  • In this video we are building a couple of DIY Pasture Pig Farrowing Huts in anticipation of our first ever farrowing here at Watts Way Farms. We did not follow any written plans for these huts, but instead went off two different videos from fellow farmers whose channels we like to follow on TH-cam.
Jordan at Farm Builder: / farmbuilder
Chuck at Sheraton Park Farms: / sheratonparkfarms
Here is the materials list for the two (2) pasture farrow huts like we built in this video. This list does not include screws or nails. I used 3-inch screws wherever I was attaching two pieces of dimensional lumber, and 2-inch screws wherever I was attaching plywood. For the roof, we just used standard tin roof nails with the little rubber washers on them.
All of the lumber is pressure treated:
    • 2 - 4x4x8
    • 2 - 2x6x8
    • 4 - 2x12x8
    • 15 - 2x4x8
    • 3 - ¾ in. x4x8 Plywood
    • 2 sheets of 8 foot galvanized tin
    • 2 sheets of 12 foot galvanized tin
I had to the get 2 sheets of 12-foot tin and cut it down for the first hut because I used the full length 8-foot and ½ inch 2x4’s on the cross pieces and had it all built before I realized my tin would not overlap by an inch on each side. On the 2nd hutch, I shortened everything to work with the 8-foot sheets of tin.

This was cool. I did this with my Dad 20 years ago until we had a house fire and lost everything but now that I have the land I'm bringing back the farm so I can teach my boys how to live off the land and be self-sustaining. Great video thank you for sharing

In my experience you want just enough bedding for them to be comfortable at first. After the piggies are born you can add some more. They have a hard time navigating from the rear to the dinner plate when the bedding is real bulky.

The sows are not going to want to lay across the 4x4s being that close together. Never mind, I see you changed em.
