[TRIP REPORT] Milan To Zurich By Bernina Express In First Class

  • The Bernina Express operated by RhB is one of the most famous panoramic train journeys you can do in Switzerland. The train connects the Swiss city of Chur with the Italian village of Tirano via the scenic Bernina Railway reaching a height of 2253 meters above sea level. The journey gives you breathtaking views of the Alps during each season. When travelling between Milan and Zurich it is well worth to take this detour and swap the fast SBB Eurocity train for the much slower Panorama Express of the Rhaetian Railway!

    During the summer, after arriving in Tirano with the Bernina Express coming from Chur, it is possible to continue towards Lugano with a red bus of the Rhaetian railway, also called BERNINA EXPRESS. Same thing in the opposite direction. It is included in the price of the Eurrail pass, Interrail pass, Swiss Travel Pass and similar. Only seat reservation, mandatory, is not included. The Tirano railway station of the Rhaetian railway, although it is in Italy, is considered Swiss territory, therefore Swiss VAT applies to tickets, souvenirs etc. sold at the counter. Luggage shipped from Switzerland to Tirano is not subject to customs declaration.

      Tirano to Chur is always available and cannot sell out. The Rhaetian Railway RhB should be able to sell you this ticket on their website, but there is no real point in booking it way in advance as the price is fixed.

    The Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway is closed due to a landslide between Poschiavo and Alp Grüm. Since at the same time the pass road is not even passable, it is not possible to provide a replacement service. This is indicated in a press release issued a short while ago by the Rhaetian Railway itself. For the local population, an extraordinary bus connection has been set up from Poschiavo to Cavaglia and a further train shuttle service from Cavaglia to Alp Grüm. The offer is valid in both directions, therefore also from Alp Grüm to Poschiavo.
    The duration of the interruption is indeterminate. Trains on the Bernina line run between St. Moritz (GR) and Alp Grüm and between Tirano (I) and Poschiavo.

    How did you film this video clip, sitting inside the train with reflective windows all along? Rode this train a couple weeks ago. Was extremely disappointed with what I could capture. Please advise, so I can do a better job next time.

    • @Tjuk02
      @Tjuk02  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reflection is kinda a challenge for us photographers indeed. However, the Bernina Express panorama cars have a small window at one end of the car which can be opened. The Allegra unit in the front pulling the train have normal windows in the compartment which can be opened and pulled down for 50%, making it a better choice to sit there if you are all about taking pictures. Hope this info helps you out!

    Hi is it running everyday for this train? From Milan to Zurich doesn't arrive directly? Must change the train from Tirano with Berinna Express to Chur? chur to Zurich? Total 4 and half hours?

    • @Tjuk02
      @Tjuk02  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have a daily option to travel from Milan to Zurich with the Bernina Express. The whole journey takes 9 hours and 33 minutes to complete. The direct Eurocity trains from Milan to Zurich covers it in 3 hours and 17 minutes.

    • @Luigi-uj5ml
      @Luigi-uj5ml ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both connections are currently interrupted on Swiss territory. The Eurocity trains connecting Milan Centrale with Zurich take 4 hours and 17 minutes to travel along the San Gottardo panoramic line (the base tunnel is closed following the derailment of the freight train which destroyed 8 km of sleepers). Instead, the Bernina railway has been interrupted since yesterday due to a landslide between Poschiavo and Alp Grüm. This is indicated in a press release issued a short while ago by the Rhaetian Railway itself. For the local population, an extraordinary bus connection has been set up from Poschiavo to Cavaglia and a further train shuttle service from Cavaglia to Alp Grüm. Me and my wife are planning to travel from italy to Swiss also. Is bernina express more expensive than the direct route from milan to zurich?

    • @Tjuk02
      @Tjuk02  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it's for sure more expensive than the direct Milan to Zürich EuroCity train, because the route with the Bernina Express doesn't have any saver fares or early bird discounts. It's a fixed price whenever you buy and it cannot sell out, only the special panorama coaches can sell out. For the direct EuroCity trains from Milan to Zürich you can buy a cheap early bird ticket up to 3 months in advance. If planning to do the Bernina Express you should look into a railpass like Eurail or Swiss Travel Pass to save you some money. Wish you happy travels!

    How do you book tickets in advance from Milan to Tirana? What’s the price ? What’s the price from Tirano to Chur and back ? Can do do the hop on hop off? Does the train stop anywhere in between? How many days in advance should we book if we plan to travel in June

    • @Tjuk02
      @Tjuk02  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      From Milan to Tirano you can buy tickets on the Trenord website, but there is no need to buy them in advance. It's a fixed price of 11,50 EUR for a single and double for a return. The same goes for Tirano to Chur. Fixed price of 63 CHF for a single and double for a return. These tickets cannot sell out and you can buy them anytime. There is however a Saver Day Pass sold by SBB in Swiss which is valid on the Bernina Express all the way to Tirano and back. If you book 2 months in advance the price starts at 53 CHF. With any of the above mentioned tickets you can just hop on and off any train along the route!

To ride the Bernina Express onboard the panoramic coaches you need the basic fare ticket + a seat reservation for the section you want to travel on. • @Tjuk02
      @Tjuk02  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for replying late, but yes you may leave your luggage at the train station in Tirano. Just walk up to the ticket office and say you want to store your luggage. They charge 8 CHF per item and will keep it till closing time, which is 17:00 or 18:00 hours depending on the day. A better option might be to use the lockers over at Zürich Main Station. The new grey ones can hold your luggage for up to 96 hours, payment by card. The older blue coin lockers can hold your stuff for max 72 hours.
