I like this technique. Usually I see this being accomplished with pigments but I prefer the acrylic paints for a more permanent finish. I will be using this method for my own building and watching this video often. Thanks for sharing it with us.
That moment when something so simple dawns on you after YEARS of fighting a problem... I about knocked myself out when I slapped my forehead. I can imagine professional terrain makers must really be beginning to hate you mate. Is there a terrain inner circle, better hope not otherwise you'll have a hit put out on you. I have always looked a terrain and thought "how the hell?", but you make it look sooo easy! Thanks Mel. Oh and liked the music, very polished.

I wonder if different tap water would have an effect on the washes. Living in Brum, I have lovely soft Welsh water; but some areas are going to have horrible hard water. Would the lime scale effect the washes? Aaagh! Just stabbed myself in the thumb with a craft knife... "MEDIC!!!" Those regularly spaced streaks make is look a bit like iron oxide leeching out of rebar in the concrete. The last bits of shadow you tipped in really made the facade zing. Another very cool tutorial.

As anyone who watches my videos knows I'm a big fan The Army Painter range and have found their inks tend to work more like a glaze than the GW washes for example. It's great for blending layers on miniatures but I was wondering how they could be used for weathering scenery like this?
+Talk Wargaming In the third vid I referenced at the start, the flocking one, I used agrax to stain static grass, so they definitely have a place. Ink washes are also regularly used on rockfaces, plastic plants, etc, but as terrain builders, we make our own ink washes using acrylic ink, matt medium and flow aid because the volume we use makes wargaming washes financially prohibitive mate.

Thats a good technique about pre-wetting the areas to be washed. would that work on models as well? this definitely looks like a technique where you want to go with less is more, you can always add more weathering but its hard to take it off.

+Vikki Wilson You really need to be working with alcohols with pigments and pastels, they don't work well with water. Mike at terranscapes did a good comparison vid on it, I'd check that out.
I have been making terrain for a long time, and have been learning a lot in this series. Excellent advice and methods. one quick question about the building - what about the rubble? Do you use washes on it? Do you follow up with a dry brush?
