Osaka Castle(大阪城) is the most visited site in the city. The magnificent castle on the hill is an ode to everything that was great in the past and even of future possibilities.
Unfortunately for the romantic and the historian, it is not the original castle, but rather a replica. The main donjon, towering above the expansive gardens and stone walls, is a 1931 concrete re- creation of the original that was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉) in 1585. With the conscripted help of all the feudal lords of the nation and the labour of tens of thousands, the massive structure was completed in just three years. It was destroyed 30 years later by Tokugawa Ieyasa (徳川 家康) and then again rebuilt.
Much of the original grounds, moats and walls still stand, however. Extensive restoration work to the castle building, which houses an impressive multistorey museum, was completed in 1997. The view from the top floor is impressive.
Immediately southwest of the castle grounds is the Osaka Museum of History, which documents Osaka's history from its earliest days, through its feudal years, and on to its development as a modern, thriving city. With plenty of fun exhibits, the museum is especially accessible to kids.
