I used to love Carl Lewis as a kid, thinking Ben Johnson was the bad guy.
Now I'm older, and I see how Carl conducted himself, how he celebrated and blamed other factors when he lost, how he celebrated, I realised,.... he was a tool.
Someone like Calvin Smith, now he was a class guy, much more a role model.

I hear what yer saying about Calvin Smith but its competition.
They do things to get a psychological edge & Lewis was a competitor.
Look how he behaved n compare it to Maurice Greene or Dwain Chambers n ask yerself, was Lewis really a tool or was he just a high quality competitor ?

Lewis had Leo rising, meaning he felt compelled to grab the spotlight. Calvin Smith almost certainly had a different ascendant. As a neutral viewer, I don't mind the Leo theatrics, it makes for better television. And is probably why even today people look up Carl Lewis videos but not Calvin Smith ones.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, although in my case I've never really liked Carl despite his achievements. He was the Barry Bonds of T&F sprinting obviously b/4 Bonds gained prominence in MLB. Awesome talent but was a polarizing condescendingly arrogant personality. Calvin Smith and Robson Da Silva (who didn't run in this particular race but who did run in the 1988 Olympic 100m final) were truly two class guys who played by the rules, competed cleanly, and didn't take PED's and were humble and gracious. The fact that they went as far as they did in their careers is a testament to how truly classy these guys were. The psychological edge that some on this post allude to was in the case of both Lewis and Johnson chemically induced. Not so for Smith and Da Silva. Also, it should be noted that at 11:35 of this video Johnson's right foot is shown clearly touching the line of Lewis' lane and should have been disqualified.

@@crismaracana2824 There are no line infringements in the 100 meters, because you can't shorten the distance to travel by stepping outside your lane on a straight. Only if you hinder another athlete you can get disqualified, but that clearly wasn't the case here. Even in the 200m and the 400m you CAN step on the outside lane, just not the inside lane.

Couldnt agree more . Lewis when he was winning was a narcissistic tool . When he was losing he would blame anything from the track to the spectators .

9:86 while on a vegan diet taking nothing more serious than cough medicine as a PED.
How good would Carl Lewis have been if he got on the dianobol like Linford Christie or the stanozol like Ben Johns ?
    The heavy anabolics.
Glad he got the 100m world record but he deserved the long jump world record more than anyone in history. 11 years unbeaten & he has something like the 20 biggest jumps outa the top 30 all time.
CarL Lewis was a special one n most of all he was a great competitor.

Yeah vegan diet at age of 30 makes you break world records and also a lot faster than eating meat in your 20s and that cough medicine was found at Deloach's and 2 other athletes urine samples during the US trials 1988 as well. I guess Lewis, DeLoach and the rest they all suffered from the same "cold" huh? Lmao. 😂😂

Carl Lewis did not become a vegan before 1990-1991, so here he still ate meat.
And as a vegan he "only broke 1 personal record - 100 metres in 9.86 = world record. Yet, as a vegan, he delivered the long jump series in history.
