I would add that Soviet political thought should not be ignored, especially Lenin's work on imperialism and financial capital and the philosophy of Evald Ilyenkov who was concerned precisely with the problem of advancing social relations after political rather than economic start, bringing back the Marxist humanist tradition. Actually, the whole revival of Marxist humanism in post-stalinist socialism is worth considering, especially the focus on all-developed personality. The other problem is that the view of decline of growth of the Soviet Union and technological development is oftentimes an argument based on ideological belief, rather than empirical facts, same goes for the uncritical use of the term totalitarian to describe all socialist states, throughout the whole period of socialism. But this is to be expected in the US. Brilliant overview of Marx's key theoretical contributions.
Great lecture professor! We're covering Marx this week within the context of post modern philosophy. This helped a lot since I prefer learn through channels of audio/visual . Thanks!
I've been enjoying your lectures very much, professor Thorsby. They have been a real eye-opener to the range of thought in political philosophy. I really appreciate what you've produced. I have (what I hope will be) a helpful note: At 58:00 in the video, you refer to an essay about the elaborate distribution of labor involved in producing a pencil. The essay titled "I, Pencil" was written by Leonard Read in 1958, and published in the December issue for FEE's publication "The Freeman" of that year. It is indeed ubiquitous and there is no doubt that this essay has escaped the lips of nearly every heavy-hitter in the world of economic liberty, so there's no shame in the misattribution. I'm curious when you might get around to uploading your lecture on Rousseau. I'm eagerly anticipating viewing it. Best regards.
Trigger The Rookie he did not refer to an essay, he specifically said a "lecture by Friedman." You can watch it by following this link th-cam.com/video/4ERbC7JyCfU/w-d-xo.html (idk why I'm replying to a 2 year old comment lol, lemme know if you see this)
The notion that there is no social mobility is utterly ridiculous. In the US, this country has processed tens of millions of destitute immigrants for at least 150 years and those people are not still languishing in poverty.
Hey Mark, I love your videos, but How can Christianity be dependent on Feudal social system, when it preceded Feudalism, and survived it? Thank you for contribution to humanity. Keep it coming.
Identical lectures....u deserve more views cuz this material is incredibly important
@Mark Thorsby any chance you have these notes/outline available for download? Fascinating study!
