No way that guy thinks a 90 year old slot machine comes with a lifetime warranty from a pawn shop. He 100% took advantage of a business that needs to keep everyone happy.
Agree he just played around with it too much and it broke, thats the issue these guys too often get away with this behavior. If he bought it on ebay "Sold as is" and there you cant even test it, nobody would argue that the seller is responsible to fix it... He tested it in the Store and it worked, that should have been the conclusion. You bought it and its your issue now.

It hadn’t been a lifetime, he’d just bought it. Should last at least a week, right? He paid a lot of money for a “restored” slot machine. It should work.
Here's my thing, who buys an antique slot machine to sit there and play with it , you buy stuff like that mainly for a display/conversation piece , yeah you want it working , to show people but I'm not gonna be sitting there with $50 worth of quarters playing it .

What kills me is he calls the machine refurbished but then we hear the story of the machine and it was restored more than 30 years ago. It has been used for god knows how long without ANY known maintenance done on it. That would seriously fucking bother me to only learn that info AFTER buying a machine I was led to believe was recently restored.

The deciding factor is that the slot machine worked fine for a few tries when he brought it back and then went to glitching. So it’s clear the customer didn’t break it when he took but rather it’s off and on glitching. To post this customers face on a scamming channel is sick. Leave this guy alone

I love mechanical machines. His quick diagnosis and simple solution shows his love for his business and care for all items in it, and that was dope!
As with all sales, if it says "As Is" and he literally got to try it, then it's HIS problem. You are too nice...If he is threatening to sue you he will lose in court for buying something sold "As is". My guess is that he may even know what's wrong with it now and just wants to get you to pay for it. What a JERK! And threatening to sue you and yelling at you is NO way to begin a negotiation.
When you own a business, its best to deal with it then to ignore. Shows trust. $2,200 purchase, he's a client you want to keep

That machine is a reproduction that was made in Carpentersville IL in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The person that made them is now deceased, but he owned many of the factory dies when he reproduced them. He did not use case-hardened steel on some of the parts like Mills did in the ‘40s and his machine’s didn’t quite hold up as well as the original ones did.

@@mark2474 Interesting - did not know that. I personally have a "Mills Black Beauty" myself (yes - I know it's a common unit). It takes dimes and it seems to be a good unit. Got mine for $900 many years ago (about 26 years ago I think ). It's not restored but it looks good.

People don’t understand “as is” or “final sale”. I worked for a retail store that was closing and while in liquidation everything was a final sale. So I told the customers the purchase was a “final sale” and they’d be like “ok”. Then I’d say “so that means if you take it home, plug it in and it doesn’t work, it’s still yours”. People were like “oh 😮”. So funny.

No it definitely the lever with the spring not moving to lock position fast enough. Likely lubrication that turn sticky over time. You can see it when he has the back open and works the mechanism.
Yeah. He opened it up for sure, broke it, then called around for cost to fix it. Then had the idea to haggle the antique shop to pay half of the cost. Well his idea worked !!!

It is mechanical and there was a maintenance issue that caused the failure. Under law this could be considered "Fraud in the inducement. A criminal offense in almost every state.

Yes I agree with you - sell it as is. He was taking a risk buying a 1930 slot machine. The thing is, what happens if he gets it fixed and it breaks again in a week. That slot machine is a mechanical nightmare and lucky that it even worked to begin with.

EXCEPT he stated it was FULLY RESTORED. This precludes most arguments. Te weak spring tells me it was not. The lack of lubrication (which requires cleaning) proves it was not. Then he made the statement that the owner restored it in the 90's. That is Fraud in the inducement and a criminal act in almost every state.
you do make a very valid statement. It's old as all can be, who knows how it was secured and transported on the 2 hour trip, and who knows how it was used.

When dealing with second hand goods, unless specified, it’s always sold as seen. If it worked perfectly in the shop then that’s the end of the story. If this is a 90 year old item, what do you expect?

@@FLOWERSANDSLOTS Why does it matter when it stopped working? Seller already admitted age is the likely cause, so it would have just as likely failed in-store. Knowing this, it is completely unethical to sell it as if it worked (obviously the case for buyer to hand him money)

The rabbit hole got me, again.
From my 20 years of sales and services in computer repairs, not to put that guy in a category, but he reminds of the type of people that would buy a computer completely repaired (and I know the computer is 100% good to go because I take pride of my work) and come back a couple days later saying its broken. I would point out to them this wouldnt happen unless it was dropped or knocked over. Then trying not to admit it, they would try to go half on the cost to fix it again or pay for the part needing replaced. Something tells me they were rough with it or something got loose in transit since it is an old machine.
What I would have done is ask this guy if he wants to return the slot machine and get a partial refund or keep it because it's an antique and sold as is. Especially if he was told that during the transaction. Customer isnt always right.

You handled this well. The internal mechanisms are well built, but at age 90, it really shouldn't be a Man Cave toy for friends and family to pull the handle like it was built yesterday. He should take care of the museum piece he bought. Pull the handle once in a while. It's harder and harder to find folks that can fix them.
Exactly - this guy went home and ran quarters through it until it it malfunctioned just so he can make an issue of it.
They aren't hard to fix for someone with a little logic, they have very straight forward easy to work out mechanisms. They were designed to go in corner stores and had to be easy repairable for the store owner.

This situation reminded me of when I was in car sales. I had a customer who was so nice, deal went smooth, everyone’s happy; next day check engine light on a year old used car with 5k miles on it. We took care of it at no cost, but it really sours a nice interaction

I sell used items much the same way that you do and I am impressed with the way you handled this situation. Making the customer feel like he or she was treated fairly is always the best thing to do even if it costs you a little. An unhappy customer can really hurt your business, but most importantly it was the right thing to do and that is what life is all about. I’m sure you got the issue resolved easily and turned a potentially negative exchange into a positive one. Bravo!

If causing a customer inconvenience of extra 8 hours of driving (2h each way x2 round trips) to fix what was clearly advertised as working (otherwise buyer wouldn't have paid), then forcing them to pay half of this hidden fault is "fair" to you, I pray I never run into any of your items for sale
@@vibecity5381 It worked perfectly in the store before he bought it. Who's to say the buyer didn't abuse it at home. The way he was jerking on the handle and manhandled it with force tells you a lot of how this buyer treated it.
He sold it working and also specified "as is".
I also hope I never sell to you as you seem to be the type to buy a new suit and return it after the wedding.
@@rzbkfan190 Seller also awkwardly tried to blame customer, however he already admitted "these things are old" (revealing he knew it was faulty). Just because you two think like twins doesn't make it "fair" to hide the defect (just explains why you wrongly find it "fair")
