Woodturning | A Pin Cushion

- In this video you will see me woodturning a Pin Cushion using tulip wood, a cottonball and a small swatch of harris tweed fabric.
This is a simple turning for beginner's like me. I thought it would make a great craft stall item or nice gift for someone who likes to sew. Pin cushions are the best place to store your pins!
I turned it on a worm screw initially and then formed a tennon to remount it on my chuck.
The trickiest part was getting the fabric around the ball - with some wiggling and perseverance I prevailed.
I hope you enjoy this quick project!

Hahahaha! Exactly!!! That’s amazing for watching, Joe 🥰🤣🌲🦊🌲
Thanks, Claire, for this great little Christmas gift idea.
No problem ! Thanks for checking it out 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Beautiful! Good idea cutting the ball in half and can make 2 for 1 out of it 😄
I knew you’d approve of my thrifty execution 🤣 thanks for watching 🥰🌲🦊🌲
@@MakingItOutOfTheWoods forgot to say, I love a bit of Harris Tweed, too! Very classy!
Its a bowl with a pillow ...very nice! I'll make my mum one
I’m sure all Mum”s want a bowl with a pillow they can stick pins in ! Good job! Thanks for watching, Chris 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Very creative project 👍👍👍 good wood work like my friend 👏👏👏🤝🤗
Hey! Thank you! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Brilliant that just gave me an idea for daughters Christmas present. X
Great!!!! I’m sure you’ll make an awesome one 🥰🌲🦊🌲
very nicely done Claire

Thanks for watching my friend 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Excellent!
Nice job Claire!
Hey! Thanks, Dave. Handy little thing to have 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Nicely done 😊👍🏼 I‘m gonna make one just like that for my future sewing projects!
Great! Wish I could sew! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Hopefully back with more videos soon 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Came out well mate 👍🏻
Hey! Thanks for watching, Danny 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Really cool
Thanks, Richard, quick little project 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Hi Claire! Nice video, the best way to start a frosty monday! Great project too, I think I`ll combine your idea with Andy´s suggestion, perfect for extra Christmas gifts since there´s a freshly awakened interest for needlework in the family... Take care! Claes.
I don’t see at all but I’m sure lots of people will love them. Good idea to combine both elements. Thanks for watching, Claes 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Hi Claire...
That's a great little project... and very well executed...
They would do very well at a craft fair...
An entertaining video as always...
Take care...All the best.....Andy x 🦊
Thanks Andy, not sure how to fix the cushion in properly if I was going to sell them but this one stays in well enough with the hot glue. 🥰 thanks for watching my friend 🌲🦊🌲
Here is a suggestion Claire...
Use the 1/2 cushion but cut or turn a disc 8 or 10 mm thick the same diameter as the cushion...
Then you could staple the fabric to the sides of the disc... as you would with upholstery...
This method would only need a rebate in the top to fit the disc into...
Make any sense?
Ahh, Good thinking Batman! Might try that when I get chance - should work a treat x
Another nice one Claire, and with a very good explanantion of all the steps.
I'm sure that making the video took you more time than the actual project! 😎
Always seems to be the way! Thanks for watching - I’m trying different styles - voice over, no voice over, music, no music - just to see what work best. What do you think? 🥰🌲🦊🌲
@@MakingItOutOfTheWoods Well, in that respect YT is very unpredictable and I'm probably not the best person to give instructions. Each time I think a video will do well it turns out to be a disappointment but the ones of which I had lower expectations often did very well.
Meanwhile I'm just doing what I can within the time available and just hope for the best.
Yeah, that’s very true. I did mean, what do you personally prefer though, a video with voiceover etc?
@@MakingItOutOfTheWoods Voiceover seems to work best, never done one myself though. I'm lacking a silent room to do the recording.
Great work Claire. I thought you would have used a Welsh tartan though. LOL.
Love it.
Take care mate.
Cheers, Huw X
Ran out of Welsh tartan, used it on your voodoo doll 🤣🤣😜😜🤣 - you should see Andy’s though 🥰🌲🦊🌲
I was about to suggest cutting the wool ball in half and started to write this before you’d figured that out yourself. 😊 I’ve never made that style of pincushion, but I’ve made needle-felted wool versions without the woodturned base. I think that’s a lovely version, and am envious that I can’t create it.
Edit: I can’t look at your store following the link in the description in my TH-cam app. It appears to be broken.
Ha! Greta minds think alike! Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. I am always happy to take advise, I don’t actually see at all so wasn’t sure how it would work. I see you just favoured one of my Etsy stores - so did the link work eventually? 🥰🌲🦊🌲
@@MakingItOutOfTheWoods I had to search for you through Etsy. Link didn’t work. I went through fb and deduced from there.
😁 Awesome as always Claire. Its a lovely thing.... but we do need to see the Voodo doll in the lathe.. just curious what would happen 🤣😂. But please remove the pins first 🤣😂. Stay safe and stay foxy Claire 🦊😁👍
Now there’s an idea for another video - putting that in my ideas book!!!! Thanks for watching, Frank - hope you’re feeling better my friend 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Great result! And another great video too, you seem to be way more relaxed now and it shows. Well done.🏆😁👍
Thanks Huey, helps that I’m not In front of the camera much at the moment I think. 😁🌲🦊🌲
Really great project Claire perfect for those pins :-) thanks for sharing.
Really quick project - thanks for watching as always 🥰🌲🦊🌲
Also... turning a Voodoo doll is much trickier.... 📌📍🧷
Mmm true 😂🌲🦊🌲
Well done Claire, that Tulip Wood has some nice pattern in it and shows up really well.
I like using hot glue but never keen as a final fixing agent, think that's because over time then end up failing.
Great job!
Yep, you’re right about the hot glue, but didn’t really know how else to fix it in there - if I made them to sell I would have to figure something else out. Luckily the fabric was nice and thick so jammed it in there well enough. 👍🌲🦊🌲
Claire, very nice and very well done video on the process. A viewer commented below that the ball you used was Wool, but when you cut it, it appears to be more of a foam like material. Could you please clarify on this as to what the ball you used was made from.....thanks
It was polystyrene- I think wool would be better because I believe it doesn’t dull pins but I’m not certain, sewing is one thing I don’t do. Hope that helps /and that makes so much for watching 🥰🌲🦊🌲
A great project and video as always. Now can you take that needle out of the voodoo doll please its starting to hurt😆
Ha! Ha! I would never have a voodoo doll of you (at least I wouldn't tell you if i did )...a few other makers, maybe!! Thanks for watching, the BIG one soon! wink wink x
Amazing work. I'll have to try this. The coin insert is really neat. Where could I find something like that?
Ahh, thank you. I got it from a guy called ‘smelly cat creations’ on IG - it’s laser etched 🥰🌲🦊🌲
nicely made where did you get youe name disc from please
Thanks for watching. Check out ‘smelly cat creations’ he makes the discs for me, has a website here in UK 🇬🇧 👍
A superb little project Claire and very well demonstrated👌 I would say you are well passed the beginner stage👏
Cheers and take care Bram
That’s very kind, I mostly just point the carbide at the wood and let my Brian run wild though- test will be when I get to try a traditional tool or two I reckon! Thanks, Bram x
