    When you wondered about hearing this when you’re young, I had to laugh. This came out in 1974 when I was 16. They played the first part on the radio one morning and we thought it was funny. My brother, who was 17, bought it a few days later. Just imagine how much less I had seen and heard when I was 16 than you did when you were 16, and you might have an idea how much we were freaked out by this. Over the next few weeks, every time my parents weren’t home, about a dozen of our friends gathered in our basement and listened to this album repeatedly (and lit up a few). Then we got his previous album, Overnight Sensation, and I was hooked.
    50 years later, Zappa still surprises me. I was very lucky to have seen three shows on this tour. Surprisingly, there were two outstanding bass players in this band, Patrick O’Hearn and Arthur Barrow,
    Great reaction, with some really thoughtful insights. . I’d imagine it’s hard to gather your thoughts after hearing this for the first time. Frank’s music seems to resonate better with the younger generations than it did with mine. I hope you do more Zappa reviews.

    I saw Zappa at Ithaca College in January 1975-. He was sick; coming down with the flu. You could tell he felt bad. Still he pressed on and put on a show equally as good as this. At one point of the show he paused and said Ruth Underwood his percussionist had attended Ithaca College school of music. He gave her a lot of solo air time that night. Later during one of her solos he paused again and said ( and I still remember the quote) "I wonder if Ruth is thinking 'I wonder what would have happened if I graduated from here' ". The crowd went crazy and she went wild. All of his solos, he would sit on a milk crate with his back against an amp but gave it his all. His next album One Size Fits All had the songs Inca Roads and Pojama People. There was conjecture that he read the book Chariots of the Gods while he was recovering from the flu while resting on his couch and thus the inspiration for Inca Roads. My favorite FZ songs are Cheepnis and Muffin Man.

    Frank Zappa was a staggering intellectual genius extraordinaire. He began composing orchestrated music at the age of 14. The guy wrote in every genre possible. After you've listened to Zappa, there is nothing else. He only lived to 52, but wrote 62 studio albums. He was always messing with his songs. just listen to the Yellow Snow Suite He never plays it the same way twice. The hardest working man in showbiz.

    The Maestro. The one and only time I got to see him live he spent half the night with his back to us, conducting his band. The other half he would wander over to a rack of guitars, plug one in, and play a 10 minute, face melting solo. It was a great night.

    Zappa wrote all of the lyrics and music for every piece of his band, for every song. None of it is improvised except for his guitar solos.

    This was from the "Apostrophe" album, where the performance is "Tight". You need to listen to the entire album. Every song is completely different and great in it's own way. "Overnite Sensation" was recorded around the same time and were made to fulfill his Contract with Warner Brothers. I have been listening to Frank since his "Freak Out" album at the end of 1966. Frank's passing in the early 90's was such a tragedy...the advances in computers and Audio Technology , wiuld have finally allowed Zappa to producevwhat was in his head. His work with the Synclavier in the Jazz From Hell album, hinted at this direction, of tempos and sounds that no musician made of Flesh and Bone could play. We miss you Frank!

    You are absolutely correct. The first time I saw Frank live I was 12 years old in 1975 and I did not understand in that moment that he really was the goat. As I listened to more music and other artists, I quickly realize how profound he was as a musician, composer, and thinker. There are still only a couple of artist I can think of that work on this level. Thanks for doing this!

    Great catch! Even in all that planned chaos, most is written and Zappa is following his own strict and mad red line and the band really has to be on edge to be able to follow that madmans mind

    FLAWD, THIS WAS PRETTY TYPICAL OF WHAT YOU COULD EXPECT IF YOU ATTENDED A FRANK ZAPPA CONCERT IN THE 70S, EARLY 80S, WHICH IS THE TIME THAT I SAW AT LEAST A HALF A DOZEN ZAPPA SHOWS!!!
    YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON SOME SORT OF CRAZY ANTICS GOING ON!!! FRANK ZAPPA WAS ONE OF A KIND AS AN ARTIST, AS A MUSICIAN, AS AN INDIVIDUAL!! THEY DEFINITELY BROKE THE MOLD WHEN FRANK WAS CREATED!!!❤❤😅

    A first-time-ever listen to FZ can be rough, he's got a lot of very *different* stuff. I love that you started with live concert work, ~~~my suggestion for a follow-up is the live version of Zoot Allures, the show-opener at a 1984 NYC show, that's the first tune in the concert film "Does Humor Belong In Music?"

  • @MadScientistMikeOfficial
    @MadScientistMikeOfficial 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Frank was a composer, he would write all the music out on sheets and give each member the parts top memorize. He was an odd one, he hated drugs for example, despite this being the sort of music people on drugs would love lol. I heard Lowell George was in his band when he wrote "Willin'" {check out the Little Feat song, his band after Zappa} it's a classic. Frank told him if he likes weed he ought to start his own band, so he did.

  • @jamomo1371
    @jamomo1371 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    12:40 "it's probably a lot of work."
    Lol, to say the least. Zappa would rehearse his band (which he changed about every year) for 8 hours a day, six days a week, for 4-6 weeks straight before a tour.

  • @Grithron2
    @Grithron2 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think this lyric was inspired by a real dream - hence the shifting between protagonists, and the repositioning of situations - but of course it has Frank's usual curses on organised religion (all that symbolic masturbation and fellation), and seemingly random references to cartoons (fur trapper out of Porky Pig?) and TV commercials (the "your highness" bit). Incidentally, frozen dog piss is not very "deadly", as it's been used in medicine and as an antiseptic. (Frozen dog shit is another matter entirely!).
    If you've ever heard the studio version you'll know that this suite had evolved quite a bit since 1973-4 - in the process, it imported yet more musical material from its infamous sibling-song Rollo (which technically predates it)
    - AND -
    If the Flawd folks feel like digging deeper into the Passaic 1978 concert footage - two obvious highlights are Village Of The Sun (which besides being Ike Willis's big vocal moment has, on this occasion, some extended keyboard jamming) and Black Napkins (one of the longest renditions of that: massive guitar/drum battle and a six-string-bass solo too).

    Wow, superb reaction. He truly was the GOAT. It takes a life long study. He was a composer who could also laugh at himself (and others). The humor is as great as his musical ability. He has written big band jazz, doowop stuff, modern classic, avantgarde, rock, pop, blues, music hall, and no musical genre was beneath him. He loved everyting, and he mocked everything at the same time.

      zappa ? lol yuck.,,such immature jokes , I am sure 4th graders get a laugh out of his dull humor. ....most over rated , cynical, absurd , annoying "artist " ever...there is good reason he made over 100 records and has zero platinum albums and barely a million sales...lol he needed his daughter to sing "valley girl" for his biggest "hit".....lol "fer sher".... with so many horrible, unlistenable albums , zappa obviously chose "quantity over quality" . no matter what his "genius" fans say, Zappa put out ALOT of bad music...
