Hi everyone. The truth is, I sing alto because I like to. No. I love to. When Vision was formed, there were more sopranos than altos, so I was allowed to stay in the alto section...It fulfilled a wish of mine to sing with Maurette some day, too...but when Richard says, "Van, I need you to sing soprano" --whether in the studio or live-- I say a little prayer, and march my very grateful self to the soprano section--which by the way, is held down very well....Pray for us. Love ya.
O wow! Vanessa, with your anointed minister and awesome sAnger self, welcome to youtube! You're not an impostor right lol? LOL at "I say a little prayer". I can imagine you saying... "God please don't let me pass out on the vamp!"
You are so right. Even when she could get up to the high notes, she couldn't stay there, except once in a green moon on a random good voice day. She is not a soprano. Another example is Melissa Bell who sings up to C# after high C on one video (search: Melissa Bell Youthful Praise), and comments start asking why she sings alto lol. Still more examples: Judith Mcallister, Melonie Daniels... the list goes on. I can hit 1st alto notes, but I cannot sing (stay in) tenor.
Probably because she wants to save her upper register as she ages...or because she knows that even though she has the high notes, she can't STAY up there like a soprano could. That's the difference b/w a soprano and a half-soprano(mezzo). Like Leontyne once said sing on your interest, not your principal.
I will add a comment as a male..Vanessa has been asked to sing soprano by Richard..she declined...Being a tenor I also sing alto naturally..and I also sing soprano excellently too..my leader would not let me sing soprano for an entire recording say 10 songs, alto maybe..bcuz after a while indeed your vocals starts phasing...take for example Blanche and Lejuene from D. Lawrence..they sing tenor to preserve their voices especially if you have a high lead to do..it's a strategy..safe one.
