I own a L332 (over three years now) with full service history and it really is a joy to drive. I recently tested a L405 and a Sport (as I’m thinking of changing car) and I fully endorse Matt’s comments. Forget mpg and £pg. It’s all about smiles per mile. :-)

It's also worth noting that the air sus compressor is a serviceable part; every year or two it's worth changing the seals in the pump and valve block as well as replacing the dessicant bag. Doing both of these things will vastly prolong the life of the whole air sus system

my 2000 P38 4.0lt V8 petrol cost £1650 3 yrs ago - 113k miles (I've done 5k since ownership). Like property being ALL about Location, Location, Location. RR ownership is ALL about Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance. Mine has suffered ZERO depreciation and over 5k miles has cost about £1500 - all upfront maintenance before I started using it. Being a home mechanic type - I love the more analogue nature of the P38. If I was going to upgrade I would probably opt for a 2008-09 L322 but in all honesty, I'm more likely to spend £5000 rebuilding the engine (if required) before moving on - there is literally nothing else wrong with it. Glad you are enjoying your new purchase - enjoy it and ignore the nay sayers

    • @HighPeakAutos
      @HighPeakAutos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I know what you mean. The adaptive suspension does well when you're driving quickly around corners but at lower speeds it can feel a bit wallowy. Its not as trashy as the Sport, but crashier than you'd expect - if any of that makes sense haha

So, you know the issue with regards to the Bluetooth streaming, not displaying the track information?
That was going to be implemented, however the project managers over at Gaydon, were putting pressure on the infotainment department to get the vehicle pushed through to final prototype stage. Because these project managers get bonuses to reach their set time goals (they call them Gateways), that's all they really care about.
Sorry, I didn't mean to have a rant. 🙄 I just know what happened about that. Don't ask me how 😉. The Land Rover dealerships have access to a system called "Pathfinder". It interfaces directly with factory software updates. Sadly though, the infotainment department didn't release an update for the L405. No harm in checking with your local dealer for any sw updates. I do know that there was a recent safety recall on the L405s to do with the door locking. Just thought I'd mention that.

So I had a D2 and had the 3 Amigos go on it. I had a L322 and had an issue with the air suspension. It didn't stop me getting my D4. Dial gear stick and all. I don't regret my decision to come back to LR. Mind you, I now don't use it much because of my job and living in the south of the US. But I have to agree with you on 2 things: 1. I enjoy driving it and it puts a smile on my face and 2. why not have the car you want. I wanted it, I can afford it and I plan to keep it for a couple of years and then maybe swap it out for a new Defender 110. Never be worried about the cost if that's the car you want or how far your commute is. I take the D4 to the local airport to stretch its legs (it sits most of the week) and to just enjoy driving it. The D4 is a heavy beast like the L405... I look forward to seeing what you do with the RR.

I've had a P38 4.6 228bhp V8 Autobiography for six years, only one problem. Well, I say problem, it was the gearbox heat sensor connected to the oil cooler. Nothing wrong with the gearbox, just the sensor. Every MOT passed (since I've had it) with not one advisory. I change all the fluids every two years; Gearbox, transfer case, both diffs and brake fluid. Oil, plugs and all filters done every year. It has never let me down. Nothing done whatsoever to the air suspension, six years and still going strong. I'm not saying I don't replace wearing items. The whole breaking system was renewed last year, even down to the bleed nipples. Why? Was looking very tired, I carry my grandkids, so did it for safety.

I was almost going to ask you on another video when you were going to do the full review of your Rover,
As my warranty starts to whine down, I'm starting to look at the L405 as my next upgrade, my '11 sport supercharged has been nothing but amazing and the only expense was a deductible payment to replace sway bar bushings which will cause it to sound like the suspension is failing. I was told by my local dealer that the timing chain issue has shown up as recently as 2016 models (supposedly was addressed in '13) but are few and rare. I love mine and can't wait for the upgrade in the next year, this review just essentially confirmed that I'm on the right track with these.
And yes, we do have some diesels here which are starting to come on the used market.
Keep up the good work! Always enjoy the videos!

I have so many things to say about the L405, I am an advocate, and I have even visited the factory.
The VSE has a fixed pano roof (in the UK), so a sliding roof was a cost option.
I ordered a new Autobiography (it’s not blingy I promise) and _deleted_ the sliding roof because the fixed roof looks so much better... for rear seat passengers anyway!
The VSE is definitely the “thinking man’s” L405 due to standard kit like semi-aniline leather, soft-close doors and 825W hifi, but the Vogue gets you 95% of the L405 benefits. The Autobiography gives you the ahhh-sweet feeling and I honestly recommend it despite the premium.
I have a P400e but totally agree the 4.4 SDV8 is the engine of choice for most. For city folk buying 2018+, though, P400e is epic.
Just buy one tomorrow of any age! Aintree Green pre-2018 looks fantastic. Black is a bit boring, but safe (sorry Matt, that means you are safe n boring).
I love the double glazing demo... so true. 👍

Excellent review chap. We have had RR / LR cars in the family since 2006 walking thru Disco 2, RR Vogue, RR Sport (x2 for my “WAG” 🤓), Disco Sport, Jag F Pace and now brand new Disco 5. My sons still drive the beaten up 16 year Disco 2 as it’s cheap to insure and the choice car for “Armageddon weather” but also a mobile skip and will shake off the inevitable parking knocks. Sooooo much “cooler” than their peer group Yaris, Fiesta and Polo’s plus they can sleep off hangovers in comfort 🤨 You are correct- maintain them at cheaper 4x4 specialists and they are more or less indestructible and reliable.

Excellent review again and as always.honest and to the point.
In the Netherlands, we pay 2848,- euro road tax annually for a 3.0 TDV6 SV Autobiography LWB.
Given that I consider myself quite the opposite of greedy and consider myself a very generous taxpayer :)
In my experience, it is easier to sell a full option used car on the used car market. Given the (road) tax system in the Netherlands, the market for this calibre of cars is very very small. The difference between +/-1770,-road tax for a RR Vogue or 2848,- for an Autobiography LWB is insignificant in that market.
The full experience is the reason why people buy a Range Rover.

Having been in a couple RRs they do indeed feel very special to be in. I think you are correct to use it regularly. They have huge amounts of electrics that drain the battery when not being used. A flat battery is a real bore, the boot is electric, for example, so won't open. Disconnect the battery and RR phone you to say it's been stolen.

Land Rover are back on track, i agree with your comments about the P38 problems, i suffered some first hand with my 2.5DSE which was a disaster after many trouble free years with my Classic. The P38 development spanned a time when Land Rover changed ownership so it is no wonder it had problems. I am looking for one of these now. I think the ride comparison with the L322 is different because the L405 has shed nearly half a ton in weight over that model which went a long way to reducing the bodies reaction to suspension inputs. I would argue the TDV6 is the one to have though?!
