1979 is a totally different vibe, went in the more electronic direction that Billy wanted to go in after Mellon Collie. It's not my favorite sound of theirs...I live for the excruciatingly distorted heavy ass guitars juxtaposed against Billy's childlike, bratty voice. Pure magic.

Pumpkins are contemporaries of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, that whole early 90s alt rock scene. I don't know that I would call them grunge because that term is kind of contrived, but this is totally of that same era.

Nice! Bullet with Butterfly Wings was my introduction to Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alt rock in general. Not sure if its super representative of the Pumpkin's catalog - it's a lot heavier than some of their other stuff - but that's OK... it certainly makes an impression. 90s classic! Definitely go Cherub Rock next, then follow up with Today, 1979 and Tonight Tonight.
Edit: the Genre is Alternative Rock... the Pumpkins were Grunge adjacent/contemporary, though I doubt anybody would consider them grunge itself. Their stuff got played back to back on the radio with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Offspring. (Speaking of which... any chance I can get you to check out The Offspring - Come Out and Play? Or Self Esteem?)

Been waiting for you to find Billy! First three albums are their best for me, Siamese Dream is in my top 3 albums of all time. They were around when Grunge was about but never quite fitted in to any specific genre. Some of their slower ones are the most beautiful , see ‘Mayonaise’ ❤

I envy you. Most of us have been listening to SP for over 20 years. You come in and hear one of their best songs for the first time and are amazed by it. It reminds me of my reaction when I first heard it and it makes me appreciate the song even more.

"Bodies" and "Zero" are Smashing Pumpkins deep cuts that always gets overlooked. Based on your tastes, I think you'd absolutely love them and I HIGHLY recommend them as your next SP listen. Also...a lot of reactors hearing SP for the fist the first time grip about Billy's voice. The fact that you enjoy it...yeah, you're about to enjoy a DEEP rabbit hole.

PLEASE do 1979, To Forgive, Today, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight!!
(Btw if you plan on doing more Metallica please react to The God That Failed if you haven't already, it's a super underrated song on the black album. But before you do just do some quick background research about the lyrics, it's about James's mother)

@@samsgirl7821 Same here, unfortunately people rarely react to any of their music. They are the most underrated nu metal band. I've been spamming hed p.e. - Pac Bell every time mollyboytv goes live but he hasn't bothered putting it on his list. Everyone else got their song request on his list though. Both you and I know that once he hears this song he'll be asking for more hed p.e. song suggestions to react to.

Cherub Rock is my favourite followed by Zero, Tonight tonight, Today, 1979 , oh and you have to listen to Ava Adore. Good luck , it’s some rabbit hole to go down 😉

Alright dude, I was worried that you wouldn't like Billy's voice but I was surprised. They're something like alternative rock, grunge adjacent. Mellon Collie was a complete masterpiece, one of the absolute best rock albums ever made, like top 10 or top 20 in my opinion. And Billy was one of the few rockers of that age that can actually play guitar. Most other alternative rockers after grunge didn't bother to solo or didn't have the talent to. Billy's a musical genius.

I love the Pumpkins, and I was an early adopter- got their first album on cassette beginning of 1992, and loved it. They didn't get famous for a couple years, but Gish still my favorite album of theirs. However, this song is terrible (comparatively) and might be most overrated ever. Every other hit of theirs is at least better, with some verging on fully magical.

You've got so much to dig through with Smashing Pumpkins! Released possibly some of the greatest albums of the 1990s and definitely the greatest double album of the last 30 years - Melon Collie & The Infinite Sadness. Their music is so diverse - super heavy distorted guitars through to beautiful and delicate orchestral / acoustic pieces. Cherub Rock, Today, Hummer, Soma, Geek USA, Disarm, Silverf*uck, XYU, An Ode to No One, Muzzle, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, Galapogos, I am One, Snail, Mayonnaise. Go for your life!
