Frank's always been interviewed by these extremely common-sensed journalists, and he always managed to shed a spotlight in the superficiality of their arguments without being rude. This guy sounds like he has lived through the 2020's and is telling the world what he has seen in his trip to the future. Frank's amazing

Except he was wrong about McCarthy and didn't realize the Religious Right is not actually religious. The churches were captured by LBJ by turning them into government-controlled 501c3 Charities. They then had to teach Zionism over Christianity. A couple generations have been brainwashed to love their Slave Masters.

His ability to understand and articulate the logical conclusion of the 80s GOP is truly astounding. Many others were talking around the issue at the time, seeing the signs and understanding it to a lesser degree. Zappa cut right to the chase and distilled it as if he had a Time Machine. Source?
I'm thinking you might have had in mind these words from James Madison's "Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments":
"If Religion be not within the cognizance of Civil Government how can its legal establishment be necessary to Civil Government? What influence in fact have ecclesiastical establishments had on Civil Society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the Civil authority; in many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny: in no instance have they been seen the guardians of the liberties of the people."
Madison also wrote (same source), "During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."
Here is an Adams quotation, from his letter to Jedidiah Morse, 5 January 1816:
"To talk or think of liberty, or Privileges, under a military government, is as idle & absurd as under an Ecclesiastical Government."

@@charonbadmann8904 - The situation has ALWAYS been around; when the original British colonies had to deal with the fact that most preachers were the Anglican(Church of England) Church, and they wanted a tax levy to help pay them. The Pilgrims were a group of Religious troublemakers who had been thrown out of England. And further back into history; the Catholics ran Europe and started the Crusades - which are still remembered by Muslims today, and on and on. The GOP, as Zappa pointed out, started this modern Crusade - which is causing trouble TODAY - as a reaction to the exciting freedom of behavior begun in the 1950s and 60s, and that freedom and happiness was seen as as a calamity for American churches. So the Preachers - who had recently begun to televise their preaching - began telling their listeners what to do - and found that they could influence elections. The Republicans, who thought of the way young people acted as "just disgraceful" and hated short skirts and guys with long hair, kinda always hung out with those people anyway - the town councils and chambers of commerce were places that politicians hung out; just like churches.☹

2023-06-17: I liked the Mothers of Invention 😮before this and still do
and think Zappa was a genius.
But I was also a county chairperson in Dubuque County, Iowa,
    for Robertson in 1988.
I miss both Zappa and Robertson.
We need more outside the box thinking these days.
Robertson won the caucus in our county (but not in the state)
and was proud of carrying this very Catholic Dubuque County
with a lot of Catholic support.
I don’t claim to speak for all, or even most Robertson’s supporters,
and my perspective has evolved over the years,
and the following uses some 20-20 hindsight,
But here is how I see it right now in 2023:
I think a big part of what we Robertson supporters were doing
was trying to prevent the situation we have right now in June 2023.
We probably didn’t envision all the insanity we have today,
but we knew there was a real risk in national Godlessness,
I think many people today would rather have more of that traditional morality back
than have women having to compete against men in women’s sports,
gender insanity with young children suffering genital mutilation
    with government subsidized disorientation,
people’s votes being bought with their grandchildren’s money,
an open border, an LGBTQ+¿ flag being displayed
more prominently (between 2 US flags) than the US flag at the White House,
and our nation flooded with fentanyl and human (child sex) trafficking
and unidentifiable people from all over the world with unknown agendas
spread throughout the country (including “got-alway” immigrants
from countries antagonistic to our own.
The situation is now 180º from what Zappa had described in this interview,
and it is conservatism that has been outspent (by billionaires)
and more censored out of, and excluded from, serious debate.
Actually serious debate has been endangered.
And now the big and dirty money is overwhelmingly supporting the left,
Education, entertainment, popular eleemosynary activities, government agencies,
media and social media all nearly always aligned in support of the left.
    “Who Are the Brain Police?”
We Americans have despised our birthright (freedom, democracy, citizenship, etc.)
and sold it for a pot of putrid porridge.
Whether we can be like the Prodigal Son
and find our way home remains to be seen.
Lord help us turn this around,. Pl3ase !? 🙏🏼

At 1:44, Zappa says "... there's a difference between responsibility and adherense to dogma... when the dogma becomes legislation, that's when you have the danger..." I had to look up dogma, in order to get a definition, I got this: "a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true." OK, note the use of the word "principles." To address Mr. Zappa's statements I have to start out saying: OK let's take an example to see if what he says is true. Amongst the 10 Commandments is: Thous Shalt Not Steal. This "prinicipal" (or what Zappa has called dogma) has been codified into law, and it has worked quite well. Laws against stealing prevent a large percentage of people from stealing. So, in that regard, dogma, became legislation, and it has worked to reduce crime. Now, where Zappa is right, can be illustrated by the Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery. Even though there were laws that made it illegal to cheat on your spouse. However, these infidelity laws haven't seemed to stop this "activity." So, the law really doesn't work. This goes along with Zappa's statement that legistaling morality doesn't work. As we can see by these two examples, legislating morality does work, but only some of the time. So, Zappa's statment is only partially true. About dogma becoming dangerous when it's codified into law: That depends on the dogma. Some dogma, when it's codified into law works, and benefits society. But, Zappa's point is that you can't have the church running the state. And, that is a good point. Of course if you "follow the money" (as he's pointing out), it will lead you to who is buying influence. I think that the larger issue here, is the issue of campaign contributions, and allowing lobbyists to buy favor of congress people. With our system, we're set up to let "he who has the biggest pot of money to give to a politician" wins. I always enjoy Zappa's words.
