The really weird part about the Rauffen story is we realize he and Rozemyne are actually on the same page about the whole curriculum and they may be the only people at the academy who have recognized the problem.
I think they're basing the fact that the graduates have gotten worse on the fact that the worst of them came from the temple. They're blind to the fact that they're all bad because the big event was caused by a temple kid.

The "problems" are work for the good of the duchy. As Lestilaut said, Rozemyne is a great asset who managed to make connections to royalty and spread trends despite being from a middle duchy. But it comes with a lot of work to manage. Its Wilfred and his clowns who see this immense boon as "problems" or "trouble" because Wilfreds main goal in life is to do as little work as possible and his interduchy policy is: bow to the greater duchies and keep your mouth shut. If Wilfred was in charge of spreading the trends, he would give up all rights to them to the first greater duchy that expressed their interrest.
the funny thing is Hannelore doesn't have bad timing, not really. It's good timing that feels like bad timing in the moment. It's her "bad timing" that allows her to become book besties with Rozemyne mutters about ditter put Dunk on Roz's radar, wanting to meet Roz lead to going to library a bunch which Solange tells JustusGudrun who tells Roz, mistaking Hannelore as a fellow bookworm she truly has the Goddess of Time's protection
Yeah, her "bad timing" is when you compare what happens to what she had planned to do. But the end results she gets from that "bad timing" is (so far) always better than what she would have gotten if she had done what she had planned to do. PS: the "(so far)" is not an implied change in the future, it's just that I am a LN reader and therefore don't know if it will or not continue till the end ^^

Ahrensbach behaves as if Ehrenfest was their vassal and have worked from years to make Ehrenfest's Archducal family believes that it's normal, but it isn't. That's a consequence of Ehrenfest's overall isolationism and led to a vicious circle of auto-alimented low profile. That's pretty important to understand, otherwise it's easy to wrongly take Rozemyne's guardians views of her interduchy's socializing at face value, when they are, overall, those who're wrong. In other words, as far as interduchy's politics goes, Ehrenfest is incredibly bad and overall unable to correct itself since its higher-ups are badly educated in this matter and don't really understand that there is a problem or even how their own political system really works. Interduchy wise, Sylvester doesn't behave like an Aub, but like a Giebe, but it's hard to grasp since Ferdinand, while rumored for being pretty objective, is incredibly biased when it comes to his beloved half-brother.

Wilfred being unprepared and clueless is making Rozemyne retainers doing things for him, which is not supposed to be their work. It should be done by his own retainers. He see that as something normal(Veronica teaching at its best) an Oswald is even supporting him in that. But for Rozemyne retainers this is clear tyrany. They are not his retainers and helping him doesnt suppose to mean replacing his own people. So they just use it for teaching Philline because she is their weakes link. This on the other hand piss Wilfred because they are not as usefull as he is expecting. So both parties doesnt like each other This whole interaction especially interesting because we never saw how Veronica ruled country. We only hear few things she done so question is how its possible she has so many supporters. Now we can see that on smaller scale. Wilfred is so nice to his retainers he doesnt even expect them to fullfill their duties. Instead he just throw it on some else. This in long run would create big rift between them. One side see nice good well meaning ruler, other tyran. And both are right. And all of this beceause of one clueless leader who doesnt think much about his actions. Its acually kinda scary.

But u're totally right, and if it wasn't for the plot to be plotin' i would've loved Wilfried to get a REAL wake up call with no big sis' Rozy cleaning up / helping him stand back up. But i like that's he doesnt overcome his weakest part in 2 years. His conditioned behavior + character would take a lot of time to overcome AND no one really helps him (i mean Florencia is "trying" but damn adults are as useful as him sometimes)
Wilfred and his attendants are so used to Veronica's methods that they can't tell when they're being rude. Even when it's so obvious a commoner can spot it. In Part 2 vol 1 Ferdinand orders Fran to learn how to monitor Myne's health. Myne points out to Fran that if Ferdinand truly didn't still see him as his attendant that such an action would be unthinkably rude. Even if he's the half brother if the Archduke and she's a commoner shrine maiden it is considered rude and inappropriate behavior on Ferdinand's part. The fact that Wilfred and his attendants don't see that and they feel it's appropriate to give orders to other people's attendants shows how much Veronica's tyrannical ways still affect them.
I absolutely loved the Traugott story. That chilling scene where he finally starts to realize his mistake, and Justus nearly freaking kills him was absolutely horrifyingly tense. That illistration of Justus pinning Traugott and the murders intent in his eyes was absolutely something else, and I was crawling with goosebumps when I saw it. Seeing how much Justus cares about his mother gave a whole new dimension to his character that I hadn't seen before. We had gotten pieces of their relationship in other places, such as their short story at the end of Part 4, but this really painted a whole new picture. I loved how the first time he choked Taugott was just to teach him a lesson about how bad he messed up, but the moment Traugott compared himself to Rihyarda about getting a new lord, damaging her name, THAT is when Justus goes in to almost try and kill him. Just shows how much he cares about his mother, that he is willing to kill someone for hurting her, and besmirching her name and hard work.
I love this story, Traugott getting the boot just isn't satisfying enough on its own. Sure, we know Rozemyne successfully crushed his hopes and dreams, but it's just more fulfilling to watch the realization of exactly what the hell he did finally dawn on him.

The academy is not ready for Rozemyne. No matter how much experience she's gained due to retaining her memories back from her previous life, she's still impulsive about everything she does.
I am so glad that J-Novel is also translating the side story books and that you are covering them. While they aren't strictly necessary for the main story, they are a treasure throve for background information on the world and help to contextualize how Rozemyne's actions affects the world around her in ways she doesn't even realize. With everything except prologues, epilogues and those few side-stories at the end of volumes, there's only so much room for other people to open up our view beyond Rozemyne's horizon, so having the side stories is really nice for people who want to immerse themselves into the world, rather than just follow the story.
I really loved this filler book. It added a lot of context and showed what key figures were thinking at the time. I particularly liked the information with Traugott, and how long it took him to realize - more like beaten into his skull - how badly he fucked up. It also revealed that Justus has a bit of a sadistic side to him. This side of Justus did poke it's head out in P3V3 with the execution of the Hasse traitors, but, to my mind, I figure that Justus was just more interested in seeing the rare magic being performed. Now... I'm not so sure. Now I'm wondering if this was a case where he could see rare magic AND see people suffer.
Justus wasn't sadistic, he was professional ; he should teach some sense to Traugott and that's exactly what he did, the most efficiently possible in a pretty short amount of time, that's not as if he had half-a-year to babysit Traugott's brain, all he had was a bit of time per day for a few days. Traugott is a knight, if he can't handle a little beating, he's already as good as dead, so... We saw here that Justus knows Lady Rozemyne pretty well and rightly deduced her full intentions, if he was sadistic, all he had to do was letting Traugott to wallow in his delusions ( it's clear that he understands very well that if Traugott should try to ask Rozemyne about becoming her retainer anew, she wouldn't bother to save him from her retainers, the boy had already disappeared from her universe completely ), but he accurately and efficiently explicated everything to his dumb nephew... All in all, Justus handled all that pretty well. Of course he needed to frighten Traugott since his nephew is... well, who he is, but even when angered by the sheer stupidity of this boy and how insulting he was towards his grandmother, he remained collected enough and didn't really use more force than necessary. Sure, Traugott passed out, which was efficient in itself, since he was a waste of time at this moment, but that level of violence is way into the limits of the acceptable, that was nothing that a mere rejuvenation potion couldn't have solved in a few minutes.

Myne explained how screwed he was to the other retainers after Trougot left the room when he resigned. It just took this long for him to realize it himself. I have no sympathy for him. In my book he's only a step up from Shikikoza, and that guy got killed.

Great choice to cover these side stories! I've finished the webnovel but actually havent gotten to reading the Royal Academy Stories for some reason. It's fun to see the foreshadowing in these earlier parts, especially the Hartmut scenes about Rozemyne's retainers (and Clarissa too!).
I've listened to this playlist 3 times now and I only have one conclusion. Every fuck up Rosemyne does is Ferdinands fault. He expects Rosemyne to understand everything about the Nobility and on top of that expects her to behave accordingly.Yet he deliberatly with holds critical information from her that someone like her must not only know but understand. I get that the guy is busy and stuff but he is a prime example of a shitty teacher who simply doens't bother to teach and blames his students for their inability to do what he expects of them. He has Rosemyne learning so much stuff yet teaching her about the complex relationships between the nobility and the consequences of such relstionships seem to be something that should have been downloaded to Rosemynes brain from the cloud or something.

Loved the shorts my favorite being when tragut nearly gets killed by the same man he deemed beneath his notice at the beginning on the chapter... making him realize he isn't nearly as strong or as important as he thought he was.
You see his real problem in the Cornelius chapter: nobody actually talked to him about his actual wants and responsibilities. Had he just was a guard for Wilfried would have still have gotten the mana compression and Wilfried would never have known or cared about him disobeying RM. Everyone, including himself, instead made assumptions.
Just fished the anime and divided to do a little spoiling. I hope one day she will be able to call her family her family again, even though I’m tired of the OP isakai, this is one time I wish she was really OP, I get it I like the story but dam I hate watching her getting pushed around ripped from her family. The anime was a 9/10 for me but dam did it leave a bad taste, I’m sure they are gonna be pushing her around some more as a noble too. Time to go watch something with a happy ending.

I love seeing the appreciation of Angelica as a person because this short story really sold me of her inner character and how Rosemyne and those of the temple are some of the only people that seem to have ever praised her. Makes you wonder if nobles have any understanding of what positive reinforcement is Angelica's family apparently has not and bootlicking of the Veronica camp does not count since praise without merit reinforces nothing but bad habits, more on that later. Can not agree with your take more about Adolphine and empathizing with Ortwin on how she has been treated as a second place prize that has not been even given the courtesy of official courtship let alone courting based on feelings of romance. The confrontation between Traugott and Justus is especially interesting and grows more understandable the more you think about what Justus values. Top three with everything quite a bit below except maybe his collection hobby is Ferdinand, Rihyarda, and Rozemyne. Ferdinand is his one and only lord he serves, Rihyarda is not only his mother but a role model of how to serve your lord or lady, and Rozemyne while starting out as a curiosity has taken actions to improve Ferdinand's quality of life in ways that no one ever has. Considering we found out that Justus's opinion of Rozemyne goes up after this incident specifically at the end of Part 4 Volume 3 if this interaction between Traugott and Justus would have occurred later Traugott might be a cripple or worse. Something slightly eluded to in the video and discussed a little by others here in the comments is Oswald and his what I would describe as criminal negligence and dereliction of duty in regards to his service of Wilfred. As an up to date light novel reader my opinion of him has been steadily progressed downward. He does not make a good first impression but it appears he learns from his mistake until you get the side story from Lamprecht's POV in Part 3. Oswald fears Rosemyne "stealing" the position of Aub while he is not the only person with this view as the head attendant like Rihyarda for Rosemyne his philosophy is what will be filtered down to the apprentices. The man has almost no consideration for merit and thinks primarily on terms of status. The man is 30 when introduced let no one pretend he does not understand the family tree shenanigans that Elvira explained and knows full well why the factions politics are in their current state. He has Wilfred's weakness for not pushing himself if not pushed by an external force but is without Wilfred's good qualities such as sincerity. His natural form of bootlicker stifles Wilfred's potential growth and certainly his understanding of the forces and intentions of those around him that are not as straightforward with him as Rosemyne or Ferdinand. I fear for what Wilfred is going to have to go through if he wants to reach Rosemyne's level of understanding of noble society, Charlotte's level may be permanently out of reach because she has drive and will continually improve.
If Angelica failed as a Guard Knight by walking off in the middle of protecting Rozemyne from Ferdinand, what does that say about Damuel who never even drew his weapon? Come on Damuel, protect your lady for the dangerous psychopath.
I definitely feel sorry for Hannelore, because there's so much happening around her that she constantly just has to deal with being dragged along with. I seriously hope that down the road, she manages to fight her way outside of the currents that Rozemyne and Lestilaut are constantly buffeting her with. She deserves so much more and is too precious to just let her become another piece in the machinations of those two, whether they're aware of it or not.

I change them as my collection grows. The top shelf currently is I'm in Love with the Villainess, Bookworm, and Made in Abyss. The second shelf has Uzumaki, Goblin Slayer, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Adachi and Shimamura, and the shelf below that has various other books and manga that have come into my possession. I have the first volumes of Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, and some one off books like Three Days of Happiness, I Had That Same Dream Again. My lowest shelf has Overlord because they're hard cover and were getting so heavy it was breaking down the cheap shelf I have.

The difference is she really doesn't want to win... though feels she had too for her own personal reason rather than for a group achievement. She is mainly focused on herself and her desires for the most of her first school year unlike Harry who just wanted to fit in... not look like a weirdo and if he got bonus points for his house awesome... the difference is in being active or reactive.

Aub Dunkelfelger's first illustration in the novel is in P5V7. As for the illustration used here, I could not find it, so I assume it comes from Fanbook 6 or 7.
Hmm... Do they ever specify the stepiing stones between commoner, lay noble, mid noble and arch noble in amount of mana? Like transformm a fey stonen is minimum for x and needinng x amount of bars on the "power meeasssurer" at the temple etc?
It seems to be less of a specific figure of having x mana, and more relative level of mana compared to others in the duchy. The Klassenburg candidate said Rosemain could be a second wife if she could match his mana level. Then Ferninand was noted as being incompatible with the other archnobles from Erhenfest, but matching higher rank duchies. This would also explain why Mana compression is kept as a family secret, because the family method would be one way of ensuring that they stay at a top rank .

In Part 2 vol 1 Ferdinand orders Fran to learn how to monitor Myne's health. Myne points out to Fran that if Ferdinand truly didn't still see him as his attendant that such an action would be unthinkably rude. Even if he's the half brother if the Archduke and she's a commoner shrine maiden it is considered rude and inappropriate behavior on Ferdinand's part. The fact that Wilfred and his attendants don't see that and they feel it's appropriate to give orders to other people's attendants shows how much Veronica's tyrannical ways still affect them.
I absolutely loved the Traugott story. That chilling scene where he finally starts to realize his mistake, and Justus nearly freaking kills him was absolutely horrifyingly tense. That illistration of Justus pinning Traugott and the murders intent in his eyes was absolutely something else, and I was crawling with goosebumps when I saw it. Seeing how much Justus cares about his mother gave a whole new dimension to his character that I hadn't seen before. We had gotten pieces of their relationship in other places, such as their short story at the end of Part 4, but this really painted a whole new picture. I loved how the first time he choked Taugott was just to teach him a lesson about how bad he messed up, but the moment Traugott compared himself to Rihyarda about getting a new lord, damaging her name, THAT is when Justus goes in to almost try and kill him. Just shows how much he cares about his mother, that he is willing to kill someone for hurting her, and besmirching her name and hard work.
I love this story, Traugott getting the boot just isn't satisfying enough on its own. Sure, we know Rozemyne successfully crushed his hopes and dreams, but it's just more fulfilling to watch the realization of exactly what the hell he did finally dawn on him.

No matter how much experience she's gained due to retaining her memories back from her previous life, she's still impulsive about everything she does.
I am so glad that J-Novel is also translating the side story books and that you are covering them.
While they aren't strictly necessary for the main story, they are a treasure throve for background information on the world and help to contextualize how Rozemyne's actions affects the world around her in ways she doesn't even realize. With everything except prologues, epilogues and those few side-stories at the end of volumes, there's only so much room for other people to open up our view beyond Rozemyne's horizon, so having the side stories is really nice for people who want to immerse themselves into the world, rather than just follow the story.
It wouldn't surprise me if every knight in Dunkelfelger talked about ditter in their sleep. Also, Hannelore is great.

I really loved this filler book. It added a lot of context and showed what key figures were thinking at the time. I particularly liked the information with Traugott, and how long it took him to realize - more like beaten into his skull - how badly he fucked up. It also revealed that Justus has a bit of a sadistic side to him. This side of Justus did poke it's head out in P3V3 with the execution of the Hasse traitors, but, to my mind, I figure that Justus was just more interested in seeing the rare magic being performed. Now... I'm not so sure. Now I'm wondering if this was a case where he could see rare magic AND see people suffer.
Justus wasn't sadistic, he was professional ; he should teach some sense to Traugott and that's exactly what he did, the most efficiently possible in a pretty short amount of time, that's not as if he had half-a-year to babysit Traugott's brain, all he had was a bit of time per day for a few days. Traugott is a knight, if he can't handle a little beating, he's already as good as dead, so... We saw here that Justus knows Lady Rozemyne pretty well and rightly deduced her full intentions, if he was sadistic, all he had to do was letting Traugott to wallow in his delusions ( it's clear that he understands very well that if Traugott should try to ask Rozemyne about becoming her retainer anew, she wouldn't bother to save him from her retainers, the boy had already disappeared from her universe completely ), but he accurately and efficiently explicated everything to his dumb nephew... All in all, Justus handled all that pretty well. Of course he needed to frighten Traugott since his nephew is... well, who he is, but even when angered by the sheer stupidity of this boy and how insulting he was towards his grandmother, he remained collected enough and didn't really use more force than necessary. Sure, Traugott passed out, which was efficient in itself, since he was a waste of time at this moment, but that level of violence is way into the limits of the acceptable, that was nothing that a mere rejuvenation potion couldn't have solved in a few minutes.
@@gerardmanvussa501 Traugott is not only delusional, he also only respects raw martial power. At the beginning, he has no respect for Justus, that only changes after Justus chokes him out. His respect for Myne is still nowhere to be seen, though.
47:30 also the fact that he can not become a knight commander because first he is not related to the archducal family and second he fucked up and ruined his reputation is plain hilarious to see... ISTG Justus wasn't playing he totally destroyed him physically and mentally haha...

Well, he is related to the archducal family, after all he is Sylvester's uncle's grandchild. But that relation is too distant to enable him to be Knight Commander without serving, of course.
Myne explained how screwed he was to the other retainers after Trougot left the room when he resigned. It just took this long for him to realize it himself. I have no sympathy for him. In my book he's only a step up from Shikikoza, and that guy got killed.

I've been waiting for the illustration of Justus making Traugott his bitch to show up in a video. It is definitely one of my favorite illustrations in the entire series. Justus is such a good character.
I really should re-read this book now that we're on part 5. I'm sure there is tons of stuff I didn't get on my first reading now that the story line has advanced.

Great choice to cover these side stories! I've finished the webnovel but actually havent gotten to reading the Royal Academy Stories for some reason. It's fun to see the foreshadowing in these earlier parts, especially the Hartmut scenes about Rozemyne's retainers (and Clarissa too!).
I've listened to this playlist 3 times now and I only have one conclusion. Every fuck up Rosemyne does is Ferdinands fault.
He expects Rosemyne to understand everything about the Nobility and on top of that expects her to behave accordingly.Yet he deliberatly with holds critical information from her that someone like her must not only know but understand. I get that the guy is busy and stuff but he is a prime example of a shitty teacher who simply doens't bother to teach and blames his students for their inability to do what he expects of them.
He has Rosemyne learning so much stuff yet teaching her about the complex relationships between the nobility and the consequences of such relstionships seem to be something that should have been downloaded to Rosemynes brain from the cloud or something.

You see his real problem in the Cornelius chapter: nobody actually talked to him about his actual wants and responsibilities. Had he just was a guard for Wilfried would have still have gotten the mana compression and Wilfried would never have known or cared about him disobeying RM. Everyone, including himself, instead made assumptions.

I hope one day she will be able to call her family her family again, even though I’m tired of the OP isakai, this is one time I wish she was really OP, I get it I like the story but dam I hate watching her getting pushed around ripped from her family.
The anime was a 9/10 for me but dam did it leave a bad taste, I’m sure they are gonna be pushing her around some more as a noble too.

I love seeing the appreciation of Angelica as a person because this short story really sold me of her inner character and how Rosemyne and those of the temple are some of the only people that seem to have ever praised her. Makes you wonder if nobles have any understanding of what positive reinforcement is Angelica's family apparently has not and bootlicking of the Veronica camp does not count since praise without merit reinforces nothing but bad habits, more on that later. Can not agree with your take more about Adolphine and empathizing with Ortwin on how she has been treated as a second place prize that has not been even given the courtesy of official courtship let alone courting based on feelings of romance.
The confrontation between Traugott and Justus is especially interesting and grows more understandable the more you think about what Justus values. Top three with everything quite a bit below except maybe his collection hobby is Ferdinand, Rihyarda, and Rozemyne. Ferdinand is his one and only lord he serves, Rihyarda is not only his mother but a role model of how to serve your lord or lady, and Rozemyne while starting out as a curiosity has taken actions to improve Ferdinand's quality of life in ways that no one ever has. Considering we found out that Justus's opinion of Rozemyne goes up after this incident specifically at the end of Part 4 Volume 3 if this interaction between Traugott and Justus would have occurred later Traugott might be a cripple or worse.
Something slightly eluded to in the video and discussed a little by others here in the comments is Oswald and his what I would describe as criminal negligence and dereliction of duty in regards to his service of Wilfred. As an up to date light novel reader my opinion of him has been steadily progressed downward. He does not make a good first impression but it appears he learns from his mistake until you get the side story from Lamprecht's POV in Part 3. Oswald fears Rosemyne "stealing" the position of Aub while he is not the only person with this view as the head attendant like Rihyarda for Rosemyne his philosophy is what will be filtered down to the apprentices. The man has almost no consideration for merit and thinks primarily on terms of status. The man is 30 when introduced let no one pretend he does not understand the family tree shenanigans that Elvira explained and knows full well why the factions politics are in their current state. He has Wilfred's weakness for not pushing himself if not pushed by an external force but is without Wilfred's good qualities such as sincerity. His natural form of bootlicker stifles Wilfred's potential growth and certainly his understanding of the forces and intentions of those around him that are not as straightforward with him as Rosemyne or Ferdinand. I fear for what Wilfred is going to have to go through if he wants to reach Rosemyne's level of understanding of noble society, Charlotte's level may be permanently out of reach because she has drive and will continually improve.
If Angelica failed as a Guard Knight by walking off in the middle of protecting Rozemyne from Ferdinand, what does that say about Damuel who never even drew his weapon?
Come on Damuel, protect your lady for the dangerous psychopath.
I would love more of Hannelore's side of year 2...
I definitely feel sorry for Hannelore, because there's so much happening around her that she constantly just has to deal with being dragged along with. I seriously hope that down the road, she manages to fight her way outside of the currents that Rozemyne and Lestilaut are constantly buffeting her with. She deserves so much more and is too precious to just let her become another piece in the machinations of those two, whether they're aware of it or not.

What are some of the other novels you have on your shelf. I feel as though I should recognize a few of them but I am unable to clearly read the titles. Can you please give me a list of those in your backdrop
I change them as my collection grows. The top shelf currently is I'm in Love with the Villainess, Bookworm, and Made in Abyss. The second shelf has Uzumaki, Goblin Slayer, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Adachi and Shimamura, and the shelf below that has various other books and manga that have come into my possession. I have the first volumes of Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, and some one off books like Three Days of Happiness, I Had That Same Dream Again. My lowest shelf has Overlord because they're hard cover and were getting so heavy it was breaking down the cheap shelf I have.

Yes, there do exist a few volumes of Side Stories Collection and the first one is close to translated, but OP asked about more Royal Academy Stories, like the second year or something. And there are non of those, and probably never will be, as the author is currently busy finishing the main story, writing the spinoff and planing a sequel.

The difference is she really doesn't want to win... though feels she had too for her own personal reason rather than for a group achievement. She is mainly focused on herself and her desires for the most of her first school year unlike Harry who just wanted to fit in... not look like a weirdo and if he got bonus points for his house awesome... the difference is in being active or reactive.

I get everything with what Traugott did was wrong, but I will always look at Justus with a side eye. I just have an aversion to violence of any kind, but hey, I understand that's my trauma that's got me uneasy.

Sieglinde's (Hannelore's mom) illustration used here comes from Fanbook 5 (not translated), and she has her first illustration in the novel in P5V3.
Aub Dunkelfelger's first illustration in the novel is in P5V7. As for the illustration used here, I could not find it, so I assume it comes from Fanbook 6 or 7.
Hmm... Do they ever specify the stepiing stones between commoner, lay noble, mid noble and arch noble in amount of mana?
Like transformm a fey stonen is minimum for x and needinng x amount of bars on the "power meeasssurer" at the temple etc?
It seems to be less of a specific figure of having x mana, and more relative level of mana compared to others in the duchy.
The Klassenburg candidate said Rosemain could be a second wife if she could match his mana level.
Then Ferninand was noted as being incompatible with the other archnobles from Erhenfest, but matching higher rank duchies.
This would also explain why Mana compression is kept as a family secret, because the family method would be one way of ensuring that they stay at a top rank .
