no explosions, no fancy stages, no dancing lights or naked girls, just a man with his guitar captivating you with his music. If your ever around a fire with a bunch of tailgates backed up to it and Don comes on the radio it always seems like the chitter chatter dies down and people go to a different time of their lives. now that's talent
I have seen Don Williams live 5 times, this is the song he opened the show with every time. Love Him, thank GOD he made it to the COuntry Hall Of Fame. He deserves it !
Growing up in the 80s and 90s my grandmother filled our home with the music of Don Williams, Merle Haggard, The Statler Brothers, Marty Robins, etc… I miss those days
This is perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung. I was 12 years old when I first heard it and I remember thinking people will love this song 50 years from now. Well its been over 30 years now for me and I now I'm thinking long past 50.
+Beverly Parham I agree with you, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung. It makes us happy for the way a lot of us grew up, I could have grown up better, but all any of us deserve is a fighting chance. I got a fighting chance.
This is a great song. Not only is the person a southernor but an intellectual. How many southern men appreciate Thomas Wolfe and Tenessee Williams. A truely great song with wonderful lyrics.
Humanity could make music for a thousand more years....it would not approach this on any level - musically, emotionally, inspirationally....masterpiece
Whenever I'm out, I play this song as a tribute to my dear old dad, RIP. I grew up listening to Don Williams (among others,) and I'm glad to still have the real music in me today.
He was and always will be the King of true country music. He has been my favorite artist since he recorded "I'm Just a Country Boy". There will never be another like him, or a voice like his. I am going to miss him for many years to come.
If you go to one of his concerts today, close your eyes and you can be taken back to 1978. The man comes on stage, sits on that same tan chair, strums and sings. His voice is clear and sharp as it was in '78. He captivates his crowd and you would think they passed out lyrics to everyone. as they all sing along. we saw Don a few months back, and will go again the next time in town.
Omg!!! Every time I listens to Don William, it always makes me think home. & this nostalgic feelings and loneliness took over. a lot of childhood memories; when you were all young, with your sisters & brothers eating together while parent took care of things.. Thank you for sharing this song..
Love Don Williams, so down to earth, a great artist, and will be missed by all who enjoyed his music. Been a Williams fan since the 70's. Rip, gone but your music will live on, amen.
Just saw Don tonight in concert, and he was AMAZING... sounds just as good tonight as he did 30 years ago... and his songs are true to the heart.... LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!
My dad wore out an 8 track player on this album, I wore out a cassette player on this album! Now my son is doing his best to wear out a CD player on it. No matter how many years go by Don's music touches people somewhere deep.
I remember as a kid lying in bed back in the 70's listening to a little AM transistor radio. "WMAQ is gonna make you rich!" Don's voice never failed to relax me.
I love to listen to this guy. I went to see him in concert a few months ago. I'm still sad that it is his last tour. Thank goodness for youtube and iTunes!
My father loved this song and it always reminds me of him when I heard it. I guess it is a Southern thing. I spent years running away from my roots, but a few notes of this and I can see light'n bugs, screen porches and my dad.
Got to see Don in Newark, Ohio in concert this past summer, I tell you what, sweet memories growing up hearing his voice, coming home from school and hearing Don on the record player, my parents loved him, and I learned too as well. The concert night I felt my parents spirits sitting with me...It was BEAUTIFUL
Possibly the most literate song in the history of country music. Not a typical love song/drinkin' song/train song, etc. (and I have nothing against those by the way) but this is a song about identity, about southern culture, with literary references and poetic language that is not normally heard in the typical country...an extraordinary piece of work, and well and sincerely performed by Don Williams, Remarkable song for its time and it has stood the test of time beautifully.
Someday, hopefully!!! Have listened to him for about 40 years ago - his songs are some of the most gentle and moving songs ever written or performed!!! He always makes me smile inside and out!!!
Don Williams has the easiest voice to listen to. I could listen to him all day. He Sung one of my grandpas favorite songs. And he sings a few of mine. R.I.P Grandpa.
I'm 14, and I guarantee there's not many other 14yr olds today that have Don Williams as their favorite country singer. Love his new album, hopes he keeps em comin
Don Williams was my dad's favorite country singer. I remember hearing his music on car trips to Oklahoma and Texas. Great memories. Thank you Don Williams for your wonderful gift, and your ability to touch the human heart.
I had the privilege of seeing Don perform in Thunder Bay Canada last nite (17/06/2011) He sounded and looked better than ever. Still tugs at the heartstrings and draws a tear & smile. I hope I have the opportunity to see him again!
Something about the voice spoke to a serene sanity in a world in short supply of that. So many country songs make you feel a part of a family. This song as a youngster was the equivalent of advice from John Walton to me. A Simple, Proud, Respect - filled declaration of the common man.
Qite simply the best ever country singer no other country singer can ever match this great man so sad that he is not touring any longer seen him 3 times in Wales uk out of this world I was a 13 year old when I got hooked on his voice and songs now nearly 50 still listen to his music when ever Im driving my truck around on the road at night long live Don Williams and god bless him for giving us such wonderfull music long live this kind of true country music Patricia
Don Williams is the man!! I got to see him last year with a few "guest artists" who turned out to be Josh Turner and Keith Urban. It was awesome!! I have been to several concerts, but that was by far the best one!! And I am grateful that I got to share the experience with my mom. It was awesome!!
I just saw Don williams in concert last week in Asheville, NC. Let me tell you....This man hasn't lost a thing. He put on an amazing show. Thank you, Don for keeping it country.
I'm 40 and I cry just about everytime I hear this song. It reminds me of my father who was born in the Taxas Panhandle in 1932. He lived on a farm through the dust bowl and the great depression. A different breed. And I mean it
Classic! I grew up hearing Don Williams in my childhood home and bought his stuff when I got on my own. When I read Louis L'Amour, this is the voice I hear in my head. Smooth, Southern, Sexy. :)
Melted butter....one of the most liquid and flowing voices on the planet....He can actually sing a melodic tune...not many of those around these days.....
when I was was a kid the sounds of Don Williams put me to sleep. Listened to this song every night on my radio. Great rumbling voice. Great story teller. New country needs more guys like Don
He is my favorite artist. I grew up listening to his songs every night. I thank God for my mother for exposing to Don Williams' song to put me to sleep, every night. He is the greatest.
This my favorite Don Williams song. He's got the smoothest voice since Jim Reeves.Love them both.Should have been a hall of famer along time ago glad to see he finally made it!!
I talked to Don Williams back in the late 80s. I worked for AT&T and I took a call one night from a Mr. Don Williams. I was 18 years old and I was all country when country was "uncool." Most teenagers wouldn't have recognized the name or the voice, but I about passed out. I asked him "is this 'THE' Don Williams" and he said "why yes it is sugar, and how would you know about me" and I told him I'd been listening to him all my life. we went on for a few, best night ever on my job! Love that man!!!
I saw Don a few years ago and it was better by far than any other concert I've ever seen. His music is pure, honest, and simple. He is one of a kind and I am thankful to have had his music in my life while I was growning up!
I remember my first-ever trip to Tennessee, on the same trip that marked my first trip to West Virginia... No other song makes me as homesick as this one. Not only for Brady, Texas my home, but to a different time.
Does the same for me with Lampasas. Lonely feeling when I go there.
Same feeling over here. Going back in time where we can be at home. Listening to soft music.
A bygone country, a bygone people.... Weep, weep for OUR people, and OUR country.
Humanity could make music for a thousand more years....it would not approach this on any level - musically, emotionally, inspirationally....masterpiece

you are the best country singer in history
If you grew up in the South & you're at least 50 years young, then, this is about the best tune ever written, period.
I remember my first-ever trip to Tennessee, on the same trip that marked my first trip to West Virginia... I prepared a cassette tape for the rental car that I could play as I crossed the border of each, for the first time.

I hope his family can gain some small appreciation for how a few of Don's songs affected somebody who is about as far (geographically, among those in the continental USA anyway) as can be from Nashville. I remember clearly that my first entry into Tennessee came via the Great Smokey Mountains from SC, and I had the song queued-up and ready as the state line approached.
Thank you, Don Williams, for representing country music so very well during your lifetime.
I wish I could hear "Good Ol' Boys Like Me" somewhere, in direct tribute.

I am a huge fan of Don Williams- I saw him in Las Vegas 1992, and a few years later here in Australia, in concert. Spellbounding stuff. I like nearly all
his songs, but I think ( and I believe Don agrees), that this is his very best
song / performance. Thanks for posting.

Always have loved Don's voice! Smooth!!
This just might be the greatest country song ever written. It certainly has to be at
least in the Top 10. What a classic !!! And Don's delivery is SO great. The lyrics are
a LOt deeper than most music these days. This was written by Bob McDill, right?
Anyone familiar with his tunes ?
It's funny (and sad) that I'd forgotten how much I like this kind of music.
Hi Mary hope you’re okay?
