Would a lens for your phone be something you’d use?

    • @jimbotski
      @jimbotski ปีที่แล้ว

Sure, Im going to start making smartphone short films, live streams, product videos, vlogs etc. This kit will be great. Alhtough..The AUD conversion is getting a 'royal fisting' at the moment. It's going to knock me back $1299 so I hope it's a solid futureproof investment that will last longer than my phones do. Im sure that an easy given. Great vid Mr Mayhew, I enjoyed the Platipus one too cheers.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography So, honest question mate. If you had 1300AUD to spare, would you lay it down on this kit? Or is that a bit too much due to the conversion. I see the retail price after the campaign will be. 1799 USD so I'm thinking 1300 AUD is a safe bet.

@@jimbotski if my main thing was mobile photography and that’s what I was investing my resources in to take the best mobile photos I could then yes. I just spent a lot more than that on a mirrorless camera body (no lens) because of what photos it could enable me to take. If that which you want to produce is important enough to you, it does come at a cost. It might be that only a couple of these lenses are what you need too :)

@@RalphMayhewPhotography Brilliant, thanks for the advice mate! Not much photos except product photography. I sold my DSLR and Ill be shooting mostly mobile video, vlogs, product vids, live stream events such as weddings. Also a bit of armature mobile film making. So not much photography will be going on except for when I'm traveling as I live between Bali and Australia. I guess, if the kit can help me with my videography and I've always go the option for mobile photography as well. It's a bit to ponder.

Ralph. One of your newer subscribers here. Can these work on iPhone 11 Pro and can i attach an external flash light (rather than, let’s say, a certain video lighting unit) whilst using a selfie stick? Thanks

      @RalphMayhewPhotography  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Great questions. Not sure what you mean by external flash light. It all depends on whether ShiftCam have made that phone cover. Worth asking them via their website, I reckon. Sorry I can’t help more.

Ralph, you may remember around a week ago my daughter bought the Ulanzi VL49 to work with her iPhone 11 plus thinking that it was just an external flash light which it obviously isn’t. She has since returned it even though you advised her on how she could still use it. What she really wanted was just a more powerful flash than the one she has on her phone for use outdoors. So I suppose a better question would be, are there any flash lights on the market and if there are, any to be recommended, and will the Shiftcam lenses work with the iPhone 11 plus? Thinking of getting her a set for Birthday, cheers. Andy

Gday Andrew. I’ve just asked ShiftCam as a few people are asking. I’ll get back to you when I know about iPhone 11 compatibility. Can you email me which will ensure you get your answer? If she wants a flash then there’s nothing out yet. But a MagSafe ring light might work. Does she have MagSafe tech? i've tried a number of the 3rd party camera apps, (Procam, Hallide, and about 3-4 others) and none of them allow you to adjust aperture. Furthermore, none of the images seem to have as much detail as the regular camera app.
The other thing that bothers me is that I can ONLY get 48mp images when I am in the 1x lens and have good light. And, most situations seem to keep returning an aperture of f/1.78, which isn't good for getting a wide depth of field. There's also just too many situations in which you can only get 12mp images.

    • @RalphMayhewPhotography
      @RalphMayhewPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

That's because your phone lens is a fixed aperture. You can't actually change it. Can just change where you are focused.
ONLY 48MP... ow many megapixels do you need? That's a lot right???
I'd suggest using the native phone app for general use, and an app when you're desiring a specific result, EG. long exposure effect.

All backers be carefull! for the company shiftcam
On the webshop they offer free shipping from a certain amount but they will charge you enormous amounts if you back them here. I did the biggest pledge and they now change me $275,00 dollars just for shipping. This is a scam that they are running. So you do not get the discount they offer here. They just charge you a lot extra after they completed in the form of shipping cost.

Just heard back from ShiftCam, they said:
"For the high shipping fee charges, we'll be using FedEx to ensure a smooth shipping and delivery process to our customer's address. The shipping fee covers the freight cost to their countries, tax and duties (this will depend on the regulation imposed by the country), a fuel surcharge imposed by the courier, and as well as any applicable courier service to ensure the safe arrival of their pledges, particularly considering the high value of the item. For our website, free shipping is offered for purchases over $130, and customs and duties fees are not included."
I hope this helps with your understanding of everything.

Literally all reviews about the Shiftcam LensUltra kit discredit the soundness of reviews on TH-cam because not a single reviewer criticised the lack of lens caps in the kit.
I do wonder if those reviewers would be so indifferent to the lack of lens caps if they had paid $1,200 plus shipping and heavy taxes (if outside the US) for the kit.
In any case, I am reporting Shiftcam to the Better Business Bureau.
I asked all reviewers why they didn’t criticise the lack of lens caps. I deleted the question so I will have just this comment here. I think it will be easier to focus on the matter this way.
Two of the reviewers got nasty and threatened me. They didn’t answer my question. A third one said that his kit actually had lens caps!!! But Shiftcam doesn’t even make lens caps!!!
Most reviewers just ignored my question. They know they can't answer my question and keep face as to not criticise the lack of lens caps in the kit is indefensible.
Just two reviewers answered my question. The first one said he doesn’t care about lens cap for the front lens. Still , he didn’t criticise the lack of lens cap for the rear lens.
In any case, that reviewer is contradicting himself because he claims to care only about the quality of image when choosing a lens but the lack of a lens cap will certainly affect the quality of the image as the more a lens is kept without a lens cap the more it will be exposed to dust, debris, moisture, bumps etc. Unless you keep your seven lenses in the carrying case forever and never use them!
A second reviewer said that it didn’t cross his mind as he thinks a cloth pouch is protection enough.
Both reviewers let their personal habits when it comes to gear protection get on the way of providing important information to viewers.
Let’s not forget that Beastgrip, Sandmarc , Reeflex, Moondog Labs and Moment sell their lenses with lens caps for both rear and front lens (Moment provides caps for the rear lens only but they sell caps for front lenses separately )
Doesn’t that fact deserves to be mentioned in a review about the new Shiftcam lenses seeing that Shiftcam is the only company manufacturing professional lenses for iPhone that doesn’t provide lens caps for their lenses ?
Shiftcam doesn’t even have lens caps to sell separately!!!
They don’t care about protecting their lenses. It’s called irresponsible manufacturing.
And I am not referring only to the kit. Individual lenses sold separately will also ship without lens caps.
Some reviewers replied that Shiftcam individual lenses will come in cases. First of all, their reviews are about the kit, not individual lenses sold separately at a higher price per lens. Second, lens cases are not as crucial as lens caps and they don’t do the same job.
Cases don't protect the lens when it is on the phone , for example.
Say you are walking in a park with your phone in a windy day. You are looking for a next place to do some shooting. What do you do? Put a lens cap on the lens and know the lens is protected against debris brought by the wind etc?
Or you take the backpack from your back, take the case from the backpack, remove the lens from the phone, put the lens in the case and back in the backpack just to invert the process 15 min later?
Or maybe you don’t care about protecting your lenses at all? But if this is the case then it's likely that the quality of your work will be pair with your standards and it won’t really matter which lens you use.
I can improvise my own lens case and have two Beastgrip tele lenses (with lens caps on both ends) in a hard sunglass case which easily fits in my backpack or camera bag. But I can’t improvise lens caps, especially for Shiftcam lenses which have a unique size.
Viewers rely on popular reviewers such as the ones who received a free kit from Shiftcam.
They should hear from those reviewers that the new Shiftcam lenses are likely to be the best lenses for iPhones in the market BUT they are shipping without lens caps so think carefully before ordering their lenses.
A protest against Shiftcam on TH-cam reviews would send a loud, clear message: Act as a responsible manufacturer and start the production of caps for all your different lenses. Rear and front.
But no reviewer is protesting. This way, I am.
    P.S. I walk my talk.
I bought lenses from Sandmarc, Moment, Beastgrip and Shiftcam last year. I compared them. The Shiftcam tele lens was clearly better than Moment and Sandmarc and a little better than the Beastgrip 2.0 tele.
I sent the Moment and Sandmarc lenses back without hesitation.
I kept the Beastrip and sent the Shiftcam lenses ( I had three) back after some deliberation because they didn't have lens caps and were not compatible with ND filters. I really wanted to keep the Shiftcam tele lens.
I thought that maybe I could live without a ND filter and use the lens just for indoors shooting. But I couldn't live with a lens without lens caps.
To end: Let me state the obvious and list the importance of lens caps according to K& F Concept:
"A lens cap protects the lens from dust and debris. Dust and dirt can build up on the lens, reducing image quality and causing loss of focus. It can also cause scratches on the lens, leading to permanent damage."
It also protects the lens from moisture. "Moisture can cause the lens coating to degrade, reducing image quality."
A lens cap provides a barrier against bumps and scratches.
"It protects the lens from fingerprints and other smudges. Fingerprints can reduce image quality and contrast, so it’s important to keep them off the lens. By using a lens cap, you can keep the lens free from fingerprints and other smudges.” (Interesting here is that one of the reviewers who threatened me mentioned that “The glass on these lenses is so clear every little bit of dust, every little bit of finger smudging …will show up on these lenses like nothing else” . But he doesn’t mention the lack of lens caps in the kit, much less that it is a contra)
They protect the lens from UV rays. "Exposure to UV rays can cause discoloration and fading of the lens coating, which can reduce image quality and contrast.”
Yet, Shiftcam doesn’t provide lens caps for their lenses. Unlike Beastgrip, Moment, Sandmarc, Reeflex and Moondog labs.

Hi Ralph. Thanks for your reply. You know, you are the only one who actually started a conversation with me. Three reviewers deleted my comment and the others simply buried their heads in the sand. One of them even said that he received lens caps with his kit!!!
I guess people are more open minded in Australia than they are in the UK or US.
Lens cases are not lens caps no matter what Shiftcam says. Besides, the 10 reviews are about the kit, not individual lenses being shipped individually at a higher price per lens.
Lens cases are nice but I can do without them. What I really need is a lens with two lens caps. I have two Beastgrip tele lenses, for example, and keep them in a sunglass case as I showed in a review about Beastgrip and Cinema P3 (with the Hulk thumbnail) . Both lenses have caps for the rear and front lens and are protected in a sunglass case that is very easy to fit in my backpack or camera bag if I go out really light.
I think you were very wrong in not mentioning the lack of lens caps even if you don't like them. But I can see that you are a reliable reviewer and will watch your videos.
This whole thing is very disheartening. I started to buy gear for iPhone less than a year ago. It was a learning curve. I had 30 years of experience as a news shooter but lenses for iPhone was a new world. I really struggled to find the best lens . Audio was much easier. I use with my iPhone the same Sennheiser MD 46 that I use with my ENG camera, for example.
Looking at the comments, it seems to me that most people writing have little if any knowledge of iPhone shooting and even when they do have knowledge is limited to one manufacturer only, normally Sandmarc or Moment. They rely on popular reviewers to make their decisions but they have been let down by the reviews on the Shiftcam kit. They will learn the hard way the difference a lens cap makes.
