*I mostly take photographs **do7.pl/VideoMic** but there are a few things where video works best so I wanted an external mic to minimize interference from wind and focusing noise, this mic was the right price and came well recommended.I’ve found it light weight and easy to use with my Canon EOS 6D mk2, I can leave it on and it doesn’t interfere with stills photography, the instructions don’t seem to tell you but if you undo the cross head screw underneath the mount (see picture) you can place the mic in three positions, fully forward works best for me as it doesn’t get in the way when looking through the viewfinder. This is not an expensive mic so don't expect studio quality sound, just an improvement over the built in mic in directionality and eliminating wind and focusing noise.I didn’t get the “Dead Cat” originally but found that the foam cover doesn’t do much in anything more than a light breeze, get them both at once if it’s cheaper, overall a good piece of kit.*
That's a VERY good comparison. Thanks! You might possibly think about adding a text info over the video about which particular mic is being used so it's easier to compare and skip from one sample to the other.
@@iComplainer Maybe this is a dumb question but aren't cards just to link to another video, playlist, etc? I don't see anything in there that would help in this scenario
The video MICRO does NOT pick up more background noise compared to the PRO, what you are hearing is the OVERALL volume or GAIN of the MICRO is LOUDER, if you DOWNLOAD this video and match their VOLUME you will see the background noise is identical, the video mic PRO is lower so therefore it SEEMS that the BG noise is low, but if you turn it up to match the micro it would be identical
I will be the first to admit, this video was a while ago, the levels didn't match up, etc. It could have been done much better to keep things even throughout. BUT the pro allows you to do a 20 decibel gain and dial down your camera audio quite a bit, which bypasses the camera pre-amps, which for most cameras are notoriously bad and add noticeable hiss. I haven't watched this in forever, I don't know what I said in it at this point, but that is the main draw of the pro, perhaps I didn't use the right words to explain that.
I want the videomicro to be better so bad but I do notice that it picks up more of the room reverbration which is easiest to hear at the first test scene. Thank you for this video
micro sounds much better. AND, you could add a separate preamp, such as an inexpensive and highly rated sarasonic and have more controls and even better sound than the pro.
As a sound engineer, I'm really surprised with this comparison. The Videomicro has way better quality in the voice tone, and that was really unexpected. The Pro has a better isolation of surroundings, which is desirable in a lot of filming situations, but it sacrifices frequencies in the process. For that matter, I could probably do a better job in many cases with the Videomicro and Pro Tools for audio post. Even so, I think I would get both and use the Pro only when I'm worried about background noise that will be hard to isolate in post. The Pro is also way better at large distance than the Videomicro.
This is interesting to hear. This video is old and was not done too well, I'll be the first to admit it, but I like to think my videos have gotten significantly better as time has gone on. In any case, It's cool to hear your thoughts coming from an audio background. Even with my less detailed knowledge of audio I was surprised that the micro actually held up in comparison, considering it is much cheaper
Totally agree. He said in the video that the “pro” is better, but not for me, voice tones are better in micro version. Is not “pro” because don’t have the +20db and the isolation, but just changing the camera settings and putting a dead cat on it, the micro have better tones for me too and is also cheaper. Peace out ✌🏼
Great comparison video. The videomic pro seems to pick up less background sounds but I think there are situations where it's nice to have a little bit of the background sounds for ambience. So I think having both would be ideal :)
I personally think the pro is worth it. HOWEVER, in your scenario it really depends on what other equipment you need to budget for. If saving the money on a pro allows you to get something better in another area it may be worth it. The videomic pro and micro are good mics to have but they aren't something I would consistently use (as a main source) outside of ambient audio or if you do vlogging
It really always depends on the scenario. But for any kind of talking (whether myself or someone else) we are using a lav or a boom. The on camera mic will suffice for some "non professional" stuff I'd say but I wouldn't want to rely on it for a main source for anything important. Different tools for different jobs!
I know someone else brought that up a while ago so I apologize for not doing that. I have another mic review coming this week and already have some titles in with the mic being used!
The 15 level makes the Micro sound louder than the others - and so of course the noise gets louder too. So the input level should probably have been set a little lower for a fair comparison. Surprisingly to me the Micro has a fuller and richer sound than the Pro - I think it simply sounds better in this test.
Fair enough, I happen to disagree, barely on the sound, but for me the option to have that gain on the pro to avoid using the camera preamps is worth it. But again, every situation is different. The Micro (as you can tell) is still a solid little mic! I did not get the level correct, but I wasn't too far off. I was trying to just line up my levels on screen.
I'm with you, WCU - the pro is cleaner and more detailed. That said, I use a videomicro a fair bit, and it often surprises me. Love its size and the fact it comes with a dead cat. For the price, it's remarkable.
I think that with the prize of the Videomicro, its a huge value for money. Its better than the videomic Go. With the micro connected in the zoom h1,it surely will be much way better than the camera pre-amp. Thank for this video!
No problem! Yes, the micro, while certainly not the best option on the market, if you are looking to save some money is still a good upgrade from on camera
I'm getting a micro just because bang for the buck you can't beat it. I'll probably upgrade to a pro at some point, but for $80 AUD it's amazing I think.
And if you know about recording audio through a dslr (for ambient, none of our main audio for professional work is through this) then you want to avoid the camera amps as much as possible, since they are usually garbage. Thus, you take advantage of the mic gain levels and get cleaner audio from the start....
The micro, while a huge upgrade from an on board mic, is not as good as the pro. Now, is the pro worth the extra money? That's a personal preference, and everyone's situation is different. However, the micro is certainly not objectively better than the pro.
JustBeinEmily look up mic reviews from DSLR video shooter. His videos are absolutely amazing. There’s one where he does four different rode mics. You really hear the difference.

Thanks! That's a great idea! I probably won't go back in and fix this one but for anything moving forward I will definitely try to remember!
@@BobbyBurns But you could easily add this with youtube cards. Please.
@@iComplainer Maybe this is a dumb question but aren't cards just to link to another video, playlist, etc? I don't see anything in there that would help in this scenario
Get the VideoMicro + Audacity (Free) and just use filters there to get the audio sounding better. Save yourself $200+.
Ideally I'd have both, as well as the Wireless GO to have options based on the situation/setting.

Thanks. Was wondering about the background noise thing on both mics. What about wind noise with the fuzzy cats on?

You missed a cut from 5:00 to 5:25 - made me smile though. :-) Thanks for making this video, it was really helpful!
3:43 - So, the Rode Pro really increases exposure, huh? :-)
Haha yah it's a crazy new feature!
Cool vid. Very good comparison. I will get the Videomicro - best for my needs. Also, the pro is seriously expensive here in South Africa.
Ah yah I could see that. The micro is a huge upgrade and still a very solid mic! Enjoy!
I want the videomicro to be better so bad but I do notice that it picks up more of the room reverbration which is easiest to hear at the first test scene. Thank you for this video
Im using Videomicro and im happy with it cuz of the prize and I can use my gimbal with it at the same time
micro sounds much better.
AND, you could add a separate preamp, such as an inexpensive and highly rated sarasonic and have more controls and even better sound than the pro.
This is a good point here
The micro is amazing... unbeatable for the money id say.
Definitely an argument to be made there. It's a great mic for the price!

graphics/text really would've helped :) great review!
I found a videomic pro on sale for 160 dollars. Do u think it's worth the buying over videomicro? I still need budget to buy other equipments

Bobby Burns I'm very curious in what your main audio recording equipment is? What's ur setup

should have has a call out graphic stating which mic you were on as you switched between them
I know someone else brought that up a while ago so I apologize for not doing that. I have another mic review coming this week and already have some titles in with the mic being used!

Lau Bjerno Does it come with a deadcat and a foam windshield? Or did you mean the foam windshield?
seems like a big portion of the quality depends on the settings in the camera. Thanks for the info!
Can i connect the micro to the canon g7x mark 2 with an adpater.will the sound work??.because it has a micro usb port
I'm not sure if that will work. I have only ever used cameras that have a mic / a 1/8 inch jack. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
Petereviews2 did you conect the mic on the canon g7? does work ?
The Micro sounds much better
Your pocket are telling you lies
Microphone RODE VideoMicro works on a laptop?
Сергей Сморовоз You need an SC4 adaptor :)
did it include post processing ?
Did you have the deadcat on the videomicro??
Hey, yes I did
I think that with the prize of the Videomicro, its a huge value for money. Its better than the videomic Go.

Hey! This was shot with a Sony a7s2. Thanks for watching!
I'm getting a micro just because bang for the buck you can't beat it. I'll probably upgrade to a pro at some point, but for $80 AUD it's amazing I think.
Agreed, if you are looking for best bang for your buck the micro is a great upgrade
Good review. I will end up getting a pro. I didn't get one because I am afraid I'll forget to turn it on or off.
Haha I have definitely done that, which is certainly a downside, but also necessary
I agree with you the videomicpro is better then the videomicro .
damnnnn that difference with the cam itself, oh my
Yah you really don't notice it until it's side by side but it's a crazy big difference!
if u know anything about recordings u would know you can record at a regular level. and cancel background noise and raise the levels using a DAW.
And if you know about recording audio through a dslr (for ambient, none of our main audio for professional work is through this) then you want to avoid the camera amps as much as possible, since they are usually garbage. Thus, you take advantage of the mic gain levels and get cleaner audio from the start....
The micro sound much more natural
Make an update video when you start booming the mics rather than mounting them on your camera.
I don't see a scenario where this would be used on a boom. You would want to use a proper mic for that, and these are built to be on camera
Bobby Burns could be better with zoom h one
True it would be better plugger into a zoom h1, but again, that's not really how most are using these mics, so that's not the test I wanted to do.
exposure ?
The RØDE VideoMic Pro wins! For sure
thank you s much.
Lol who thought it was the Bobby Burns from Brand Sins? I just got the video micro!
The video micro sounds better to me, especially in the distance test
With I had both these mics still. Would love to re-evaluate with a few others involved so I could monitor better
i think that the micro is MUCH better
not trying to save money because you should never compromise on sound
but seriously its a no-brainer
The micro, while a huge upgrade from an on board mic, is not as good as the pro. Now, is the pro worth the extra money? That's a personal preference, and everyone's situation is different. However, the micro is certainly not objectively better than the pro.
Have you gotten the videomicro? Would love to see a review
*video mic
I will put one together for the pro sometime.
JustBeinEmily look up mic reviews from DSLR video shooter. His videos are absolutely amazing. There’s one where he does four different rode mics. You really hear the difference.
I can hear a diffrence but i think both are really good
Agreed!
you can tell that the videomic pro has a much more gentle sound than the videomicro
Thank you
For what I'm going to be doing, I am going to buy the videomicro. You can't beat its price!
Agreed its a great upgrade at that price!
At least you could adjust your exposure outside..
