    "If you're not different, you better have a low price." I admire the heck out of Pentax/Ricoh for recognizing this idea some time ago and sticking to what makes them different from other current camera makers and then expanding on it.

      When I got back into shooting film in my 30's 2013-2018 before I had to sell off all my stuff due to personal issues I stupidly bought a ton of film cameras and even the great Nikon F3. I even had a brand new in box Nikon FM3A that I paid 1000 for back in 2014...now forget it but the camera I enjoyed shooting 35mm film the most with was the basic K1000 with a 30mm 2.8 lens or a 50mm lens.

    I am delighted with my Pentax 17 and happy to hear the positivity and future outlook of film. The belief of people to buy the 17 was to see more models and they have given us the encouragement that more models will eventually hit the shelves. They are so proud of their achievements and the success of the 17, rightly so. Brave decision and faith in the consumer. Kudos to Pentax , film is no dead.

    Thank you for this interview. I came to Pentax through my dad, but the last few years I've come to admire their philosophy even more. Brands that create for end-users are often deemed niche, but they do gather strong, committed followings. Pentax is one of the few.

    Thanks Hashem, great interview. It is so good that Pentax is back in the film camera business. The best bit to hear is that they are enabling the knowledge to be passed on to a new generation of engineers and product designers. As an ex-Kodak Australasia person, I know how much knowledge went out the door when they closed Coburg let alone how much would have been made redundant at Rochester in the last 20 years

    This interview needs more distribution. I have seen the Pentax 17 in the shops, and I'd decided firmly against getting one because I'm a dyed jn the wool SLR user. But now I am starting to see the sense of this product, and I'm seriously considering getting one for my young adult daughter. It may not be what I would use, but it will definitely draw a younger generation into serious photography. Clearly, the top management of Pentax are very intelligent people and they understand the market perfectly. Good luck to them!

    Excellent interview, Hashem! Very good questions and you handled yourself well. Very professional. You were like a Sky News reporter! 2 things I learned: the cameras are assembled in Vietnam, and the camera is such a success they are racing to supply the cameras around the world. A good problem to have. I see them possibly making a full frame model based on the 17. Then maybe stretching the camera vertically to fit 120 film. It may take a few years but if demand is strong it may come to be. Great work Hashem!

    • @pushingfilm

    Great interview, Hashem. It made me feel more connected to the brand for a moment and even grew my interest in wanting to buy the new camera just for the sake of supporting their philosophy and approach to camera making. I think their media showings will be very beneficial for gaining more positive attention for the brand. It's going to be interesting to see if any other companies follow suit or not. I think you point of cameras hitting a ceiling is definitely valid, I've even found myself going back in time for my digital camera with a simpler point and shoots to capture a more fulfilling experience that's lost in more modern tech. Cameras in the modern sense, for me, just serve as a work tool, rather than a personal one for pleasure. Keep up the great work with the channel, and hope to catch up sometime soon 👍

    That was great, thank you. I think looking upward from below at an industry it always seems like everything in capialism is just about squeezing profits from wherever and whoever they can, and of course they illstarated how they have market-based needs for going forward, but this gave a human face to the Industry, and I think it gave me a little more confidence that this is not just a fly by night whim on their part to extract some portion of what they may see as a temporary trend. I think it gave you some confidence as well watching your response. I really hope that Analog, all over the creative world, continues to reassert itself as a viable, and important alternative.

      You are safe, that's extremely unlikely to happen. They would have to charge exorbitant prices for the camera and lenses due to the low demand there would be for a Pentax MF system. The demand for Pentax FF is already not great (unfortunately) and the demand for the more expensive and heavier MF system must be at least a magnitude lower.

    • @thebitterfig9903
      @thebitterfig9903 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Now I’m thinking: what if there was a 645 version of the Pentax 17? A “compact” with excellent handling and a crazy-good lens from the Pentax optical designers. Probably need autofocus, since scale focus with medium format depth of field gets trickier. I know there are some folks who want a 67 SLR, but a 645 compact is still going to have a massive negative, and if the lens is as sharp as Pentax has often done, I don’t think folks would be disappointed with the results.

    While the Pentax 17 and generally film project are great and I appreciate Pentax is doing it, I still hope that management will not abandon the best of Pentax, which was K1 and generally full frame DSLR. While I love unique lenses of Pentax, I also hope they will change their mind and add "heavy" lens to the DFA series as I still miss the 600mm focal length in the lineup. K1 deserves to have it's come back and hopefully a moment of glory. Now would be a great time to do that. Everyone switches to mirrorless. Let them do that and let's not look at what others are doing. I wish all the best for Pentax brand and DSLR in general.

    I would like to see a compact fully automatic point and shoot and of course an SLR.
    And as I mentioned before it would be great for the "second-hand-community" if Pentax went and reproduced some frequently needed spare parts for the many great existing cameras. They have got the plans and - even if the tools are long lost - with modern CNC production it couldn't be too much trouble to make them. The biggest advantage for Pentax would be that there still is a network of service centers that could immediately restart repairing the older models. My request had been declined because parts aren't available anymore. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. And people pay for that service. I got my camera repaired in the end somewhere else but without new spares it's just a matter of time before it breaks again.
    So Pentax people, if you read this, please remanufacture some needed spare parts. These are mostly plastic and rubber that degraded over time. Battery compartments. Gears. Maybe 3D printable.
    Many camera models have one or two parts that are the main reason the camera stops working.
    I'm still excited for the things that may come and I'm glad the 17 seems to sell well. (Even though it isn't quite my cup of tea and it's too expensive just to try it out in my eyes. Maybe it could be the base for a full frame model and the electronically moving lens appears like a preparation for autofocus. Maybe mass production will make it cheaper.)
    I would love to see all those things happen but I understand Pentax has to be careful and considerate about what they do so they don't kill the company accidentally.
    Good luck!

    Pentax 17 is a good thing for the market, where practically no new equipment has been made for years - except for Leicas and toy cameras. But - this is a product aimed to beginners, and as such, can offer very little to anyone more serious in film photography. Especially the lens with only a zone focusing system, with only f 3.5, and the fact the camera shoots half frame, are limiting this camera either as a curiosity, or as a someone' s first film camera.

    They should build a compact full frame camera like the Panasonic Lumix S9 with the video capabilites of the Fujifilm X-H2s. We could then finally use all our pentax lenses for video projects.

    • @Vlad0304UA
      @Vlad0304UA 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have been using a Pentax system for many years, but have only shot video a little bit. It was more convenient than using a smartphone, except for the manual focus control on a platform that was not adapted for this. But a smartphone immediately allows you to share the video on social media without having to deal with transcoding. The other way is professional, when you upload the video to a computer, add LUTs, edit scenes and use effects. All this is a different level than photo processing.
      If I understand the technical problems of video implementation correctly, it's not so much about the image processor as it is about the autofocus system. Modern cameras that are well adapted for video make autofocus instantaneous. You can even run across a field in the frame while staying in focus, which will be followed by the camera's corresponding electron-optical system.
      Since the sound is recorded by a microphone in the camera body itself, autofocus needs to be very quiet. And the last is image stabilisation, which can be implemented in a lens or in a moving sensor. I don't know which is better, but the stabiliser in the lens is probably better adapted to the lens design and every piece of optics. This will cost more and break the compatibility with your old lenses.
      As far as I remember my K-5, to focus in Live View mode, it drop the mirror and quickly focused with special sensors. The K-1 II tries to focus on the digital image, but it takes much longer if the lighting is low or the subject is low contrast.
      On the contrary, it seems to me that it is quite difficult to implement all the functionality for professional video. Sony or other manufacturers with many years of experience dominate the market. Another option for using Pentax optics is to create an adapter for something like the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera. But this is also a very risky experience, how many Pentax lens owners would want to buy a BMPCC 4K at the price of a K-1?
      There are too many questions that require other skills and knowledge. By the way, I liked the 360 cameras for travel recording, and Riсoh makes them as well. If everything you're interested in is happening at a distance of a couple of metres from the camera, you forget about all the problems when shooting. And when editing, you can bring into focus what happened behind you and what you didn't notice.

    Having spent my childhood in the late 70's and through the 80's, I saw all my toys turn from metal to plastic. Plastic, for me, is a dirty word. I _hate_ plastic. Sure it has it's place, but this the p17 reminds me of all my plastic broken irrepariable toys. Be different, use metal. Maybe this is a "prototype" and the next one will have a better focusing system and wont be made from crappy plastic. I must admit, I thought film was dead, after seeing a review of this camera, film is back baby! So I'm looking at older rangefinders (kiev, nikon s2), and maybe an olympus pen eed. :-) Thanks Pentax for getting me back into something interesting, I'm sorry I can't justify buying this one though, maybe the next one. Metal case, parts, please, build something that will _last_ and not break 2 weeks after the warranty runs out (like everyone else).
