I Bought a Harley For $700! Cheap Sportster Project
Why does it have to be kicked four times at first?
I had a '79 Ironhead and called it "the Neanderthal". Then I got a '97 Heritage and sold the ironhead cause I didn't have room for both otherwise I would have never sold it.
Not the first kick. 5th or 6 th
I had a '75 Shovel AMF bike never left me stranded like a EVO did once. Most people who bad mouth them never even owned one.
Music to my hears!
Nice pick up Paul. That's a great dream you have and I wish you all the success with it. Would love to come along on the journey with you and your family so please keep us updated on your progress. Cheers from down under 🇦🇺 Stan.
Wish I lived in the states purely for the cheap bikes, I'm in Australia and you can't even get a 500 for under 5K , sportsters the cheapest I've seen here are around 8K, I bought a 2000 Dyna wide glide that I thought was cheap well here it was cheap at 14K 30,000 on the odometer.....seriously thinking of saving up and importing one from the States even with shipping it might be cheaper than buying one here....would love an evo wide glide...
My shovel i prefer to hit the button on The handlbar.
Well said about Sportsters sir , I've had bigger Harleys but now have two totally standard modified EVO Sportsters a 1998 Sportster Sport and a2002 883R love em both, rigid mount carb and not to much modern electronic nonsense
😎👍😎
I just found a 2007 Sportster for sale, private seller, wants $5500 for it and it is not only very low mileage (only 1285 miles total and clean title), it is immaculate. You can see the bike is well cared for from the pics...you can see it is hooked up to a battery tender. I realize this is the first year for fuel injection, which is not what I wanted. Completely stock with a few HD add-ons. A young man is selling it; it was his Grandpa's ride. What do you think? Is it worth the risk on the first year fuel injection? Also, I don't know if this is an 883 or a 1200. He didn't say in the online ad and I am new to HD so I don't know what visual cues would tell me if the bike is the smaller or larger engine. It does have a stock peanut tank, if that means anything. It also was left alone with mid controls, so that is a plus for me. I don't like forward controls.
I had the pleasure of using an Oliver tractor at a place i used to work. I was kind of fond of it. I think you did well on the price, especially with the tires. My son has done well this year hunting our property. Havnt shot my saa for some time. Might have to get them out come spring. I missed a few videos, ive been really sick for some time, still not 100% getting there. Fair amount of land for sale around me. Good video.
reaping wut u hav sewn iz rewarding af!! 🖖🌝🖖
Congrats on becoming the new proud owner of that fine Oliver! They don't make'em like that anymore. When I see the area you are in, it reminds me of my grandparents place out on the other side of Leslie. It used to be country as country could be. I haven't been back to their homeplace since grandma passed in 99. Houses were going up on their road like weeds in a garden. Loved the video and seeing that old iron on four wheels! Keep wrenching and stay safe!
Very cool
Thanks for sharing this! My wife and i have s similar dream of a large piece of land. We are currently on a little over 2 acres and we grow a bunch a food and have chickens. Whats nice is our property is basically surrounded on 3 sides by 450 acres of state forestry land so its nice and quiet! But i still just want a bigger piece thsts mine to shape the way i want! Cool tractor man! Looking forward to see how this project goes.
Haha! I just bought two chinese mini excavators at a Ritchie Bros. online auction, more machines!
Paul THAT IS AWESOME brother , I’m so happy for you bud 👌😁 I really dig your channel and videos no matter what they are 😊
old tractors are neet i have JI case & JD cloride ate your rims up HAPPY WRENCHING
what about the hornet 600f
I would buy a 2003 100th anniversary Sportster because I like the badging on the motor tank etc, and also the last year of the serviceable transmission trap door. I have owned two twin cam engines a 2005 dyna and a 2006 street glide the only thing I did not like was they ran very hot like a shovel. Currently I still own my 1986 FXST for over 30 years which I ride all the time and a 2017 Ultra Limited which is for me and my wife just for comfort on long rides. I am not a fan of shovels just because every body in their brother has worked on them usually the wrong people, I would have to get one that was all original non touched by shadetrees mechanics same goes for the Ironheads. I have owned two Ironheads a 1983 and a 1985 great bikes back when they were fairly new. One 1981 FLH which was a nightmare very unbalanced engine even after I tore it down and rebuilt it, The bearings spun in the case ruining the cases and broke a pinion shaft. Great video, Thanks
If Oliver that is the same company that made tractors also made chilled plows. Then I worked at the museum here in town of the Oliver family. It's quite the museum it's the house and everything is still there. It's called copshahome. And then there's the St Joe county valley museum that was built on the property of the house... I always like tractors I'm going to John Deere myself it's small but it's still a John Deere.
Yup same company, the chilled plow company was merged with several other companies in the 30s to become Oliver Farm Equipment and that's what they ran under until White bought them out. JDs are nice, but always more pricey, I looked at a few
@buttcrackcycles just up the street from me which reminded me was the last offices on highway 933 almost on the highway was the last offices of white farm equipment and I think the lettering is still on the building... The train tracks which used to run behind my house which is now a running trail and it goes all the way into course Notre Dame where they delivered coal and now Mishawaka through South bend but up in denials it was just a 100 ft or so from the last office of white equipment
@buttcrackcycles The only thing left of the Oliver factory and the manufacturing facility is the steam house which was converted including the huge chimney which says Oliver on it I think a company that sells bricks now has that as their showroom....
@buttcrackcycles I remember writing through when they were destroying or tearing down the old buildings it's like Studebaker here in town I ride my motorcycle through there until they yell at me and tell me to get out of there. But I remember writing through the the boiler house at Oliver it was one big door at one end and one big door at the other end that time the boilers were still in there
should your front tires on the truck have some tread in the middle? I'm guessing they should.
@@forsaken1776 blew a brand new tire out on the interstate not long ago(Chevy in front of me lost the entire rotor, ball joint etc and I ran it over) and that's what I had for a spare. I've got two new tires on dually wheels to put on, just need to find the time to swap front hubs!
@@buttcrackcycles I figured you knew just in case I had to say it. not trying to be a troll or anything like that.
I think you did great, I always wanted a Oliver row crop 88 because I like the look of the sheet metal sides cool as hell. I think they had a 66, 77 super, and a 88 that looked similar. Great video, Thanks
@@robertjones7792 thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Commenting for support! Keep the killer vids comin'!
“The hipster crowd” lmao we’re talking about motorcycles, Harleys a that… chopping, bobbing, customizing and trying to look cool has been part of the culture since day 1.
What a heap of junk 😂
XLS
Just buy a better motorcycle.
Great job on your paint job on your tank.
Now try it in freezing temperatures.
Good take man
Nose cone Shovel. Don't make 'em any prettier.
The best Harley for being reliable is the 883. It runs cool, quiet and has lower shake with the rubbers.not a highway bike but a local cruiser that looks good💪
Are you using points or Dyna ignition?
I remember those days well Can be hard on the ankles
Man, that mess of wiring put my anxiety up a level
I've gotten old, infirm, and like some creature comforts on my bike. Hence at 66, I'm on a BMW 1250 GS that fits my 6'5" frame nicely, and with some comfort. The older your get, the more pains you get, too. So trying to keep the knees and lower back not hurting on rides is kind of nice. Getting a motel room, a hot shower, and a bed is nicer too, compared to camping, these days. Do what feels comfortable to you, and what you can afford. There's a price point and a budget somewhere, for everyone that wants to ride where they are going and staying. Yes, my GS is a bagger, when I want to put the quick removable Vario cases on, or take them off. Flip a lever, and they're on, pull a lever and they are off. With very nice luggage type handles to carry them, too, into your room.
The whole time I was thinking points adjustment and / or timing issue. I did away with electronic ignition. My experience is that it WILL eventually go bad. Heat is electronics worst enemy. On a trip from Texas to Ohio I got stuck in West Memphis with bad ignition module. Had a points replacement drop shipped to me.
Bro, stand the bike up straight, use a plumb bob, drop it to the floor from the center of what you're measuring and mark it on the floor and you'll get an accurate measurement. RULE OF THUMB...........If you ride an Ironhead daily, Locktite will be your best friend. I've never had as many issues with my XLCH as you've mentioned. LOL. And that damned needle retainer..........Can't count how many I lost. Learned to have a magnet in hand when I take any carb apart.
Im retired and I work fulltime. Why? To support my four dependents who reside in my garage. There is another one on the way sometime in the coming year.
i made my chopper out of a mint sportster that an old hot rod guy got for his wife....thank buddha he thought she could ride a 1200...only in north america does anyone think that an 800 cc moto is small...in central america 90% of bike are under 250cc and are more than enough to commute and crush long trips ... the tractor cult is hilarous ...why do you need 1500cc for a bike that never makes it to 4th gear?...bragging rights mostly
Cool! I’ll send a some pics of my bike in 😁
Don't apologise. Your content is always interesting. And would love to see your day job as a diesel fitter. I've been around that stuff all my life in one way or another. Cheers from down under Stan.
Every bike I've owned has had a big old process to getting it started. Each one was unique, too. Except my shadow, but we'll see after a few years.
