The "Army" Wong puts together are vessels in which Doctor Strange can cast magic without paying a significant price. This group of monks, essentially take the cost of the magic Strange casts. That's why they are shown to have growths, bleeding profusely, blind, and everything like that.
If you save a life, another dies is also a example of the idea of equal exchange. I've heard the idea in to mages/wizards in fantasy books or more recently on Sabrina on Netflix.
I watched the Dr. Strange movie a couple hours ago. It was amazing!!! And I'm gonna leave it at that...

I actually really like ANAD Dr. Strange. I like the world building that Way of the Weird accomplished, and I like the new information/limitations placed on magic users. They CAN do massive spells, but not without paying a price. I think that's so cool.

Yeah, and the thing is, he's also sufficient enough in science to work it together with his already powerful magic. It's going to be weird if they leave him out of this story arc

yeah he is dealing with Tony Stark, this takes place around the same time as War Machine died, Doom is helping Tony Cope with his death.
Derek still doesn't make sense, i get that for publishing sake they can make excuses like "he's busy with other things," but this event will affect every magic wielder, including doom. So i think the smart move is to involve him later in the story because, if they just say that he's busy with the whole ironman ordeal, it's just a lazy excuse
he wasn't in the story at all from what I remember, another reason could be Strange still thinks he is a villain and didn't want to contact villians? Dr Doom hasn't done anything publicly heroic, so yeah

I like Dr strange and have for a long time now his comics are usually weird and trippy and i like that crazy magical shut. it would be great if u did more if his stories.

Assuming the concept of the cost of using magic has been consistent throughout doctor stranges history, what is the difference between Stephen conjuring a weapon (in the movie) vs. him actually casting a spell. because as far as I recognized, Stephen didn't say any actual spells in the film except maybe the one from the book of kagleioso (spelling attempt terrible) but even then he was using a relic (eye of agamotto)? im basically asking what constitutes a magical being using 'magic' vs. them just using a relic or energy manipulation (if energy manipulation doesnt count as magic) thanks I love your videos!:)

But does that count as magic? Spiritual etheral beings? Because some spirtual beings are merely evolved beings and who's power may be perceived as magic actually just evolved over time as opposed to Arcane magic which Sorcerer supreme has dominion over. Scarlet witch for example although she a reality warping mage now, in some continuities is just using powers granted by evolution
If I remember correctly, Senor Magico does appear later in the comic. I just read the second volume of this comic that just released.
All New All Different Doctor Strange has been a breath of fresh air in comics. Very fun read.

I honestly don't read much of Dr. Strange (only researched him) but this version of him reminds me of the Bayonetta series...& i love that. Dr. Strange can see things that Non-Mystic beings can't.

Rob, thanks a lot for telling this story!! I read it when it came out but you narrate it brilliantly. I actually loved the premise of science vs magic, I'm a sucker for it, so naturally it was a complete delight to read this followed by The last days of magic. The only problem that I have is the continuity with Civil War 2, where does this fit? Because we see Doctor Strange fighting alongside Iron man and company, I think you've mentioned this issue before, hopefully it'll be solved soon. I'm liking both stories though, so no complaints from me there, but I'd really like to understand how they fit together. Thanks again!

I’m loving the new doc strange I think it has massive enormous potential. Even in the MCU. It would be a good doctor strange movie in the MCU. I’d like to see the next avengers movie face off against the void, so until then we need a story. Why not this one. Unless this story is about the end of the world on a scale that dwarfs the epic-ness of the stories of Robert Reynolds.
This comic series is one of the best from Marvel or DC. Reading this arc had uncomfortable moments which was great for a Doctor Strange comic, especially the creatures leaching off humans and the demons on top of Zelma's head.
My 2 cents: Reed richards favors science over magic. He helped design the multiverse, right? Well, he didnt do magic quite like it was and now it is a tangible thing that can be killed because thats how reed sees it. Otherwise, we would see the vishanti defend against the Imperikul? You know what i mean? ok, love the show bro!
He saves lives and doesn't take any, creating an unbalance.
The Z Fighters made good wishes and never made bad wishes, creating an unbalance during the last half of DBGT.

Seen the film. It's really good. I'm really interested as to how they are going to afford these big actors into Infinity Gauntlet. We're looking at least 12 high profile actors. 12 big paychecks for the same outcome for 6 high profile actors. Have we reached breaking point? We'll see.

yeah, so magic is more like an actual physical force. For each time he uses magic the force pushes back on him. Like pushing a wall the wall pushes back at you with the same amount of force. Would explain the whole balance deal, glad to see some of the changes they did with the strange story.

Here is one I have never seen on U tube, and I think it would be interesting, Tony Stark versus Superman, it seems slanted, but Lex Luthor is Superman's polar opposite, and I would like to see how Tony Stark would fair against Superman. This, with the fact that Tony would have the ability to use Kryptonite like Lex or Batman.

Real Magic 101 - one cannot perceive that which they are not the vibration of. I am not criticizing Strange's stories - I am providing a different context. Here is a super-simplified example. If one chooses to be well trained in "white magic" and should cross the path of someone well-trained in "dark magic" the dark practitioner might perceive that a light practitioner is indeed versed in magic but is helpless to practice power over the other magician. The two exist in vibrations of different frequencies that do not physically interfere with each other. Dark magic is helpless over one who is not living in fear-based knowledge. Try this in real life - fun! Dark magicians rely on fear. Light magicians rely on compassion and unconditional love. Even Batman understands this. Remember when Joker Spectre held Batman in his fist (Injustice Gods Among Us)? Batman was completely unfazed and Zatanna poofed him away. Classic themes - light and dark magic. Magic!

Anyone know of what issue it was when Doctor Strange was attacked by this alien mystical warrior . I remember this assasin earned the right to get sent to attack him ONLY after fighting another in an arena like a gladiator . He was sent by some mysterious overlord unseen in that issue ( at the time ) he seemed to only brazenly attack him physically with ax , sword some physical weapon though his attacker was protected against Doctor Strane's magic .. partially at least .

This, The Ultimates, Thor, Black Panther and Sam Wilson are the best from Marvel right now. Especially Dr. Strange; I was never a real reader/fan of Dr. Strange until Aaron's run.....

I'm glad you finally did this story! What I don't understand is if magic is linked to a source like the temple of Watoomb. Does that mean the empirical killed the Vishanti, Cyttorak etc? I'm up to the most recent issue of this story and they still don't explain what happen to them.

Have these events effected characters like Doctor Doom, Dormammu, Mephisto, Thor/Asgard?
as far as we know: Some minor extradimensional Villains, Dormammu (and thus Mordo), Nightmare and Hell are not affected. So it stands to reason that earth wasn't the endpoint for the Emperikul and other magic dimensions are still alive and thriving.

I totally forgot that Doctor Strange reached out to Manthing and Weirdworld. I've been wishing Jason Aaron would take strange to Weirdworld as that series was really solid till it was abandoned, along with the black knight series. Manthing was MIA in Howard The Duck as a secretwars issue that was not solved (Manthings running in herds in Weirdworld). I've really enjoyed the mystic side of Marvel lately. I would say don't forget the Tie-ins because they do tie-in, that being the Deadpool last days of magic and the Other One shot.
Last mystical issue/question/what ever... "the Darkhold" don't know if that's something worth explaining with agents of shield now or a save it for next October

Wish I could have been part of this discussion back at the time. Oh well, never too late to leave my two cents.
Spell cost is my absolute most favorite thing to come out of this series (and this series has a lot of my favorite things), being a way to make Strange reluctant to bring out the super big spells without taking the Nerfbat to him. While it has a similar idea to Strange being asked to participate in the War of the Seven Spheres, spell cost was not a thing that existed then. I don't mean it wasn't one of Marvel's rules... I mean _in uninverse_ it didn't exist. The series says that Strange cannot eat normal food because of spell cost, but it also contains a flashback to "a few years ago" that says Strange was already unable to eat normal food by that point. This story arc takes place in the sliding year 14. It doesn't matter if your definition of "a few" is the more common "three or more" (which would put the flashback in year 11 or earlier) or the more dictionary accurate "two or more" (year 12 or earlier) because issues from New Avengers in year 13 show Strange eating normal food.
My interpretation is that this is an _in universe_ retcon: meaning that when Reese transferred his power from Doom to Reed at the end of _Secret Wars,_ the first thing Reed did was to recreate the 616 universe... but he didn't do it perfectly. (Who knows, that might be why Franklin took over creating new universes eight months later.) Any discrepancies between pre-_Secret Wars_ and post-_Secret Wars_ is completely due to how Reed recreated his universe. That spell cost now exist means Reed put it there, probably because he was under the assumption that that's how magic worked. And it doesn't matter if spell cost didn't exist before... because the universe was recreated with it in it's history. Lastly, food for thought: Strange's spell debt had been at lethal levels for at least a few years before this arc started, and a lot of the pain and suffering he goes through in this series is also due to spell cost. Since Reed recreated the universe with spell cost included, that makes Reed unintentionally the single biggest a[beep] in Strange's life.
