Goaltender and defense is an all you can eat buffet, but offense gets tricky. I did the exercise on capfriendly thorougly by acting as GM for each team, by protecting my best element now and down the future, while also respecting the rule of letting 2 offense players available under contract in 2022 and 1 def available under contract for 2022 and then proceded to draft myself as a Seattle GM. Here is a decent result.

I’m really rooting for Seattle as a Canucks fan. A competitive team in the Pacific Northwest would be great. They instantly would become my second favourite team, especially if Ronnie Francis, who I remember was a pretty amazing, unsung player in the 90s, ices a good team. If I were them, I’d jump at Jonah Gadjovich on the Canucks. He could be a steal of the expansion draft, a top 6 winger and a PP net front presence. Holtby still is a dark horse if Seattle needs to get to the cap floor.

THG is actually right about Vegas, them not being included in the Seattle Draft doesn't change the team at all and is probably one of the team that would have suffered the less in this draft.
Here an obvious protection list if Vegas would have been included...
    Stone
    Pacioretty
    Karlsson
    Marchessault
    Smith
    Tuch
    Stephenson
Unprotected offense player with a contract in 2022 : Reaves, Carrier, Roy, Kolesar
    Pietrangelo
    Theodore
    Hague
Unprotected defense player with a contract in 2022 : Mcnabb, Whitecloud
    Lehner
    Fleury unprotected
If any of those guys leave tomorrow, Vegas is still a contending team. Fleury would never be picked, probably Mcnabb or Whitecloud gets taken, but one of them leaving allows you to resign Martinez....

So, in theory, couldn't Seattle make handshake deals with unprotected UFAs, not pick them and, in a sense, take 2 players from a team?

    • @mattbrumback9546
      @mattbrumback9546 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I read some news yesterday day that the kraken have a 3 day early access to talk to to UFAs before the rest of the league and if they agree to a deal it will count as a selection from said team, this prevents Seattle from essentially grabbing to pivotal players from certain teams.

I'd be shocked if attendance is ever an issue for Seattle. That city makes a ton of sense for the NHL, and you can instantly market a border rivalry with Vancouver to gain interest. This is as big of a no-brainer as it gets for the NHL.

But what bothers me is that
1.) it's called just Pro experience and not called North American or NHL/AHL experience or whatever - which says that European hockey is not "pro"
& 2.) that the Expansion Draft isn't the only time/thing/whatever where the NHL "downgrades" European hockey - just hear to or look at career stats where it's like "oh he has 1.000 pro games to his account" but before coming to the NHL he has like 150 KHL games or so (and who would say that Romanov or Ovechkin didn't play at a Pro level in Russia)
