Joel Wolfe spoke as if he wants to make it seem like a hand shake deal hasn’t already happened. Everything he said was to assure people that he hasn’t already made his decision. It’s exactly what you would say if he has already made a decision.
My concern with Mookie playing ss is that his slugging % plummeted last season when he made the change. His slugging % in May was .390 and June .358. Hopefully, with a long adjustment period, he can maintain MVP worthy hitting stats.
From someone who’s been paying close attention to the Japanese players and followed the samurai japan’s WBC journey closely, I wanna say sasaki is 80-90% a padre if it’s not already a done deal. Apologies for the long essay in advance. His last off season rumours regarding early posting was so unexpected. Now they are saying chiba lotte promised sasaki about early posting but I really doubt it, because all the sport media and Japanese tabloids(which are usually surprisingly accurate) never had anything on this when he got drafted and signed contracts, and most importantly, he has never mentioned about wanting to go to mlb early publicly before last offseason. I think WBC opened his eyes to the major league, especially conversations with Darvish must have given him a lot of info and suggestions about coming to mlb early. Of course I think his goal is to pitch in the majors eventually, but it was never “I want to go now”. Also not saying darvish was tampering but I do think he and actually ohtani as well both said they wish they could’ve come to the majors at a younger age. Also on top of this, in one of Darvish’s radio episodes last offseason when Yamamoto just signed with the dodgers he mentioned that he would cry if sasaki goes to the dodgers and how he wish Japanese players can go to the Padres so they can beat the dodgers together😂 obviously nothing wrong with that, but given how sasaki was suddenly so eager to come and the timing of the Yamamoto signing, it’s kinda easy to speculate there’s been talks among the players. Also I think sasaki’s priority is not winning, or I should say it’s not the most important thing on his mind unlike ohtani and Yamamoto. I would say they main reason for him to come early is to improve his skills, mechanics, pitching knowledge, basically everything possible to exploit his own potential. So I would imagine anywhere with great pitcher development lab would interest him, that’s why I think there’s still a tiny chance he signs somewhere else, and that’s also why I think Wolfe tried to not count anyone out in his interview. Lastly with the small-mid market thingy. I don’t think it’s entirely agent talk. Sasaki in a way is a pretty awkward guy, with his personal trauma and stuff, he is pretty introverted especially around the media. With the chaos and drama he had about posting these two offseasons, media, commentators, fans, former players, baseball association higher ups have all came out criticised his decision and how he not only didn’t help the Chiba lotte win anything (which is usually a soft requirement for players to be posted as it showed that they contributed enough to the ball club), but also set back the org by not allowing them to get a good amount of posting fee while losing their best pitcher. He was scolded for being selfish and self centred and all these are reasons for this not-so-good mental health which Wolfe also mentioned about. Not wanting to be the centre of attention, thus sign with a smaller market team, wouldn’t be too surprised either. (But I do think he would still wanna go to a place where there are other Japanese players or former presence eg mariners as it will help him to blend in). Anyways sorry again for the long comment, but if the dodgers lose out on sasaki, I don’t think it’s that devastating. Just my personal opinion.
While the comments from Dodgers' GM made the most sense because he was talking about what the Dodgers can do for Sasaki, perhaps Sasaki may wish to avoid both the Dodgers and Padres because they already have 2 Japanese pitchers. Sasaki and Yamamoto have been really close friends for years based on Japanese sports media, which is also why he may not wish to compete with Yamamoto for a starter position. That said, Sasaki will need a lot of support and understanding from his new team. One of the criticism by Chiba Marines fans was that Sasaki was not able to maintain a starter rotation for an entire season. He couldn't handle 中6日--6-day rest or once a week pitching--because his pitching coach (YOSHII Masato) placed strict caps on the number of innings due to Sasaki's physical endurance. YOSHII also played in the MLB for a few seasons in his 30s. Sasaki has tremendous talent and potential but he still needs to work on his stamina if he wishes to be a starter, especially as MLB has slightly more games than NPB. Thus, the team will need a 6-man rotation at the minimum for Sasaki to be part of it. (He may also be successful as a closer.) I have heard the Dodgers and Mets are already thinking of it to reduce injuries regardless of Sasaki. I do recall Darvish talking about the need for a 6-man rotation in the MLB in a media interview many years ago because too many pitchers were getting injured. Or they can use the NPB ball which is slightly lighter and less slippery.
@@yo2trader539 well said, agree with everything. I think the 6 man rotation is incredibly important for sasaki to phase in to the mlb schedule and intensity as well, which I think the dodgers has the leverage here as they are constructing this with ohtani taking up only 1 roster spot. So this would be the advantage (and probably the only real advantage) that the dodgers has on signing him. To be honest, and obviously I’m not a sasaki hater, but I genuinely think he’ll have a pretty slow (and maybe rough) start in the majors especially given all the light/controlled workload and injuries he’s been dealing with the past few years. Looking at yamamoto who had minimal health issues in npb, but spent half of the time on the IL first year in mlb should give everyone a solid idea of the differences between the two leagues, it’s hard to go 7 innings every start in mlb unless you don’t preserve yourself at all. Ps it’s also really interesting seeing the different approaches by npb ball clubs and managers, because there are managers like yoshii who place strict innings limit and managers like kanemoto who basically ruined fujinami.
Share Anthony’s Teo feeling, I trust Dodgers gave Teo their best offer and it’s now in Teo’s court, see if money will sway him it is business > team love
Friedman is fool if that's true, keep negotiating, ask Teoscar what it's going to take to get a deal done, he is way too important to get away because of an extra year or two. smh.
The Dodgers haven’t had a homegrown (drafted & developed) position player integrated into an everyday role since Will Smith in 2019. Since that time, it’s been an up & down (mostly down) trial with young, highly touted players in their system - DJ Peters, Michael Busch, Miguel Vargas, Gavin Lux, James Outman. Andy Pages is a wait & see with his sophomore season and the fact that he’s currently a platoon guy so let’s see if that changes this season. Dalton Rushing is the next touted prospect so let’s see if he’s given any runway.
@@ToddRuxpin doubt it but yankees I could see him signing with. worst part is it now puts pressure on guys like pages, conforto and rushing to be great and that is just unrealistic offense will be weaker this year.
Hi, the Roki Sasaki agent is just trying to make it look like it is fair process, so when he does sign with the Dodgers it won’t be investigated by MLB
Sasaki has not won any of the top 3 NPB prestigious awards nor accolades near what Yoshi has, he def needs time to become a consistent starter, a rotation count that he’s used to and coaching staff that know how to elevate NPB pitchers to reach his highly touted talent
Without Teoscar our lineup lacks depth and power, Friedman needs to go out of his comfort zone for the good of the team and sign him before a rival team does. Do we really want to be facing Soto/Lindor/Vientos/Teoscar in October?
Sooooo there’s restraint on the 4th year for Teo but where was the restraint on the Will Smith 10 years $140M extension? Teo made us forget about the lackluster season for Will Smith🤔
@@littlesametake Teo’s bat out of the postseason lineup , we don’t win WS period! The point being made is about the Dodgers concerned about an additional year for Teo but no issue for extending a catcher until he’s 39 seems disingenuous!

While the Dodgers have been to playoffs virtually 15 straight years with 14 without Sho. 2. We won 3 playoff games without WS MVP Freeman 3. Dodgers one of a one team to field a legit 6 man pitching rotation just like Japan league 4. Again he starts as closer to adjust physically(injuries from last year), culturally(America with two other countrymen stars closer to his age. Padres Darvish is too old) and publicity(protection against Japanese shaming) plus learn to master one more pitch before becoming a starter 😊. If he does not pick Dodgers then it is not objective because money is a non-issue now.
