But next to my vinyl collection that album cover looks terribly bad. So whenever I get the chance to obtain it, I always keep abstain myself from buying it. @@DanielBoonelight Actually, I just read a really good analysis of the composition and there are places in the melody where Thom omits the diatonic G# in favor of the G natural, which is the "blue note" of C#minor. There is also a place where the harmony relies on a G#7 chord (implying C# harmonic minor, and the C natural note is in the melody). It also changes in the outro to include Am and C chords, which the melody follows.... So yea, this requires both vocal and ear training chops to really sing faithfully as she does so well.

In terms of the task for a singer-the vocal range and ability to hear and recreate those accidentals remains complex and impressive, regardless of how the transcriber would write out the sheet music. That doesn't mean there wasn't, in practical terms, a key change. Analysis of what those accidentals mean in terms of composition, effect and performance is a separate, interpretive topic from how a transcriber would notate it. For the singer or the person, say, creating an improvised solo, knowing that for these bars we are really borrowing chords from this other key, via techniques like secondary dominants, tritone substitution, or chromatic movement-OR that the melody relies on phrases created from the blues scale that include the b5 against a specific chord; all of that is crucial to getting inside the music. I am complimenting this young and talented musician on her ability to HEAR all of that and recreate it in her vocal rendition of the song. It has a high degree of difficulty and sophistication. To me, a few accidentals in the melody is one thing (and even then those accidentals usually work because they flirt with an implied shift in tonality)-but sections in which chords that are not diatonic to the original key are used in a repeated pattern along with a new melody which matches that, is a key change by any other name. For a singer, being able to hear how those melody notes transition between two different scales, and reproduce that faithfully requires a certain level of skill that indicates both talent and discipline. It's one reason perhaps why you don't see a lot of people covering bands like Radiohead. It requires elite chops. We good?
