Blindcattan yeah man... such a good tip. you can water it down so far and it is such a good texture. I bought the multipurpose stuff in a 3.5 gallon package for nine dollars. I use that ish on everything now. 😂🤣😂
Now I don't feel guilty about dragging my feet on finishing my current build. I'll pick up some spackle tomorrow and get to work on this process. Mel, thanks for the video. I'm going to have a kick ass table to play on thanks to you!
Great tips! I could have done with this vid a year ago when I first started experimenting with filler. I resorted to using my in-built spreaders - fingers - to get the effect I was after.
This is a great tip! Thanks! You can do so much with the stuff! In the states I can buy it from the local builder store by the gallon for the price of lunch. Since adopting it, I've found that the fussy-minded (hi!) can experiment with various sponges at various stages of dryness for various effects, and it dries rock-hard (being gypsum).
I like the slumping broken floor sections 'held up with rebar'. Refreshing floor technique. I've neved considered watering down filler/spackle that much. It's a great tip. Thanks for sharing. :)
***** I thought I'd already replied to this but .... Thanks matey, watered down filler is excellent, just remember to seal with watered down pva and before you ask, no, I've never tried mixing filler, water and pva matey ;-)
What I love about this build is the way you have made a substantial building that still has tons of playing space....Stalingrad gonna make me a version of this for my WWII skirmishing :)
hi good series, one thing i do for wall texturing to create a grit finish is mix fine sand into emulsion paint add some PVA for bonding and stipple onto foamboard surface, always seems to work, but remember not to spread the surface to thinly with the paint needs to be even.
great idea and I have a ton of that stuff left over from all the house renovation we did. Thought for a second your wee girl was giving us all the finger through the door at the end there lol.
that's really good looking Mel, I must have missed the previous build videos on this one- I shall find and make this my nxt project. As ever so inspiring and thanks for the upload
you are a wonderful teacher of this material ... probably because you know it so well. Please take "yeah" out of your vocabulary. "That's right, yeah, we just use this type of brush, yeah, then we paint, yeah, " ......................... aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing your expertise! I'll be putting this to good use for making dungeons for SDE. How does the filler hold up to Still Water for making water features in a dungeon type tile?
Love the videos. I have been watching the complete series. I have one quick question. What technique did you use to make the bullet holes? Did you just poke at the walls with a metal pick?
Hi Mel, I was doing a terrain piece using the techniques here, but I made a larger surface (ca 15x15cm) with the stippling technique. It ended up warping the foamboard and bending it at an angle. Did I use too much water in the filler or something and it got inside and tightened up when drying maybe? Trying it on the back as well and putting a weight on it to see if it will bend back.
Question for anyone using filler in the U.K. I am working on a foam board building, and preferred the filler texture as opposed to grit. I'm in the States, so I'm using spackling. All the spackling here, that I've found, has warning labels about it being possibly cancer causing. Does filler have the same warnings? Just wondering if there is an alternative, but with the same results.
Very nice building. I agree with you about realistic damage. Buildings built with concrete or similar, are tough enough to stand all sorts of fragment damage. The larger holes look like RPG hits. Nice technique as well. That must completely &(*^&(%*&) the brush though.
john tailby Cheers matey, it does knacker brushes but I buy 12 of those brushes for £1, so it's not really an issue, the fillers more costly than the brushes! lol
Hi Mel, Thanks for the great techniques. I'm new to terrain building--just six months in. When I began last summer, I started by making two basic bunkers out of open cell (squishy) foam. I never finished them, and moved on to better materials like XPS and MDF. But now I'd like to go back and complete the projects. The bunkers are glued with PVA but they're still squishy. Question: should I use this filler on the walls to firm them up so I can paint them and eventually play on them, or should I use Mod Podge? Thanks for your time! Bo in Sacramento, CA
I have mixed filler & paint - just bog standard acrylic craft paint. It works pretty well. It needs some serious mixing to get an even spread of colour, but a marbled effect doesn't matter once you get as top coat on. I have used the same mix to make 'rubble' too.
Due to the nature of video the details are unclear. I suggest making pictures and editing them into the end of your videos so we can see the end result more clearly. Looks hopefull though. This is my number one irritation when working with foamboard :)
You sir have changed my life. I use filler all the time and never thought about using water

Did you seal with watered down PVA before or after the watered down filler?

no mate

zwicky93 Cheers mate, I like my pieces to be playable as possible

+Colin Jeffery I do the same, there's a vid on it in the playlist somewhere mate

HaggisLite Bloody kids!
It'll be great to see this once it's painted
BurningSky93 not far off now!
alot of great things going on there Mel. thanks for sharing
BlackTower Terrain No worries matey, glad you liked it

shirlzknight Well there's plenty to watch!
Очень классно и невероятно реалистично!!! Хорошая конструктивная идея)))
Love this stuff great work on the ruins and on the tutorial TT - Gotta watch all the other vids leading up to this!
Nonehasthisnamekek1 Thanks matey, you've got plenty of viewing ahead
Awesome tutorial as usual, great work mate!
PootyboiStudios Glad you liked it matey
Nice vid mate

Hello again xD
That looks Beautiful. I must do some of them for my rynns world campaign
grizzgull bolorag If you do, post the pics to my facebook matey
youre awesome man, inspiring for sure
+Hector Garza thanks bud
you mentioned on your comprehensive foamboard video about making a battle damage video. please do!
in the foamboard playlist

djkulp1 yeah, not going to happen, I've tried and it's easier just to consider it as a bonus drinking game ;-)
lol ... each time you say yeah, you drink a beer ... drunk in 15 minutes.

MegaDoomer101 Just seal it first to prevent water effect creeping and it'll be fine mate, it'd probably be fine without but I'd seal it just in case.
Awesome, thanks!
Thanks for sharing your tips with us! I added you on Patreon.
Thanks for your support bud!
brilliant tutorial! i will be trying this out. did you ever show this building finished, if so could someone post link?
TheSh1tstorm It's still staring at me waiting to be painted mate lol
TheTerrainTutor My body needs to see it finished.
Great stuff. I wonder if that stippling filler technique can be used for cement bases.
dotjn5 can't see why not mate, give it a go and let me know ;-)
Love the videos. I have been watching the complete series. I have one quick question. What technique did you use to make the bullet holes? Did you just poke at the walls with a metal pick?
wayne pedranti A scalpel actually, there's a battle damage vid in the series where I cover it mate :-)
Thanks
Great vid Mel. Thanks for sharing. :)
DrDeathmonger Thanks matey
Great job
+dani cool Cheers buddy
Good Job on that awesome building :-)
Steven Bradley Thanks matey :-)

Just give the otherside a coat of 50/50 water/pva, it'll warp it back straight again bud ;-)
great stuff mel!
Greg Huff Thanks matey ;-)
how are you doing mate?
That is an excellent tip!
Gene Jordan Glad you found it useful matey

Wear gloves bud, also checkout texturing foamboard building with filler in the foamboard playlist, that technique uses a brush ;-)
Hi Mel, great vid again! Definitely wanna try this method. One question, what is the best method to get filler out of your brush? Water?
yep, soak it mate
What height do you build each floor at? Love your videos!
3inches
Very nice building. I agree with you about realistic damage. Buildings built with concrete or similar, are tough enough to stand all sorts of fragment damage. The larger holes look like RPG hits. Nice technique as well.

Hey, great video, I'm gonna do this to my foam board building but what's the best ration for filler and water? Thanks.
RxPxD I couldn't give you a ratio mate as I mix on the fly, just get a bit of spare foamboard and have a play before to tackle your builds
Wonderful work Mel does the filler chip as bad as plaster??
TribalwarsLedgend No filler is a lot more resistant to chipping that plaster mate
Awesome to know thanks will deffentally put this into effect :)
Does this filler act as a barrier for styrofoam and the like , as far as spray paint goes .you know like the pva glue would for the same application ?
+dani cool Yes mate, just make sure you cover it all

Either will work mate but I prefer filler
what type of foamboard do you use, is it paper sided...and how do you stop it from warping from the paint...mine always get a warp to it
+Lee Johnson It's standard card sided foambaord mate, I don't have problems with warping as the walls tend to brace them mate
Is the technique you showed at 8:45 suitable for medieval buildings' walls? Thanks for the informative video :)
Yeah mate
@@TheTerrainTutor Thanks! I tried it and it worked great! :)
could you use one of those foam paint rollers for texture the large flat surfaces instead of stippling?
great tip matey thankyou :)
Adaminski41 no worries matey
I'm sure you've already answered this, but what scale do you build at.
28mm 1:54 normally
What's is the actual name of the filler , like if I was going to buy some right now what would I go to look for or shop online for.? I'm in America
It's just spackling (in the US it has a different name). You can find it in any hardware store
Its posible to mix Filler + Base paint? you know, to have done the first base color of the building
Gala Pacheco Haven't done it but I can't see any reason why you couldn't mate
I have mixed filler & paint - just bog standard acrylic craft paint. It works pretty well. It needs some serious mixing to get an even spread of colour, but a marbled effect doesn't matter once you get as top coat on. I have used the same mix to make 'rubble' too.
Anyone know what Filler is called in the USA? Are we talking about Spackling? Joint Compound? Or is it something else?
***** Yes, I believe it's called spackle across the pond mate
Thx
10:14 - Why is that house shouting at me?
Due to the nature of video the details are unclear. I suggest making pictures and editing them into the end of your videos so we can see the end result more clearly. Looks hopefull though. This is my number one irritation when working with foamboard :)
irongollem Can't add the pictures to the vid but the finished texturing pics are here mate ... imgur.com/a/RFsDN hope that helps ;-)
Ah brilliant mate, this looks seriously awesome! Will sure try this myself next time I go building concrete like terrain!
Good video yeah but one minor complaint yeah and after a while yeah you really start listening yeah. Watching out for next video yeah. :-)
suddenly a face in the window 11:43
Now they just barge in on the vid lol
