I am a writer finishing a book that is set in Libya in early 1800. Can someone help me on what kind of scarves Arab men would have worn in the region and what it was called?
As-salaamu Alaykum, Begin by ironing shemagh to remove all wrinkles. Then fold ironed shemagh in half to form a triangle. (Match ends so they are even.) Next fold shemagh into another smaller triangle. Then iron creases on all edges of the triangle. Now your shemagh is ready to wear. When placing shemagh on your head, be sure to pull both hanging sides slightly towards the front from in back so they are resting on your shoulders (I do this in the video.) By pulling the ends forward towards your shoulders, you avoid stretching out the creases you pressed into the shemagh. I hoped this helped. Thanks for watching and Jazak Allah Khair!
When praying you have to let go of the agal and only wear the shemagh, when praying 2 sides the tip of the shemagh must remain on the chest, not on the back.
the use of the shmagh style is only used when you are not praying, when the time for prayer arrives, you agal must be removed, I usually see people praying wearing shmagh, agal always put it down.

Because I've 3 colours which is the plain light khaki , plain black with tassels , and the traditional red and white with tassels
As-salaamu Alaykum, The shemagh or keffiyeh is worn many different ways across the Middle East and it is not necessary to wear with a thobe or any other particular clothing, for that matter. Just like the shemagh can be worn with or without an agal, it can be worn with a thobe, with a salwar kameez or even with a suit! Where I come from (Jordan) King Abdullah frequently wears his shemagh (with an agal) along with his suit. Old Jordanian men can be frequently seen sipping tea with friends wearing shemagh with and without agal along with western style jackets and pants. What is typically worn with a shemagh is probably more of a function of the climate, than it is of the culture. In the gulf states (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, etc.) the heat and humidity is extreme, therefore, a thobe would naturally be the choice of clothing as opposed to a hot suit jacket. I would say go ahead and wear your shemagh with what ever type of clothing you are most comfortable in. Thanks for watching & Jazak Allah Khair!
