    Was just thinking about buying the kapex today. I bought two of the Bosch axial glide saws (10'' and 12'') and I'd highly recommend them but the dust collection really sucks. As in it doesn't suck enough if you know what I mean. I'll stop

    Have had my Kaypex for almost 7 years. Has worked great for the job site with no issues. I do not use it for framing, but interior work. Was not designed as a framing saw. I would go with a Bosch for a framing/deck saw.

    Hi Scott,
    Another great episode. Gerard from the uk here again. Like you I am a bit spoilt as I has a festool Kapex. For me, the quality of cut produced by the festool is joinery quality - can’t be beaten.
    Looking forward to the next exciting episode 😉

    Got the kapex. Great saw but the saw stand looked bollocks so got the Bosch stand for it which folds down into a barrow. Much better. Here in the UK we use 110v on site so my midi was able to pull all the dust through the saw. My ctl 26 does a much better job. The mitre finder you get with itis pretty good to

    Kapex is a great mitre saw, well worth the $. But its not for rough as guts carpenters, throwing their tools on their utes. Its for quality carpenters, framing and fix. I've had mine for 10years and it still cuts as new. If you're only rough framing then the new Milwaukee 18v, 184mm ,dual bevel, sliding compound is a good light option.

    Hi mate, why didn't you notch out the posts for the bearers? Is that how it is done in New Zealand?

    • @TheBoufhead
      @TheBoufhead 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Code states you can't notch something any more than a third. His posts would have to be three times the size of the edge measurement of the bearer. No need for a post that big, just put them in the hole, shoot your heights, cut the posts and fix barers ontop.

Tripple thumbs up , great vids .. how the hell do you find time to edit ? do you have hobbies besides building ?

  • @carpenterone3
    @carpenterone3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I almost bought the kapex 3 times but a lot of them have motor issues and burn up, if it didn’t cost $1,600 I would take the plunge for the accuracy but Paying that much for something that might not make it in the field would kill me, if you leave It’s in the shop or if you’re a hobbyist woodworker (not you lol) it’ll probably hold up. But guys that really lay into them have complained a lot about them blowing up. Just my two cents. Awesome videos as always dude!!

    • @br6145
      @br6145 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive noticed some of the festool tools make a strange sound from the motor, almost as if theyre about to fall apart. Though probably just some chunky overengineered gears clanking about.

    • @carpenterone3
      @carpenterone3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The kapex actually burns out, I have there track saw (TS75) Both dominoes XL and 500, Two Sanders, jig saw, two routers And multiple other things from them and I agree their motors do make weird noises sometimes but the kapex Specifically has had well-documented motor problems.

      Yeah a lot of guys use it and have no problems but for the half that do go through hell, I am aware that the kapex is the most accurate saw but I respect Scott enough to let him know about the issues a lot of carpenters have so he can make a educated decision on if he wants to buy it or not.

    I guess if you are doing some super high end work on million dollar homes with lots of complex cuts but for the life of me I don' see why anyone would spend 3 X the cost of a Dewalt. I have had my Dewalt for years and it just works, I never even think about it. Paying over 1,500 for that saw is crazy town. Maybe I am missing the point but hell a Harbor Freight saw would do the same work you are doing for under 200.00. That said you have a great channel and do very nice work. Take care.

    why dont you stagger your blocking? You can through nail instead of toe nailing. Also I only ever use blocking if I have a decent span past 8 foot or so, you have beams pretty close together seems like overkill. It doesent hurt I guess, decks can never be too overbuilt.

    • @TheBoufhead

    • @whitacrebespoke
      @whitacrebespoke 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the whole point of toe or skew nailing it it’s a stronger fixing than nailing straight into end grain.

    • @stevend9960
      @stevend9960 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s pretty easy to through nail when inline. A slight angle on the nail and it’s done.

    • @mascmc1001
      @mascmc1001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam Lynch usually when boards are toe nailed you split the board and crack cause youre driving the nail in parallel with the grain. Through nailing is way stronger because the nail is going perpendicular through the board you are fastening...Toe nail a stud and smack it with your hammer, you will either rip the nails out or crack it. Whack a through nailed stud and you usually just bend the nails over and rip it away from the plate. Through nailing is way stronger imo.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mascmc1001 No need to toe nail - you through-nail from the opposite side but on an angle. You're still entering the end grain of the block. I've never understood why that basic technique seems to have eluded whole countries of framers.

      I checked out the new Makita DLS110 cordless chop saw last Saturday at my local Makita outlet in Aberdeen. Was well Impressed with some of the features, like the static slide rail as on the Festool. And it looked like the dust extraction was much improved. The added bonus of portability. As with all these new bigger 2x18v tools Makita are coming out with, I'd seriously recommend using the 5ah batteries with them. Just for the extra power and running time.
      Can't fault Festool quality. It's what you think is better value for you.

    Kapex is overpriced for what it is, yes it has some nice features but reliability not one of them, my mates died after 2 years on site use, my Bosch still going strong after 5 years onsite, my mate replaced Kapex with Bosch, wait until you price up the Kapex blades $$$$$$$.
    I had a Makita the ones with the see through blue blade guard, blade guard mechanism stuffed up within 6 months, then motor went within 12 months, got rid of the POS (Chinese made junk) went Bosch not looked back.

      2 years, man he must of been gutted

    • @zaneh6224
      @zaneh6224 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, he was, after paying so much for it and he treated it nicely, it was repaired under warranty, but took a while for the repair, it had a few small other niggling things he didn't like so after he got it back he sold it, the overpriced blades $200+ was the final nail in the coffin for it.
      I think they would be ok in a workshop setup where they don;t get moved, any saws that are constantly moving from jobsite to jobsite need to be strong and not a bit precious.

    • @zaneh6224
      @zaneh6224 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G-Shock Jock, Makita hasn't made SCMS saws in Japan for the AU markt for about 5 years they switched the production facilities to China like most because it's cheap, since then their reliability went USC, the most reliable ones they made were the older 10 & 12 series, these were bulletproof, unfortunately the new ones look flashy and shiny but are rubbish compared to the old stuff, fine for occasional DIY use but punishing them on site shown the weaknesses sooner rather than later.
      I also doubt you would be ok replacing a $1400 saw every year, I know I wouldn't and I don't know anyone that would think that's acceptable, I also do enough work to pay for the tool in a few jobs that's not the point.
      I still expect it to last many years without breaking, if your one is going ok after 5 years, lucky you, if you replaced it with a new one and the new one needed replacing every year I think you would be very pissed off.
      I'm not picking on festool KAPEX, it across the board the new breed of tools are made to have a finite life, there is too much plastic in them, undersized bearings, sintered gears, they are not designed to last forever, otherwise manufacturers wont make money and that's all it comes down to.
      I have one of my Dad's old Skill saws, it was used everyday for 20 years, it still works perfectly well today albeit a very heavy saw as it was made from real metal.
      If I had a $1400 saw and it let me down in a year or two, I wouldn't buy a new one from the same company, that's why I will never consider purchasing another Chinese Makita SCMS, I have two smaller 7 1/4 Japanese Makita, these are 8 or more years old, have cut enough decking to cover a football field and still working like day one.
      My mate was so impressed with one of them he bought the same saw (LS0714), aka now Chinese made version, the slide bearings went UTS in under 6 months and had a similar problem with the blade cover to my bigger one kept getting jammed when dropping the blade in under 12 months, it's false economy if the unit fails within warranty, then it costs the manufacturer money to repair it, if it fails outside of warranty then they make money, if you put crappy made components in the product to save a few cents here and there and these fail under warranty, then any saving you made during manufacturing are lost.
      My mate's failure says to me Makita skimped out on the quality Japanese components and substituted these with Chinese made sloppy tolerance versions, just because a component is shiny and looks the same doesn't mean it is the same.
      Main problem with losing a drop saw for repair, is it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks (festool) to have it returned, in the meantime you still need to keep working, this is when the reliability thing sux, do you bite the bullet and buy a cheapy as a temporary thing or just simply buy another full priced one.
      I don't imagine the repair centres have loaners they will give you while your one is on the shop.
