    I recently bought the Riversmith 4 banger fly rod vault. I’ve used it twice and it is extremely convenient. Keeps the rods safe, leaves a ton more room inside my vehicle, and saves a bunch of time re-lining the rod between stops. Is it necessary, no. But if you can afford it, your fishing adventures will certainly be improved. Plus do you realize how hard I look driving around with my 4 Runner with a fly rod vault on the top? I’ve started carrying a bat to keep the women off of me.

    Went fishing with a guide last weekend. His method: an old ski rack from a thrift store. $30-$50 and keeps rods secure. Probably wouldn’t trust it if you’re parking publicly for any length of time but for a day trip up the hills you’re golden. Starting my search now.

    bought the Orvis magnetic holder 15 years ago works great jumping from hole to hole while driving . Holds 6 rods but as the huge man says things can hit the rods while drying I e: pheasants. Black birds coming out of a field , mud chunks from beet trucks , fortunately I have never had a rod broken. Up side of these is if you travel a lot in rental vehicles they fit almost all except the ones with fiberglass hoods . Have a Rodsmith car top holder on my Sequoia works good looks cool :-) upside for me can travel 80mph don’t have to worry about rods , get to busy boat ramp back trailer in dump boat pull rods out your fishing . Another option is the rod sleeves I use these on all my Spey rods just break down the rod in half slip in sleeve good to go there cheap and come in different colors, use different colors to signify weight of rod I have in them . Stay Hugh

    if you pile up the rods in the middle of the car (or run them through the back cab window of a truck like I do), run the leader around the arbor of the reel, hook the fly to the stripping guide. then take the leader butt and wrap it once around the rod and stripping guide. its hard to explain in writing but it stops the rods from getting all tangled.

    How else will everyone know I do truck stuff with my truck?

  • @patches152
    @patches152 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a full sized truck with no cover on the bed. I use a bungie cord strung along the inside of the bed diagonally from front top to rear bottom, and I tuck the reel in between the bungie and the side of the bed. The reel goes into the corner, closest to the cab. The wheel well keeps the tips from getting stuck in the gap between the gate and the bed. It's worked great for years now.
    Downside: requires tie down points inside the bed to work. My dad's older truck has no such tie downs so he's screwed. Rod vault for him, I guess

  • @Hrogthar
    @Hrogthar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I wonder how much time is saved in the end by skipping stringing up a fly rod. Just timed myself and it was about 30 seconds. So... multiply that by 4 for each rod... That's about two minutes. I'll add an extra minute for fumbling.
    3 minutes per stop. Let's be generous and assume you truly are a HUGE fly fisherman... Say you fish 5 days a week, and make 3 different stops each day. That's 9 minutes a day. I'll add another extra minute for generosity. So, 50 minutes - an hour a week. Fish all year at that pace? That's 43 hours a year you're saving.
    So... Is it worth it? Let's see.
    43 hours a year saved for a $2000 purchase. That is $46.5 dollars for every hour saved. Or $2.33 for each time you string up your rods.
    Would you pay $2.33 to a guy to string up your rods for you at every stop you make? (instantly, btw, he is a magic rod assistant since he has to compete with the rod vault)
    If you've got the money, it might be worth it. If not, probably not. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

    • @JP-dz7zu
      @JP-dz7zu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bad math. A good rod vault is $300 for the 2 banger and $600 for the 4 banger. It might take 30 seconds to snap a rod together and line it if you are very quick, but tying on the fly, indicator etc adds another minute or so. How much will it cost when a rod snaps in the back of your vehicle because you do something dumb? How do you even get chicks without a rod vault?

    If you break your rod in two between spots make sure to have two garden velcro strips on your person. The garden ones are wide and cheap. Put one at the grip and one 2/3s the way up keeps your line under control, especially mono, and it keeps the rod(s) from shifting. I have one of the inside, bungee style systems in my SUV, but this works great in almost any scenario. It's also a go to when I'm bushwhacking. My line gets caught in the trees a lot less. I hate line in the trees!!! I hate it more than spider web in the face. The worst is spider web in the face and then rod in the trees.

    $2000 for their 2 rod case and $4000 for their 6 rod case, they must be out of their MIND!!!! I know what material cost, I know what labor cost. Their markup must be HUGE! There are other vaults out there for less that 1/3 the price of these, and they are, in my opinion, better. Full aluminum, hold up to 6 rods, no stupid tubes to break off you guides as you slide them in. Oh and you can get those in colors too.

    On my Tonneau cover, I have a rack and on that rack which was for bicycles... I eliminated a few of the the 4 bike racks and added a ski rack. It doubles as a short haul rack for poles. I dont travel long distances with poles in rack but I guess I could.

    A) 100% would not drive down the canyon of the Big T with a rod under my windshield whipper as the image suggests.
    B) You forgot the ski rack method, that is very popular where I live, and perhaps the dumbest option, out the passenger window.
    C) I may not have a guiding license, but I do have a 598 day fishing streak and will be keeping my rod vault. Thank you.

    You forgot about the number one reason to have a rod vault. If I get one it would be home made and it would only be a one rod vault. The reason you ask? so when I'm fishing with a buddy I get to the hole first with a setup rod. #1 way to catch more fish then your buddy
