  • Hi again all! Sitting in my workroom I am trying to think of things that may be challenging to record, and also interesting to listen to. I came up with the idea of recording some standard tuba excerpts WITH the recordings that I grew up with. These recordings inspired me, and kept me in the practice room for many years (and still do). I always did this procedure to get into the FLOW of playing these pieces (when I wasn't in a great orchestra) so that when I arrived, it was "more" familiar. The challenges when I was 20 are here still that I am 53. Listening to, and re-listening to these recordings still amaze me of how GREAT these players were. Some of the best tuba playing ever-🙏
So... I have chosen a handful of them and In the next days, I will release a few of my favourites and see what happens. I hope that you enjoy and maybe some of you will also try 🙃
(Not as easy as you might think!! 😉 )
    Without further ado:
Fountains of Rome performed with OSM under Charles Dutoit (DECCA 1983) . Tuba: Ellis Wean
    (Pierre Beaudry Vivian Lee)🇨🇦

Doing my own prep work for an upcoming audition and listened to various excerpts on youtube and then YOU popped up in my feed with this awesome video! You sound fantastic and are a great inspiration for me as I do my own prep on this excerpt. Cheers, my friend!

Kids learning the instrument don’t know how good they have it these days with TH-cam. If I’d have had resources like this in the 90s, it would have made things much easier! We had to hunt down hard to find recordings or pay travel/lessons fees all across the country. Dave, well done and keep up this kind of work!

Thank you very much. The "trick" to getting better back in the day for me was to play along... to feel the groove "inside",,, I always found this beneficial. Even today! Technically we can all learn, but to play in the groove and sound profile of the orchestra... that's another skill.

Sorry to be a stickler for accurate data here..but the personnel footnote you included in this OSM recording is incorrect. Thus recording was in 1982 and the tuba player was indeed Ellis Wean, but the Bass Trombonist was Ted Griffith (his final recording before retiring) and Vivan Lee did not join the orchestra as 2nd Trombone until some years later. Peter Sullivan had her job then. Peter Sullivan became principal in 1990 and that's when Vivian joined

Very true. Thanks. I studied with Ted a little back in the day. I am not sure why I put Pierre and Vivian but it was possibly that I knew them the most in my time in Montreal. Cheers!

Yes, that is correct, Ted Griffith bass trombone (yes, his final moment in the chair, which was closed out with a loud "YIPEE" from him), Joseph Zuskin 2nd trombone and Stewart Taylor principal. Stewart went to Tel Aviv in '83. Pierre Beaudry starting during 83-84.

Maestro Dutoit and Montreal Symphony. A combination of a dream until they became woke and wanted him to leave.
