    Yugoslavia was in an odd position during early WW2. Italy had wanted to invade the state in early 1940, but largely due to German pressure, held off, until they finally decided to fight against Greece instead (big mistake). The Yugoslav military was actually pretty substantial for the time, and had they managed to fully mobilize, could have been a major threat to both the Germans and Italians.
    The nation had about 4,000 artillery pieces, many were aged and horse-drawn, around 1,700 of these were relatively modern, including 812 Czech 37mm and 47mm anti-tank guns. There were also about 2,300 mortars, including 1,600 modern 81 millimetres pieces, as well as twenty-four 220 millimetres and 305 millimetres pieces each. Of 940 anti-aircraft guns, 360 were 15 millimetres and 20 millimetres Czech and Italian models. The only mechanized units were 6 motorized infantry battalions in the three cavalry divisions, six motorized artillery regiments, two tank battalions equipped with 110 tanks, one of which had Renault FT models of World War I origin and the other 54 modern French Renault R35 tanks (which out-performed Panzer III's to a large extent) plus an independent tank company with eight Czech SI-D tank destroyers.
    Fully mobilized, the Yugoslav Army could have put 28 infantry divisions, three cavalry divisions, and 35 independent regiments in the field. Of the independent regiments, 16 were in frontier fortifications and 19 were organized as combined detachments, around the size of a reinforced brigade. Each detachment had one to three infantry regiments and one to three artillery battalions, with three organised as "alpine" units." All total, Yugoslav army numbers would have been around 700,000. With the ability to raise up to 1.2 million men.

      Interesting to read. Since the invasion was fairly shift I didn't put much information about it in this episode. Yet, it is interesting to read. Maybe something for a future episode. Thanks!

    @8:24 - lil correction:
    The banknotes that you are showing are not from 1980s, but from 1993-1994 inflation in Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia & Montenegro only). At that time, war (Croatia, Bosnia) was already in full swing.

    it's a shame you didn't mention Banovina Croatia, it's one of the bright moments in Yugoslavia. I always thought that an agreement for a federal state would have been reached if Germany had not invaded. maybe the Bosnians and Macedonians would come to a similar agreement, the Slovenians already had one, but it was not official!

    You clearly mention that the Croatian Ustaša regime committed mass atrocities during the second world war. You however completely fail to mention the mass atrocities committed by Serbian Četnik forces under Draža Mihailović as well as the mass atrocities committed by Tito's communist Partisan forces during and after WW2. Thousands of POST WW2 mass graves scattered throughout Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and elsewhere clearly show that Tito was also responsible for unspeakable acts of mass murder with even those accused of being collaborators with the axis occupying forces being denied any form of a trial, with the notable exceptions of Serbian Četnik leader Draža Mihailović and Slovenian Home Guard leader Leon Rupnik who were both tried and executed by the Yugoslav communist regime.

      Mentioning other atrocities won't make Ustashe look any better. There is actually a difference between killing civilians for their nationality or religion and killing in retaliation against collaborators and Nazis who committed or supported atrocities and were trying to flee with occupation forces. While there was often no trial, which can be argued as unjust, it was caused by understandable desire for revenge for all unspeakable atrocities done by occupying forces and their cronies during WWII. Just to put things into appropriate context.
      Ustashe were the worst of all in killing civilians, they made even German Nazis turn their heads in disgust with their methods. Next were Chetniks who slaughtered Muslims across Bosnia in an attempt to ethnically cleanse the area. However, mentioning Tito in this context equals trying to rewrite the history, put everyone in the same bag and depict Nazi collaborators as some sort of victims, which they most certainly are not.
      This historical revisionism is happening since '90ies all over former Yugoslavia as important Governments projects because in all ex-Yu countries there are nationalists and right-wingers trying to justify destruction of Yugoslavia and what their predecessors did during WWII by running a smearing campaign against only real antifascists and liberators - Tito's partisans. You can see some effects of this in the comments below, lots of people parroting same "alternative facts" these Nazi apologists push. Today it is frowned upon to even mention Yugoslavia in good context in Croatia and Serbia. It is interesting how these ultra-nationalists, who should hate each other by default, and who fought each other in recent civil war actually get along nicely when it comes to attacking anti-fascists, that seems to be one thing they can't stand, it led to their cooperation during WWII as well as today.
      One correction I have for the video is that Tito did not bankrupt the country. True, it was struggling a bit after his death but it started to stabilise under Ante Markovic's government, it could have continued to exist or even become part of EU had it been given a chance for reforms. All socialist countries had financial problems due to being isolated for their ideology that stands in contrast to capitalist democracies and Yugoslavia was no exception despite strong industry and know-how.
      Money you shown is from Milosevic's era of national-socialism, he caused international sanctions to be imposed which then caused hyperinflation. It was his toxic nationalist fantasies that started the disintegration of Yugoslavia and brought him and his supporters to power during the process, today some of them are still in power so there are lots of vested interests. Same happened in other ex-Yu countries, some people used nationalism to gain power and they are still riding on that chauvinist narrative. Of course, only power and money grabbing are behind these ideas
      Anyway, I'd like to thank you History Hustle for making good content, I appreciate your effort. It really helps in this flood of foolishness and fascist fakery we're suffering today. Sorry if my post was too long

    Today is 29.XI = Dan Republike (date on the coat of arms SFRJ, before FNRJ & DFJ)
    A great day in the history of the peoples and nationalities of Tito's Yugoslavia!
    Originally, Dan Republike (Republic Day) was the celebration (non-working holiday with commemorations, etc... on that occasion, the children were admitted to the alliance of pioneers... blue hat, white shirt and red neckerchief...) of the re-establishment of Yugoslavia on the second conference of the Anti-Fascist Council of National Liberation of Yugoslavia (AVNOJ) in Jajce (in BiH, which were liberated by partisans led by Tito) in 1943., as well as the proclamation of the socialist Yugoslavia on the same date in 1945., based on the principles of brotherhood, unity and equality!

      @@HistoryHustle U make videos to increase your income. Second, big problem what u see of Yugoslavia is that was not created by the Serbian people.. Othere powerful coutries decided how this territory would look like.(after 1ww). Before that there were 2 Balkan wars, ideology was to free all Serbs living in otoman empire. War was won, but not all serbs were free, becaus Astro-hungary anexed Bosnia-and-Hercegovina. As u know ww1 did come short time after that.. But not beacus of serbs, but Austro-hungary wanted to destroy serbia.. They acused serbs for killing Duke... Witch was not true. U can' see accurete evidance on "Great War Channel". Then Kingdom of Yugoslavia was created. The ideology was there, all Serbs living in one coutry... But only that remained, everything else was changed. Then Tito robed the Serbian people by creating federal states. Problems of that u cane see in bosnia and hercegovina... Type on Google maps "Republika Srpska" or go on this link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republika_Srpska ... See how much territory in bosnia is covered by serbs. And why u think All serbs don't live in one country?!
