- Willie announces he won't be home for Christmas, bringing an argument from Doug; Buddy asks Kate to give odd jobs to the school custodian.
(alternate description):
Doug's quarrel with Willie almost leads to a heart attack. Buddy brings home school janitor Mr. Duffy for the holiday, much to Kate's chagrin.
I love Sada Thompson's dry humor in all of the "Family" episodes. Always makes me laugh.
She was am amazing Actress from Broadway stage to film she was the Best!!❤️❤️
Sada was wonderful..as a child I thought sada was just too tuff.
Sada was a great mom n just didn't spoil her children as I was. .
In 60s n 70s parents wanted their kids to have things they didn't. Sada just was a great actress also ..wow
Yes an amazing actress she was ❤
This family had more "talks " than my family did in the 18 years i was in it !! More in one episode than we ever had.
Lots of drama requires lots of "talks"!!
@@jenniferwilcox9759 Thing is most families have drama but do not talk. That is the point.
TV show.
This was such a great program in the late 70s
Such a wonderful series showing family love in the complexities of life most realistically, but it has one major deficiency and that is to show parents heavily reliant on alcohol to be relaxed
Great writing and acting made this the great show it was
I’d hope broken things get fixed in everyone’s family this year.
Thank u for that I need it and u to
Thank you you too let's hope so have a BLESSED HOLIDAY SEASON 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
A great episode of Family.
Now that it’s almost Christmas 2020 those words ring truer than ever. I echo that sentiment this year for families the world over.❤️
Bless you
Family was my favorite ❤ show. THEY DON'T MAKE SHOWS LIKE THAT ANYMORE 😪. James Broderick 😔 was a class act.Farhana.
You can say that again. The shows today suck.
I was 15 when the show started it was my favorite ❤️ they sure don’t make them like that anymore 🙏🏻
I love these Christmas episodes!
👍🏽💯🤗🎄❄️⛄📯☃️
Gotta LOVE this show man! l'm on a Family _bender_ cuz l didn't watch them all in the 70's like l _should have!_
I'm on a Family bender now, myself!
Thank you for the upload. Each episode is a gift to step back into my youth.
Bittersweet isn't it?
P 💩
Forty years have past & this episode still brings tears. Thank you for sharing this video. Made my Christmas.
Mine to.
Thanks so much for posting family. This show was so progressive at the time. Awesome on every level ❤️
Love watching Bring back Memories.
this serie is amazing
Part of my childhood years
This show premiered when I was a sixth grader. My mother did not like me to watch it because of its mature, for that time anyway, themes, but I used to sneak around and watch it anyway. I loved Kate Lawrence. She was the calm, reasonable heart of her family that I always imagined was an ideal housewife. Of course, the soap opera aspects were a little over the top, and bringing in Quinn Cummings when Buddy started getting too old was an early example of jumping the shark. But I still love this show and I listen to these reruns on TH-cam while I work because it reminds me of my early teen years. At a time when I felt very awkward about my place in the world, being able to spend an hour with the Lawrence family once a week eased my discontent somewhat.
Quinn Cummings was so annoying...
I agree Family is a great program watched it when I was a teenager
Family,
It was so special for me.
I looked forward to it every Thurs or was it Tuesdays. Wow. Xo
Wow great shows was 1979
This is a great episode. Thank you for the upload!!
I never watched this show when is was young. This is absolutely a wonderful show. When I was young I wanted to be kristy mcnickel . Her acting was so wonderful she seamed like she would be a pers9n u could just talk to! She was great!
Gee... I remember this episode. I'd just left home for college.
Thanks for the upload. 1979 was my second Christmas.
1979 was my third Christmas. If I remember correctly, that was our first Christmas after my folks bought the nice house we lived in the Suburbs in Central Florida in the town of Lakeland before moving to Middle Tennessee a few years later. I don't remember it, but I remember seeing pictures from that Christmas. Me, my older brother and sister, and my younger cousin.
I LOVE this show! Thank you.
Sadly James Broderick was gone less than 2 years later. A great show. Each episode was maybe a bit overly dramatic each week but this brings back God memories
Wow maybe these issues were real.
So sad that James Broderick passed away so young.....we just never know how long we have.
How old ehen he died
"God memories"...
@@SnazzyDetritus obviously I meant GOOD memories.
ABC ruled the airwaves during this era.
So did Spelling-Goldberg
That is true. Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg are a huge part of why ABC ruled the airwaves in the late 1970s. Also notice in the late seventies where many NBC affiliates put in bids to become ABC affiliates. The winners became ABC while the losers became NBC, which was in the toilet as a Network. Even Fred Silverman couldn't work his magic to save the Peacock network, as they'd have to wait until Brandon Tartikoff had to take over the reigns to turn the network around. While NBC had a good twenty year run, it is now the low man on the totem pole as far as ratings go.
I know of several affiliates that swapped ABC and NBC in the late seventies. For instance, in my home State of Tennessee, in Knoxville, WATE Channel 6 was an NBC affiliate while WTVK 26 was ABC. In 1979, they swapped places where WATE became ABC and WTVK became NBC. However, in 1988, WBIR 10, the CBS station at the time, took over the NBC affiliation and WTVK became CBS. Not long afterwards, WTVK 26 became WVLT 8, which is still today's CBS station in Knoxville.
Thanks for the upload😊
I remember watching this show in the 80's in reruns after school and wished I had family like this family and a older brother like Willie, as my family was. horribly mean.
Yessss this family and little house on the prairie,I miss these family values
Not alone. Most families were not like this wonderful one
I come from a broken family and I wish I had a Family like this Family they really love and care for each other .This show deal with real life problems.
I’m so sorry you had a horrible family. I hope you have a beautiful family of your own and Happy Holidays 💚🎁
@@nadinedaoud2538 Thank you
I watch this for Sada’s scenes. She reminds me of my beloved mother who has now been gone an unbelievable 10 years. Sada reminds me of my mom’s earnestness, dignity, and never failing sense of being there for me right and especially when I was wrong. Strongest bond of love in this world is mother child bond. It triumphs over death.
I never watched this show. This mother is 100% amazing 👗
What a response !
“‘I’m sorry but I just can’t concentrate on your feelings right now “ 👍
This is so awesome brings back memories ❤😌what a era.
‘Can we just forget about Willy?’ Wow, Doug, WOW.
One thing I noticed since I started watching the family is how Kate and Doug seem so concerned over money yet he’s a lawyer and she’s a teacher living in a very middle class neighbourhood ❤
This was Awesome show so Glad to Have the Re Runs
Great Character Actor, J Pat O'Malley was the voice of the elephant in Disney's JungleBook.
Please I'm begging Netflix, Amazon, HBO MAX , etc do a special Family reunion. I loved that show since I was a kid. Watching it every week on ABC helped me to deal with my messed up child hood
Every network has to turn it down to do a reunion special. And they all say "No".
the parents are dead - have been for a long long time . James Broderick died of cancer only a year or so after this show ended . wouldn't be the same without them - especially Sada Thompson .
@markelijio6012 OK I didn't know this thank you.
Doug is very hard on Willie because he doesn’t know what the future holds for his health and future. Only problem, Willie has no idea
The problem is Doug would have acted like that even if he hadn't had heart issues?
Willie dropped out of high school. I’d worry too..
Willie is a spoilt BRAT!
I though it was entertaining how the doctor told Doug that drinking was ok but he had to avoid the racquetball.
"Thank-you. A Merry Christmas to you. And may I have the bill?" 😂
Love this show
I am wondering why they made Doug act like such a Jerk during a crisis. I am 60 and remember how much people did Drink back then, it is why I don't drink at all. With everything they did show how much they Did care about each other. I wish people followed traditions like they did years ago. I am so glad you shared these episodes
I was surprised of the drinking in the episodes.I never touched the stuff. I used to watch the series every day! They don't have quality shows like this on tv anymore. This show, the waltons,Little huse on the prairie, 8 is enough were my favorites.
I remember all my parents friends drinking back in the day. My parents would come home from work relax and have a cocktail before dinner.
People still drink today
I don't drink either other than the occasional Diet coke, and that's maybe once a week. I forget how much people drank in the 70's.
Thankyou 😀
You would think that Kate would be more generous and enthusiastic about giving an underpaid lonely old man a little extra paid work around Christmastime. After all, her family has plenty of money. She is being uncharacteristically miserly in this episode.
The script isn't well written, I think.
Willie should have ended up with Selina Magee, period.... End of story. They we're a match, had chemistry, and made sense together.
Family was high drama and Willie was really the most responsible out of the three💜. His protective nature was what made him very handsome🥰🙏💜💕
Gosh if they were high drama ,idk what my family was..Single mom with 4 daughters ...lived in a 2 bedroom apt in the 70s.
@@lilwinged5291 Sounds like "One Day At A Time"!
@@widowrumstrypze9705 I'm literally hearing the theme song now 🤣.. This is it ...🎶🎶.. this is it ...😆
HOW MUCH DID HE REALLY CARE ABOUT HIS FAMILY. ALL HE HAD TO DO IS GO TO THE DOCTOR INSTEAD OF BEING A JERK TO WILLIE.
James Broderick was a class act a 👍 true gentleman. Farhana
At 44:10 when the doctor says we need to slow the heart rate down…Doug looks like he is sipping on coffee! Lol. Not good!
I’ve been binge-watching Seasons 1-3 and just skipped ahead to watch this Christmas episode from Season 5. The writing is much different in this episode, with more comedy thrown in, and Doug’s character was not as sensible and mature as in the past. Willie dumping baby powder on himself seemed a little silly and odd. Still love the series though😊
Baby powder is the closest thing they get to snow in Pasadena!
Sadly the series deteriorated somewhat with the addition of the Annie character. Very unrealistic the way she behaved, like a mini-college professor who thought she knew everything. Very snobby and smart mouthed as well. It's a shame they didn't write the character to be just a normally behaved kid.
I think they got the idea from her character in The Good-Bye Girl the year before, Lucy, they were very similar.
The irony of the dad having a heart attack, the actor playing the dad, James Broderick, died 3 years later in 1982
thats so sad
@@lindalundmark5985 Matthew Broderick's father in real life.
In other comments it said cancer. I wonder if he had it here if so and knew.
@@greenonions5296 yes thyroid cancer. Not a heart attack
They love ❤️each other sooooooooooooooooooooo much, and it's always 💫🧚magical, thank 🤙you ❗❕
Willie is always dependable. He behaves like a douchebag at all the right times. He'll be sixteen years old for the rest of his life, doin' his own version of Will Farrell, screaming for meatloaf.
I’d love to see a family reunion (less Kate and Doug, of course) in current time!
A reunion movie was planned in the late 1980's, dealing with Kate getting married again after Doug's death. But then Meredith Baxter complained that she didn't have enough lines or something like that. Ultimately the movie was scrapped.
jensmom604 Nancy WAS always difficult!
They did plan a reunion TV movie with the idea of possibly reviving the series in 1988. But the writer's strike that year messed up the production plans and the reunion was scrapped.
Just read an article saying Meredith would not take part in any reunion show over the years and Kristy has quit acting many years ago.
@@jensmom604 Really? I have never heard about this until now. Leave it to Meredith Baxter to fuck it up. I don't know why that was an issue for her, anyway. Many episodes she wasn't even on. I would have loved to have seen that.
That'd be nice to have Kate find happiness after Doug has been gone for several years. Seen Nancy following in her father's footsteps as a lawyer, little Timmy as a teenager, Willie would have reconnected and married Selina and they'd have a family of their own, Buddy would have been successful in whatever she was doing, and Annie would have gone off to college.
Why didn't he just tell his wife!
He's the strong, silent type
Doug yells everyone instead of saying what’s bothering him
A perfect family 🤗
Society has changed, and the shows on tv! I'd go back to 79 if I could! Could these be,the good ol days, In, 2065?
Seem like a stretch to imagine anyone missing these years!
This is the meanest thing Willie ever did.
We all know Willie’s spoiled by his parents but in this case, REALLY feel like Doug acted like a total child this entire episode, asking the whole world to revolve around him and HIS traditions. When traditions start becoming a prison to loved ones, that’s when they need to be reassessed & altered if/as needed. Kids need to be allowed to move forward w/their own lives...if you have a good relationship w/them, they’ll always return.
Isn't this the truth.
Willie will always return, because he'll never leave his parents' damn property
Doug needs to grow up!!!!!!!!! Heck they could spend New Year's Eve together as a family!
Blame the writers. I would have written it differently. We have had scares in our family with cancers and I had a heart attack in 2021 and our parents are all dead and none of us acted like he did. We acted like grown-ups. No one making scenes and shoving other family members. I think it should have been written differently. But this is a drama. - so drama.
My aunt in Vancouver had her 4 kids and their families every Christmas, but complained to me what a lot of work that was with all the cooking, gifts etc. It was her choice to do that, but she couldn't stand her kids making their own traditions.
If I had a son like Willie, I’d have a heart attack too.
I love Willie, so thoughtful .
Lol😅
I like Willie , he is a good brother and is a creative, artistic individual.
Meanwhile, Gary Frank went from 26 to 30.
This is a sad episode he should told his wife he had to see a heart specialist. This is a good show Family from 70's and I was born in 70's . Willie has to spend Christmas with his family his dad serious ill he could die.
First Doug accuses Willie of dropping out and not getting a job and now he states he's never at home? Geesh Doug, let up!
What a bizarre ending. No one’s excited Willy is staying. He’s pouring baby powder he apparently had in his luggage onto his head, he’s ditched the girlfriend..🤪
WILLIE IS THE MOST SELFISH BOY YES I SAID BOY A REAL MAN WOULD CONSIDER OTHERS NOT JUST HIS OWN CARNAL DESIRES
My mom and I loved this show ! Memories....she's gone now. Willie always annoyed me as a kid, more so now.
Willie is an idiot but he cares about his family.
Willie could be such an ass sometimes.
@@rodneysexton1034 yeah, it reeeeeally shows...that's sarcasm, by the way
Was it not selfish of his father not to tell his family about his health problems?
Love Kristy McNichol. So pretty! Total girl next door. Not like the fake bimbo actresses of today!
Yes she was very good in the show.. I think she came out as being a lesbian.. which whatever floats your boat .. not judging .. was just mentioning that that I read it..
Rosemary SpaFalmouth In my opinion, this was when Kristy was at her prettiest. She looked absolutely gorgeous during season 5.
@@Jesuscares7680 it's a shame us guys lost her to the other side
I still support Kristy.
@@FreedomPost Yes loved her hair cut always wanted my hair to look like hers !
Kate let homeboy leave out without paying him the $1.28....I told you Ms Lawrence be low key pimpin!! I love it!! Hahaha😂🤣🤣🤣
I miss my father mother and brother they have all died
They seemed older then early/middle 50s
Also Doug always tell Kate he loves her and she never returns the saying!!
Kate has a good voice, lovely.
I'm upset that Doug didn't apologize for the scene he caused at the office party. Willie deserved an apology.
How did Willie go from 17 to 23 in four years? Lol
Need a stress test.
I see where this maybe going. Will has tickets that will probably give them to Harry.
People aged faster then. I am 4 years older, no lines and still skate.
People back in the day had children earlier, smoked, drank alcohol, got sick offen and died quicker.
Lucky you.🏆
Annie was bratty
And annoying..
Baby powder??? Not safe...
Kate the Goat Homemaker❤❤❤❤
What was the name of the episode where Willie's childhood best friend visiting town was arrested in a gay bar, and Willie rejected him? At the time, it was much talked about in my high school
The Rites of Friendship
I LOVE CHRISTMAS
It's not up Willie to be responsible for the family if his dad dies, Kate is quite capable of doing that.
Where did Annie come from?
Ladies...Willie is high maintenance!
please put the close caption
thank you all from argentina
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Why does Annie call Kate by her name but calls Doug dad?
She called the mom Kate and the Dad Doug.
Poor willy, he already feels guilty, his dad being hard on him
And look how Doug shoved Willie at the office in front of the staff. Wow!
Frankly, regardless of the reasons, I thought dad's attitude and behavior were absolutely despicable and unjustified; that was nothing short of emotional abuse. Shame on dad. Willie did not deserve that.
@@brianadkins3034 I know right, I like the dad in all the other episodes except this one lol

Doug was a real jerk in this episode
;*Family Strong*💪💪💪❤❤❤❤❤❤
The show is functional and dysfunctional ..I guess that's what the producers were trying to show.. sometime kind of a starchy self-righteous family sometimes a very kind close loving knit family.. Dodges and weaves ..I didn't like every one of them ..I don't particularly like this one ..
how do you tell an older son he has to be home for Christmas?? Hiding a heart attack from your wife?? I don't know.. anyway it was a good clean show in it's time ..it wouldn't make it now..
Doug was worried he may not be around much longer, and didn't quite know how to deal with his own mortality. Sadly enough, the actor (James Broderick) died just a few short years later.
Willie lived in his home ate his food and was catered to like a child. Yes Hereford he was treated as such
The point of the show was not that they were a perfect family and no one ever did anything wrong. It was that they were a bunch of goofballs, they made mistakes and each one of them acted like a tool from time to time but that they loved one another anyway.
The Lawrence family is dysfunctional because who ever heard of adult children over 21 living at home! They do have their good points. Only people in college should live at home until they graduate from college at age 21.
@@ShawnBenA very American comment. It's different in the rest of the world.
They seem more like buddies than husband and wife
Good strong marriage. Commitment.
A husband and wife should be best buds.
I love this show and it is generally so forward-thinking, but I notice some episodes that I don’t like relate to the upper middle class views of working people (the “slacker housekeeper,” “the inept plumber,” and the school custodian inventing side jobs). Kinda makes me think about why so many working people support Trump now: they think he represents them. Not true, but they have long been unappreciated.
If there is one thing in this world I will never understand, it's why anyone would choose to support donald trump.
Good points!
The dad is acting like a big baby....selfish, immature.
No he wasn't!!!!!!!
Willi with a beard 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Why is Kate so stingy and Doug so cranky in this episode?
Willie always thinking of himself.
sorry but the Doug character was always a bit of a dork with some enlightened moments but many totally unreasonable ones where he acts like a baby who wants everything his way
Doug was a bit of a goof. Kate was the true leader and true adult in that relationship. Doug's saving grace was that nothing was more important to him than the welfare of his family.
Doug and Kate wound up at an egg nog party that was crashed by Willie, who caught a hot blonde under the Mistletoe.
Lol😅
Willie is such a spoiled soy boy.
No he isn't he had the right to switch up have a change for once. He ( father) Should've been man enough to face and tell the truth instead of Hidding The facts and blowing up on everyone ESPECIALLY Willie . Bring Timmy have the girls get the tree whatever
This children disappoints me! no idea how to talk to parents - shame
This was broadcast during an era that started featuring "very special episodes" dealing with social issues that the public was beginning to "get woke" about, like teen pregnancy, interracial relationships, education issues etc. I've sampled enough of these uploads to wonder whether they gave homosexuality such a "special episode" treatment at any point, and almost hope that they didn't, given that these episodes could make you cringe nevertheless for the way they would take such care to present both sides of some issue, lest the more bigoted members of the audience might get too offended and tune out permanently. Sure, they could somehow insinuate or even outright portray Buddy's gym coach as being a lesbian, perhaps presenting her lover during a dramatically scored 15 second scene midway through, but by the end they would inevitably find a reason for the lesbian coach to feel compelled to move away, returning the series to its status quo and ready to move on to its next very special episode.
So, should I keep watching to find out if Buddy had a lesbian coach in one such special episode, or even then was it still the consensus that such a time has yet to arrive, at least on the set of this show?
Yes, Buddy had an English teacher who was a lesbian.
It was upsetting to Buddy in eighth grade.
She liked the teacher but was nervous about the fact that the teacher was fired for having a relationship with a student.
Yes, she was compelled to move away.
