Through the S&S in the scrap and adapt a CV carb to the Shovel. S&S carbs have destroyed more Shovel bottom ends than the amount of Shovelheads still running. The S&S is the first thing i scrap when buying a Shovelhead. Also theres a 5 step setup process to setting up a Super E or G. If the carb isnt set up right in those 5 steps after a test ride...you MUST remove carb and change jets then repeat the tuning process...for as many times as it takes. Twisting adjustment screws with wrong jets will only insure engine failure. Good luck and happy riding.
Seems fine now that I've played with it a little more. No fuel in the oil, and I got 42mpg on the last tank with easy starting and decent power. I have an extra, brand new, CV on the shelf, I've thought about trying it, but this seems good enough for now.
Just a thought? That linkage that goes from the forwards to the gearbox is bolted to the top of that bar! Maybe if you re drilled the bar maybe an inch down, it would make the shift pattern closer and have less misses?
good work mate love super e im running one blow through turbo on my 79 shovel and runs flawless had lot people tell me it would not work but like you just be persistent keep up good videos mate aslo on later model e carbs has an main jet air bleed which is a 40jet size with drag pipes can change to 50 60 jet size its like leaning of needle on slide it leans of carby in between idle jet coming onto the main later to clean u drag pipe sag
Great video, I'm kinda in the same boat as you, I just took my Shovel on her first ride a couple days ago, only about 4 miles and then my second ride about 7-10 miles. Still working out the bugs. Keep at it. Peace-out
Nice update, thanks! A bit of back pressure will help for sure. My 82 Sporty has 2 inch drag pipes (way WAY overkill but fitted by a long distant previous owner) and when run open are ear splittingly load - really painful, and no mid range roll on at all. I run a pair of 6 inch universal mufflers in the back of them, helped the noise and the mid range massively. Still not perfect, and with those pipes never will be, but better - as yours will be 👍
throw on some other exhausts with a little bit of silencer on like that liiks like the lowrider ones, it will give you some backpressure and that realy helps a lot with more low speed torque, I did that with mine when I bought it with open pipes
Mystery disappearing gas is always concerning 😨 One of my viewers mentioned your channel to me so I came to check out what you're doing! I subbed cause you ride old Harleys 😃 I have a custom shovel and a slightly modified 1994 Evo. Cool bike!!
Your getting closeŕ, keep playing with it when you have time. I was going to recommend you tighten the clutch spring nuts to stop the slipping but already recommended. I'll try this, S&S has a video on their site about drag pipes and options to correct the midrange sag. The first (and many) solution is to trash them and buy some S&S pipes (imagine that!) to cure it. They also do the double nut bolt, thumb screw, washer, various muffler options all tested on a dyno. Worth a look before spending more money. Good luck.
on your pipes- you don't need to go to trouble of trying to weld a washer, or a eye bolt in to prevent reversion in the pipes.... a simple double nutted bolt through the pipe works just as well, and is easier to do. Most drag pipes have a predrilled hole for a baffle- and thats the right spot- otherwise drill your hole, run a bolt thats long enough to reach top of pipe or just below it and then double nut it. Works prefect and eliminates that raspy tone in drags. lollipops are more of a gimmick (esp trying to "tune" one) and do nothing more than the plain bolt will do.
On my 94 sportster I had an issue where it was failing spark plugs so I just turned the petcock back a little to get less gas and over time fixed itself
try a different primary oil as well as adjusting the clutch a bit on the tighter side, right thing to do is get a new pack but this method will do for now
Hey Paul, I have a Super E on my 99 Fatboy. That thing will get 30 to 50 mpg's and everything in between. I'm going to take another look at my accelerator pump, Just been too easy to fuel up every 100 miles till now!!!
I have had nothi g but disappoints with S&S....maybe good, maybe not!? Threw a vm38 on my chopped up Ironhead and forgot about it! Runs great! CV carb runs great too! S&S.....meh at best!
Funny story, a while back I sold an Ironhead with a vm38 on it, the guy came to buy some parts from me this week and said he pulled it off to put a super E on. I liked that little Mikuni and would like to try another.
Nothing sounds better than a shovel head
hahaha, you're just like me when i'm out tuning one of my bikes, fuck it, lets get on it.

sounds to me like youve never ran a s&s if you really scrap them like you said let me know ill send you an address
Paul your're a genius! Genius- A person who is exceptionally intelligent or creative, either generally or in some particular respect. Great video!
I do love the sound of a Shovel
Good to see you putting some miles down on the ol Shovelhead 🤘
Yer rooster drank it ...he's a lush
He probably could've survived it too 🤣 that dude is insane

Might be worth trying? I think I just need to chuck the whole thing and start over 😅
My Carb is a Mikuni VM 38 on my 1983 FXWG. The Delorto pumper cracked its body. Ran a Delorto pumper on it for years.

Consider bolting in some 4" baffles into the drag pipes for back pressure.
Man i’ve been really wanting to buy my first bike and a shovel head is on top of my list

Thanks for the episode, always good to see you making progress. I'm deciding between Evo & Shovel, I want an older ride.
Well, an Evo is probably the logical choice for reliability and lower purchase price! But I sure do love the pre-85 stuff. Good luck
Shovelhead is the best route, although EVO'S are extremely dependable.
Hey man just wanted to say I been enjoying this series and I’m glad to see you making progress with this shovel.
Thank you n
just got mine a few days ago '75 FLH, your vids are a great help. Thanks.
Very cool glad to see you got it out for a ride

Indeed, I'm sure the drag pipes aren't helping
Gotta love a shovel , got 2 of em and a twin cam, ride the shovels the most, when you get em right there awesome !
The idle sounds amazing ❤

I like that brass tubing on the rocker boxes! I gotta check out some more of your vids!
Thanks for checking in! Subscribed back, dig your shovel. The brass stuff is holding up good and looks nice
@@buttcrackcycles thanks!!

I actually watched the video last week! Seems like the thumb screws do a pretty good job for only a couple bucks, might be what I try

I have an Ironhead Sporty that came with drag pipes. I haven't got it running yet but that will be my first solution.

Update to E3 spark plugs.

I tightened the basket about 1/4 turn and it seems to be doing ok for now.. Probably throw a new clutch in it over the winter!
Trying a couple of turns on the clutch spring nuts. That might solve your clutch slipping.
Yeah I meant to try that today, but I forgot 🤣 thanks for the reminder
yes bro put the lollipops in those pipes must have the back pressure for the health of your engine will sound better too

After playing with this, I'm at 42mpg which I think is ok, though not great
@@buttcrackcycles I’ve settled somewhere around 40 now, guess I should just be happy!!
Drain your oil and you will find the missing fuel, i wouldn't advise riding the bike until issue is repaired.
Put torque cones in the drag pipes, it will run better and they just drop in. I used them in my sportster and I thought they made a difference.
Is there any way to contact you ? I have a 81 FXE ...with some clutch issues and i am looking for some advice ?
If you have an Instagram find me on there under the same name and send a message

Out 1/4 " Ball valuve on the dang tank all carbs will dump gas if you dont shut gas off on tanks !
Lose the drag pipes they were made for wide open throttle as in raceing thats jus me saying great vid like your channel
Yeah I'm not crazy about the drag pipes, but it's what's on there. Might try the old school lollipop trick
😎👍
