Their is a TNG episode where the Enterprise ends up having to help a planet that is threatened by a super massive load of radioactive wastes that was carelessly dumped in space by somebody somewhere and they never figured out where it came from.
I guess the Voyager writers decided to give an answer to that mistery.

I always figured that since Starfleet uses universal translators that if its something the translator cannot translate to the tongue of the one hearing it (lets say the Malon home world name sounds to a human like breaking glass or a high pitched shriek) then it defaults to "X Prime". We have canon evidence this is true from that episode where Quark, Rom, and Nog got sent back in time and became the Roswell aliens because with their translators offline human speech sounded like gibberish so it obvious nobody actually bothers to learn other languages they just take whatever the translator gives them at face value.

So to prevent the confusion of having several thousand Earth's, you either name a planet after its star or main species.

I like how you addressed the problem of species having almost the same name as their home world. It works in small amounts like how in halo the Sangheili come from Sangheilios while all the other races have differing names (Unggoy of Balaho, Jiralhanae of Doisac). A similar problem I have is that all the other races use ancient human words in the naming of things, such as the frequent use of Greek letters (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta) when they should have little to no linguistic similarities in their cultures.

Tholians for sure. Trek has always used them from the beginning as the mysterious mulligan bad guy- but never put the time into developing them. They put more focus into the Gornz than the Tholians, for petey's sake. And from all the boat-loads of all Treks I've seen, they have pretty well advanced technology for a bunch of space-ticks, spiders, and mites.
BUTTTTT- THE HUTTTS... come back to them soon. Star Wars definately isn't an IP high on my favorites (getting squarely beat by Space:1999 and Ice Pirates lol haha) But I'm sure that I heard from a friend of a friend once, that the Hutts actually are supposed to be some kind of ancient race in SW, and that supposedly there's even a Hutt Jedi somewhere in the expanded SW universe. Can't EVEN imagine how that would work for all the Force acrobatics....

The Federation might have a Prime Directive. But I'm sure many aliens don't have any qualms about messing with primitive societies. The Malon were probably at the equivalent of their Victorian Era when warp tech was given to them in exchange for a bunch of food.

Not exactly, using the name of the planet to refer to the species is for ease of use, just as we are not known as humans but terrans as we come from the planet Terra, however just as cardassians come from cardassia, they have a word sinonim to the word human. Just as Vulcans come from Vulcan and Andorians from Andoria.

Where do they ship the waste even? Why not find a neighbouring sun and dump all the garbage in there? You might argue that it causes dangerous chemicals or radiation to be released or something. But surely that radiation wouldn't be able to travel to a different solar system!

If we dumped radiation into the star, we'd be screwed in five years when the planet is hit with theta ray blasts.
That's _why_ they have to go out so far and into the middle of nowhere.

To be fair, we don’t call humans earthlings, but we call people from America Americans. That’s why I like how StarCraft made humans Terrans, presumably from Tera. It’s consistent… except I don’t think the Protos are named after their planet so I guess the then broke that.
