Dare I say it on this channel? This is one of those rare instances where I like this version better than the original. Marko’s voice just shines like a diamond. ❤
For me they are on a par. The original has an incredible, melancholic and nostalgic feel to it, but as you say, Marko's vocals on this are spine chilling
Same here. Now Nightwish is my favorite band still touring and Pink Floyd is my favorite band no longer together. I usually play something from each band daily now.
@@don-o-seven1437 We have a family tradition to play The Beatles at Christmas time. Seeing the kids dancing around the tree to Twist and Shout is a joy to watch.
My Top 5 was always Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Fleetwood Mac and Iron Maiden. Nearly 2 years ago I discovered Nightwish (by accident, starting with Poet and the Pendulum at Wembley.... of all things) and I knew instantly I'd discovered something truly special that would be part of the rest of my life. I just feel gutted I didn't discover them in the 90s so that I could be part of the whole journey
This is a Tribute to PF....heavier NW style version...so awesome. Do more their own material...there is plenty and you can not fail cause all are good. They are not like somebody else...they are like Nightwish...genuine pioneers and leaders of this genre globally since 1996.
I'm shocked. This concert soon will be 20 years old and even at that moment this band was legendary in its genre. How could a music manager never heard about it I have no clue. Did he ever hear about Metallica?
Different era. I get the sense he's not 'in the game' as much anymore either. Plus, Nightwish still plays in small arenas in the US. Lacking international fame doesn't put them on the radar for these guys who've been around for a long time.
I've listened and seen this version probably a hundred times over the years and i still get chills when Empuu's second solo comes up and they just have all this passion in that song. And Marko's vocals go to a whole other level and Juka's drumming.. so good.
It reminds me of Disturbed doing Sound of Silence, where they take an amazing song and take it into the stratosphere. Adding the vocals in after Empuu's solo is next level. Add to it the occasion of that night with Tarja being imminently booted and it's so profound.
When you know the history of Nightwish and how this night would end, this performance becomes even more powerful, it was a band of brothers closing ranks and coming together in order to survive
I played the End of an Era DVD for someone who did not know what happened later until afterwards..and he even said you could tell something was not quite right at various points through the show....I noticed the same in 2012 when I saw them about a week before Anette's Departure
Nice reaction. The man with the horrible nail polish is Tuomas Holopainen. He is in fact the master mind of Nightwish who writes 95% of the music. Marko is not the singer who fronts the band. They have a female singer and what a singer she is. Floor Jansen is one of the best singers around, with incredible range and very versatile. I hope you continue your journey into their catalogue. They have great songs and all different but unmistakeably Nightwish. And one more thing.. as you might have noticed from this performance, these are all real musicians, they are better live than in the studio. Enjoy 🤘🏽
As someone who has been slightly obsessed with Nightwish since I first heard them in 2001, this song just blew me away! I had loved Marko's presence on stage, but this one song made me wish I could sing like him more than anything.
This is a tribute , but also has a lot of meanings for the band. As with everyone they were fans of Floyd but this song representing times past and the yearning comes into play as they were about to part ways with Tarja who they grew up as a band with. They had reached enough heights to become so popular in Finland that the Prime Minister was ask to comment on the break up. The original also had that dynamic but in reference to the past.
Your friend Chris is just the type of person WE LOVE to see get TURNED ON to Nightwish, do Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 with him , would love to see his reaction , cheers
Nightwish isn’t just another band! It’s a whole new world, an Empire and it has an army! The army is everywhere! People who haven’t heard of Nightwish are becoming rare! …..or they have been hibernating under a stone. Their lead singer Floor Jansen is known as the most versatile lady singer I’m the world of metal, with the looks of a Valkyrie warrior but the kindest heart of all.
@Irene Habes-Quené I have been a fan of Nightwish since Oceanborn, so 1998. We are simply fans, not an army. Kinda cringe to say you're part of an army...
I was lucky enough to see this live in Birmingham U.K. in a small venue at this time. I’m one of those who thinks that this improves upon the original, and mostly because of how much passion is behind it (itself a tribute to the original). Not sure if it’s true but I read the reason the drummer holds his head in his hands, and the reason Tuomas flicks his head to the left (looking at Empuu) is because the drummer had a migraine and Tuomas was telling him to check he was ok.
This version is from 2005 and i have listened to that version literally dozens of times since then and i still get goosebumps listening to it... It's just that good. Saw this for the first time in a movie theater, they showed the whole DVD across Germany before it came out.
Marco, the singer on this song, also does a Phantom of the Opera duet with their original singer, Tarja, in this same show! Highly recommend that one as well!
well..marco was the basist of the band..actual lead singer was changing costume at backstage at this moment i think..so yeah..pretty good basist vocals here 😁
@Kaamee Apina Pretty sure we all noticed his base guitar..... and yes, Tarja was changing to her new costume that also required changing of the mic and stand to match the colours of her new outfit.
Thank to Pink Floyd from all my heart ! i had the chance to work for them in 1994 as a local crew! A blast !! I was 22 years old. I will never forget these days with you! I worked for 10 years as a local crew for many bands but Pink Floyd is N°1 !

"Get in touch with me next week. We'll do another one" I sure hope he isn't expecting another PF tribute or cover. Few bands will dare to touch PF material - and rightly so - but those that do rarely do the material justice. Nightwish is a rare exception and even David Gilmour has praised this performance as the best PF cover he had ever seen.
This is why we listen to you. Can hear the song anytime but insider kniwledge is new. I loved the comment BIG presence. Yes they are! Also the understanding that this was not a cover but a tribute. Back for more? We will be here.
You own the original sheet music to The Wall?! That’s pretty damn cool! Tuomas and the band admire Pink Floyd and this was one of the songs that they often played while Tarja took a break for a costume change. Marko would sing a lot of different covers, but this was the one they did most often, as they considered it a tribute to the band.
The original High Hopes holds a lot of sentimental memories for me, so I wasn't sold on this interpretation at first. It has since grown on me. I'm a huge covers snob, and I admit it, but as many have pointed out, this isn't meant to be a cover, and I respect what they were going for.
I actually like this more than I do the original. Nightwish's version, to me, is more powerful and emotional. I love David Gilmore, but Marco hit it out of the park and the chorus is at another level.
It's not easy to "rebuild" a classic song, specially a Floyd one! High Hopes is so unique that it's hard to think of another way of doing it, yet Nightiwsh pulls out a stellar showing! One thing that I love about this performance is that, while it injects a lot of vocal power and distortion, the melancholic and eerie nature of the original song is still there, untouched, haunting you throughout the entire song. That's what makes me a BIG fan of Nightwish! Tuomas Holopainen is a genious, and this is one of his best works to date!

What a tribute to a brilliant Pink Floyd tune by Nightwish so much emotion and energy put into it. Jukka the brilliant drummer on this suffered from insomnia and migraines that is why you see him holding his head in the video. The Insomnia and migraines forced him to quit the band and just work behind the scenes in 2019, kai Hahto of Wintersun replaced him
Jukka did suffer those things, but what he did there by putting his elbows on the snare drum is a technique used to change the pitch of the drum sound. Part of why he was so brilliant.
Would be interesting if you had a roadie/worker on Broadway who had worked Phantom Of The Opera & show them the Nightwish version from this same concert (Ed Of An Era) & their original singer, Tarja
@@FromG2eminor Well, Sabaton was one of he opening bands on two of Nightwish's North American tours, so they had plenty of time to meet. @@machintelligence 😎 Yeah, that's cool. Can't say I'm a big fan though. Their songs sound a bit too much the same to me, and the lyrics... I'll shut up now.😊
Really enjoyed this reaction, especialy from two very experienced and knowledgeable insiders, whose work stretches as far back as Sinatra. Now that's impressive. Please do more reactions to Nightwish and the genius that is Tuomas (keyboards). Sabaton is also impressive, and well worth watching. Looking forward to them. Greetings from New Zealand.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes on that stage during this performance. This is the End of a Era concert, everyone on that stage has agreed to fire their lead singer, who is off stage right now, everyone know, except her, Tarja, the band is wracked by insomnia and flu, it is the end of a drama filled tour, it spawns a PR nightmare and currently they do not know if the band will ever perform again. Powerful emotional songs like Poet and the Pendulum, Master, Passion, Greed and Bye Bye Beautiful are going to be written to cope this the drama that is a result. Personally, the band was making a statement with this song choice..Keep at both Sabaton and Nightwish.
The split with Tarja gave birth to one of their best albums ever. Dark Passion Play is insanely good, from start to finish... I love how The Poet and the Pendulum is the musical representation of Tuomas' grief, as he once said himself that this song saved his mental health.
Start with 2013 live concert, at Wacken the hold concert will blow you away. Just pick a song all are good. Enjoy the ride, it's a dam good one. I am 71 and love nightwish. Got to hear their singer they got now.
Yes, in a few songs they pay homage to other bands as well. Definitely get him on to other songs ! Show him Floors vocal ability as well as other Marko songs. Marko won last seasons, Finlands Masked Singer ! The keyboardist Tuomas is the main composer, they play the Wacken festival, sell out Wembly arena…etc etc. AND they play with the London Philharmonic!! Floor is Dutch, so she doesn’t headbang-she does the Dutch windmill ! And Floor is married to Sabatons drummer 😊
This was their 25th Anniversary Tribute to Pink Floyd of the song. I think it was performed here in 2005, not sure when they first did it. Nightwish started in 1996 a group of kids right out of High School. Only Tuomas, Keyboardist, composer, arranger, & Emppu, guitarist are the only original members left. Now Marco, Bassist, singer here left last year. I hope he loves Floor! They were in the US last June, they always tour here, although with COVID had been a couple a years at least. Doubt they come next year, they are doing a new album next summer, so probably will be 2024.
For me Nightwish are one of a very small group that can cover other atrists work and not only bring something new and fresh but change the impact of the songs, as much as I love Pink Floyd and have since the 70s, I love Nightwish and this version of High Hopes, it is not a cover it is a true tribute to another great band, Marco brings a new energy to the song and Emppu does not try to sound like Dave Gilmour (the mistake most other make) Emppu is a very talented guitarist who plays what a song needs not just to show off.
As a long time (decades) Pink Floyd fan - I have to say that Nightwish is the premier high power symphonic metal band on the planet (IMO, of course). They are not new - been around for awhile, they're on their 3rd (or so) female lead vocal (not in this video). The first female lead (Tarja Turunan) is operatic. You won't (IMO) find a better symphonic metal band anywhere. And I agree with john, an outstanding tribute from one exceptional band to another equally exceptional band.
This is not a cover but a tribute to Pink Floyd. They have not tried to copy the original but to make it in the Nightwish vein. Except no female singer as Tarja was offstage changing costume. Tell your friend to start with the Wacken 2013 concert as it has the current and most versatile singer, Floor Jansen who's Dutch.
This was a treat! Adamson himself. I'm a big fan of both Nightwish and Pink Floyd. I was blasting (with headphones) Dark Side of the Moon in 70's, now it's more Nightwish but still. PF is still in my playlist.
Pick another for next week... Loved that. Also loved how his first gesture-reaction came on THAT shot of Tuomas staring from afar... I'm gonna sub. Thanks fro sharing. Big love from Spain
Certainly a faster pace than the original, it also brings a lot more energy, depth and passion. I'm always a bit wary hearing covers of the classics, they're usually good enough for a live show but don't hold a candle to the originals. Occasionally though, you find a cover which can shine brighter than the original, such as Johnny Cash singing Hurt, Disturbed's rendition of The Sound of Silence, and indeed this cover of High Hopes.
Greetings Chris and glad you liked this tribute to an incredible band , I seen the Division Bell concert and was blown away , when I was younger the movie The Wall blew my mind , hope to see you on another reaction to Nightwish 🤘🏼💥🤘🏼
This was very interesting😊 You forgot to tell Chris that Marko isn't actually their lead vocalist😅 that they actually have a female singer. During this concert, it was Tarja since this was from the End of an Era concert.
I would love to see you guys doing another Nightwish reaction together =)

Great reaction. Keep in mind that PF was a great influence on Nightwish as well and at this concert it had a special meaning. This was tha last concert of the world tour an after the show that fired tha original singer who was a childhood friend of the composer and keyboard player Thuomas. And another remarkable fact is that the drummer Jukka was having a bad migrain the entire show as he suffer from insomnia and had to leave the band in 2015 and be replaced by Kai Hahto.
If I remember correctly it was the 40th anniversary of dark side of the moon or some anniversary to do with Pink Floyd that motivated them to do that cover.

OMG! Incredible cover!!! 😮💖💖👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great, thanks
Funny that you found Nightwish by looking for a Sabaton song. Floor Jansen from Nightwish is married with Hannes Van Dahl, the drummer from Sabaton.
It was meant to be...lol
@@FromG2eminor Well, Sabaton was one of he opening bands on two of Nightwish's North American tours, so they had plenty of time to meet.
At the last concert of the second tour, when all of the bands came out on stage, Hannes appeared in one of Floor's stage costumes.

They share a hug about 40 seconds in.
@@machintelligence That's hilarious. Here's another one: th-cam.com/video/XGyhSmCmSVE/w-d-xo.html
They met during her 2014 tour with ReVamp, not Nightwish.
@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 Thanks. Sabaton is a cool band. At one of their Denver shows they asked for all of the teenage girls to stand up (there were only a few, it was mostly an older audience,) Joakim the threw his sunglasses to one of them for a souvenir.
@@machintelligence 😎
Yeah, that's cool.
I love so much this cover. Marko is awesome
What a loss that he left the band. Great performance.
It isn't the same anymore.
Woaaaa, what a guest you got to this reaction!!!
Doubt they come next year, they are doing a new album next summer, so probably will be 2024.
cool that he liked it!
Great having your friend on board.
Always chills hearing this one
As a long time (decades) Pink Floyd fan - I have to say that Nightwish is the premier high power symphonic metal band on the planet (IMO, of course).
They are not new - been around for awhile, they're on their 3rd (or so) female lead vocal (not in this video). The first female lead (Tarja Turunan) is operatic.
You won't (IMO) find a better symphonic metal band anywhere. And I agree with john, an outstanding tribute from one exceptional band to another equally exceptional band.
Is there anything better than this. Marko is awesome
I'd definitely been waiting for more!
What a fantastic version. From a life long Pink Floyd fanboy.
WOW!!!!!
When Gilmour goes to that gig in the sky, I hope the world will pay PROPER tribute, like this.
English is not Marco's first language which makes this even more impressive. Please correct if I am mistaken.
Marco is not the main singer in Nightwish and now he is not in band anymore. I love his singing and he was my favourite person in the band.
I just love this version
Waited so long for this reaction 😁 Happy to see it!
Now you will have to get your friend to check out more Nightwish, awesome with Floor Jansen 😀
Emppu the guitar wizard rules 🤘
Pink Floyd, foreve 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Автору ремпект🤘🤘🤘❤️❤️
It is complete natural (and common) for Pink Floyd fans to also be Nightwish fans.
I was apprehensive but they were different enough to be not just a copy but they made it their own. Impressed.
Greetings Chris and glad you liked this tribute to an incredible band , I seen the Division Bell concert and was blown away , when I was younger the movie The Wall blew my mind , hope to see you on another reaction to Nightwish 🤘🏼💥🤘🏼
HUGE Pink Floyd fan, but I have to say this is better than the PF version, which I know sounds like sacrilege....looking forward to Pop seeing Floor!!
Truly sad that Marco has retired - he was one of a kind….
Seems you’ve made another man fan of Nightwish!
next time as a colab, you two should do nightwish phantom of the opera with tarja on vocals as well
This was very interesting😊
You forgot to tell Chris that Marko isn't actually their lead vocalist😅 that they actually have a female singer. During this concert, it was Tarja since this was from the End of an Era concert.
Dude. . . .I so hope you get at least $1 per book. :) Love your reactions. Thank you and keep up the fun channel.
