    Duchess of Gloucester: Jane Lapotaire
    Director: Gregory Doran
Richard is King. A monarch ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role of 'a definitive production of a great play' (Daily Mail).
    What the press said:
''David Tennant gives a bravado performance of a multi-layered, complex and intelligent medieval king in Shakespeare's masterful history play.'' The Daily Express
''Gregory Doran's exceptional production is a rousing triumph.''The Observer
''Michael Pennington is little short of magnificent as John of Gaunt.'' The Daily Telegraph
Recorded live at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre,
    Stratford-upon-Avon, November 2013.

I will be very grateful if someone who has either watched the play or seen the dvd could explain the ending to me. *spoilers* It is so different from the original text that I simply did not get the reason behind the assasination and the motive that prompted the assasin. help ?

+Amrita Sengupta ~ *Spoiler* The only difference is they changed who the killer was. This way made sense to me. Aumerle wanted to get in the new king's good graces after all Richard's other supporters were beheaded. It gives meaning to the line "Your mother well hath prayed, and prove you true." Rather than some random guy interpreting his words "Have I no friend will rid me of this living fear?" as a desire for Richard to be murdered, there is an implicit instruction to Aumerle to show his loyalty and he did it by killing Richard. Doran (and others) theorizes that Shakespeare changed the killer to Exton for political reasons and it was meant to be Aumerle all along. As it is, he reportedly got into some trouble with the Queen.

sallyatticum so all his affection toward Richard was what ? Pretention ? He was the only person aside from the queen I suppose that Richard had any real affection for. And throughout the play he was only one who could get through to the king's stubborn heart. Amrl even plotted a coup against Henry 4. Dont you think it is weird that he would suddenly develop a sense of loyalty toward Henry and assisinate Richard ? Help.

+Amrita Sengupta I think it was less a sense of loyalty than that he was saving his own life. But then, I think he always had divided loyalties. If you will remember, he also angered Richard by seeing Bolingbrook off. That could've been interpreted as loyalty to Bolingbrook. He had to appease Richard. I think the kiss is less a sign of true affection than a sudden moment of unaccustomed vulnerability. And the realization by Richard that he actually is human and has no choice but to give himself up. No angels are going to save him.

+Amrita Sengupta ~ BTW, Doran is not the first to make this change.... It is a theory many people hold.

Thank you so much for the explanation. :) They did not change that in hollow crown I suppose? Have not seen it though. I would have prefered the ending as was in the text but then I guess this one makes Richard even more of a tragic character. Doran may have wanted that for DT's Richard. That was actually a heartbreakingly brilliant move.

A static, unpromising beginning. The litigants, seen from behind, lack presence (and audibility). Richard seems not to know what to do with his body, wiggling around rather than standing regally still. His coy tone captures the character, but there's no reaction from the bystanders so it falls flat.
