  • Director Matthew Warchus, lead actor Andy Karl, and librettist Danny Rubin(pictured above, left to right), discuss Groundhog Day, their new Broadway musical adapted from the classic 1993 film of the same name that Rubin conceived of solo (wanting to write a screenplay about immortality), and eventually co-wrote with the film’s director, the late Harold Ramis. Karl, who has taken on the challenge of reinventing the role of “Phil, the weatherman,” so closely identified with actor Bill Murray, details the challenges, both mental and physical, entailed in making the role totally his own.

    I'm really weirded out by the idea of a non character actor playing Phil. I mean I'm sure the guy is great, but to me, the way Bill looked was pretty important to the role. Not ugly by any stretch, but not a male model either. It's weird is all.

      go see the show; he's amazing. Phil isn't Bill Murray.
