you plug this in, you can use the wi fi and Bluetooth because the battery won't drain while it is being charged. The unit is not ideal but it is unique and I do like it. Next time around, I hope Sony find a way to make the battery last longer.

But in a way, they'd probably shift more units with even a half-decent tape machine than this thing. Tape is making a bit of a comeback and it would have far more novelty value. Still not for 400 bloody quid though! Unless it was built like the old Pro Walkmans (even less likely, of course!)

    • @root42
      @root42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think a 40th anniversary walkman could have been economically viable. There is enough people out there that grew up with the walkman and would buy a premium for the experience. Make it 200 USD or so, which should be enough to make a decent mechanism, pack in two new tapes, and I'll bet all the hipsters and nostalgic people would be all over it. The electronics are nowadays so small and cheap, that the Walkman could have recording functionality, line in and out, as well as all electronic buttons and controls. And Sony is big enough that they could have made a few 100,000 of those.

    Sony killed the legacy of Walkman a while ago. They even renamed their Walkman app into “Music” for their smartphones a couple of years ago.

    • @VariantAEC
      @VariantAEC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Did you ever figure that they changed the app name to preserve the Walkman legacy?
      They don't make this kind of hardware anymore why is that considered a problem now?
      Who uses cassettes anymore. Most people I know who really want to preserve their old content digitized their own cassettes long ago. The problem is cassettes aren't really a great format. CD is far better in a lot of ways the media itself is smaller, waterproof stores more higher quality audio content. The player hardware itself is larger, but typically weighs less, it works faster and as a bonus it's still user friendly, light on battery consumption and new devices don't skip or damage discs when tossed around a little.
      Of course digital media is where this player sits and most devices these days sound excellent even non-Walkman enabled devices far outside of Sony's dominion.
      That wasn't always true and even when I first purchased my Samsung Galaxy S8 I noted that it had terrible audio quality... That changed and for the better as it should've seeing as how the equipment on board is superior to my previous phones innards in nearly every imaginable way.
      The phone I upgraded from was a Sony Xperia Z3 and that was an awesome phone but it had heating issues little OS support and Sony stopped selling their phones through carriers which is why I picked up the Samsung Galaxy S8 instead of an Xperia Z5 Premium.
      The Galaxy S8 is a powerful device and thanks to continued support the device received proper sound fixes that brought it up to par with previous digital Walkman equipment I own.
      Everything sounds good these days this particular Walkman and most digital Walkman's cater to a niche market. I honestly can't say anything about the quality of these newer devices because I've not picked up a premium Walkman since the X1060 back in 2009. Back then that device also cost $400 USD and it was one of the first to include DNC built into the device itself and it came with the headsets which is why I picked it up. It was glorious and truth be told I wish Samsung had its own integrated DNC feature on smartphones or that other manufacturers jumped on that train Sony's Xperia line of phone's combined all of Sony's best into a phone and the Z3 still has DNC over any new devices including some of Sony's own newer devices and was an incredibly forward looking portable... but I digress.
      This device is a luxury and like all luxuries it isn't necessary. It has a place for those who do buy it but personally I agree with most people here. Sell a phone case or animated wallpaper skins they'd probably make more money and appeal to a wider range of Walkman fans.

The Walkman had been reduced to an Android application years ago, after the endless watering down of the brand through naming myriad feature phones after it. The app ended up with a very original name, “Music”. An overpriced, outdated, half-skinned smartphone-minus-the-phone with a horrendously poor battery life isn't the easiest product to pitch, either to the audiophile niche or to the wider market, and it certainly isn't what the Walkman enthusiasts deserve.

      I don't see an issue with having just 16GB of internal memory since the player also has a MicroSD slot. In fact, for simplicity I'd rather the player have a small amount of internal memory for just the player's use (internal data management) with all of the audio files and other user data (such as playlists) stored on the SD card. My experience with my Walkman players (I have two that use memory cards) is that the internal memory and the SD memory card they are treated as separate storage locations (the player does integrate them when you are using the player). Due to this, you can't have a playlist that contains files in both locations. Due to this, I think it would easier to just use a memory card to store your music.

Apple (due to their demented fanbase) and providers of luxury goods (where the prime reason to pay a lot is to pay a lot to feel good, which is as irrational as people get) get away with this, but Sony isn't. That is as long as they don't want to position themselves in that niche (which would loose them most of their existing customers).

They looked great and seemed super well made. But i didn't want to have to re-rip all my library and rely on God knows how good or terrible software. So i got Creative and Sansa players from that era on, and had Rio and Thomson ones before.

    So Sony have created a slightly modified "Sony Music Centre" app, and included tape animations >>inspired

    Gah. No. This is just...Bad. 400 notes? I mean, you said it all. Even if it was 200, it would still be lame. The only cool thing is the tape animation (where they couldn't even be bothered to show the tape spool changing for track position). All the things you could get for 400 quid. You can nearly get an iPhone 8 for that.
    Anyway, an entertaining and thorough review as always, thanks.

      1. Ipod touch seems much better.
      2. What's the point? You could just buy a cheap smartphone and them install the sony music app there. If not that. There are many more better music apps.

    First of all, dear Techmoan, thanks for sharing this video. Very well presented (as usual) and informative. But essentialy, what I felt after watching - what a nice, lovely, well-made and utterly expensive vinyl case! Have no other words to describe how generic and ordinary feels and looks this device (without the case). And I couldn“t agree more with many other users talking about "missed opportunity", "garbage" and "original cassette player". What a heck is with Sony guys anyway? Cassettes are currently facing a great comeback, there are more and more brand new albums (and these are not limited to hipster and indie sounds anymore, but also mainstream and other genres are rising and having a new and different life on good old cheap medium, which original walkman made so popular in golden days!).... People want cassettes again, cassete is sturdy and relible, and then, obviously, they want to buy a gear to listen to tapes.... what happens is that (not that) cheap, low quality chinese devices are being sold like hell these days, sounding like crap, and the original inventor and producer of genuine "pocket cassette player" (also one of the world“s largest music labels!) haven“t even bothered to notice a trend. In that context, this "anniversary" so called "walkman" fits like a fist in the eye of any true walkman and sony admirers.... what a pity! Many people asked me for advice what cassette walkman to buy nowdays, and most of them are shocked that only proper solution to enjoy (old and new) tape albums and compilations is to buy a used, refurb or "old new stock" device (luckily, some of your videos are explaining very well what to buy or not, so I advise them to use it as refference - once more: thanks, Techmoan!).... knowing that other serious large companies are following the trend (like Tascam, with a very decent 202ᴍᴋVII deck), it“s a great shame that Sony totally ignored a great chance to show who is the bass, once again. :( cheers!

    Sony's really asking people to pay hundreds of dollars for an mp3 player in 2019, huh?

      Had it been a really good one I would have been interested. But they probably thought not that many would be interested so they didn't even bother trying.

      aha and apple can keep their prices up, but Sony really is giving you some hd audio device, which is compared to others pretty good
      if you want some real good devices you probably have to spend more than 500 bucks
      this price is ok
