This is the kind of musical performance that many young drummers, including a much younger ME, might see and think, “He’s not playing anything interesting.”, while older drummers see reflections of Krupa, Morello, Elvin, Tony, and Philly Joe, among others, in every phrase. There’s so much delicate artistry going on here that it’s astounding.
You are so right. He sounds beautiful. Jeff Hamilton really finds a groove and locks in on precisely what sounds, rhythms, and timing of accents need to be heard by the audience. So musically expressive and dimensional.
Part of virtuosity is relatability, which is a step above mere technical prowess. That's why I'm not a huge fan of Be-Bop and some jazz, even though I recognize how technically proficient (some of) the musicians are who play it. If it's not evocative... If it doesn't make you want to tap your foot... how good is it, really?
I was gonna say, with Jeff, I always come away with, this cat is one of the most MUSICAL drummers! Not afraid of simple visions, very little peacocking, while transmitting some wisdom.
Brilliant! This takes me back 55 years, to Singapore, when, as a naive teen, I was taken to a nightclub where there was an Af-Am (we called them Negros or Black then - with no disrespect) jazz band whose name I've long forgotten. The highlight of the night was the drum solo that lasted about 10 minutes while the rest of the players walked off the stage (cf. Ginger Baker and The Toad at the Royal Albert Hall).
Jeff never ceases to amaze me with such musical drumming and hand technique , he gets better every time I see him play ! he is truly an inspiration and is improving with time always , still the man !
I'm a number 1 Caravan fan. I listened to another version of Caravan also by Jeff Hamilton a few years back and it was superb, but this one would have made Ellington and Tizol go green! Excellent!
It shows what a good drummer can do with a small basic kit, like the old style great drummers from yesteryear. They don’t require the big massive drum sets. Much easier to carry around and set up, too.
This is where there is no difference between man and instrument...it is one giant whole. No sticks, no GIANT SIZED DRUM SET UP. It is just being ONE with the UNIVERSE !
Proof that you don't need fancy, exotic wood for great sounding drums. Remo doesn't use real wood for their shells it's some kind of composite or mdf (medium density fiberboard) I believe.
Word to Sir Paul: next time someone like this guy suggests brushes for a song . . . mmmmmaybe try getting over yourself long enough to consider that HE JUST MIGHT KNOW! . . . Dude’s obviously a master, going all Papa Jo up in here, his audience is clapping along-it can only be RESPECTED!
Great to see top drummers not hiding behind massive kits and a million cymbals. I wonder how those drummers would go with a small, basic 4 piece kit like this.
Love to know the sizes looks like 16 bass drum .does he use a bass drum riser so the pedal hits central to the skin or no riser? And are they still making remo kits
Yes, it really looks like a 16 bass drum but it is a 18" B.D . I' m sorry , I can't tell if he hits in the middle or not. I've not found this Kit on Remo website, but there are some to be sell. For exemple: shop.michaellawrences.co.uk/remo-4-piece-drum-kit-gold-crown-362-p.asp
Normally I hate drum solos. They usually have nothing to do with the song they are interrupting. But this is the exception. As are solos by morello, Antonio Sanchez, dafnis prieto and steve gadd
It’s the talent of the drummer that counts...not the size of the kit...this is a pretty small kit. Not keen on the hand playing however...leave that to bongos, although he does it well.

Jeff Hamilton ... the gentle giant of drumming.
This guy makes more melodic and musical sense with his soloing than anyone I've heard .
You are so right. He sounds beautiful. Jeff Hamilton really finds a groove and locks in on precisely what sounds, rhythms, and timing of accents need to be heard by the audience. So musically expressive and dimensional.

The way he hit that china so gently near the beginning (at 1:05) was awesome!
What can young drummers learn from this? A lot!!!!!! GREATNESS!
Spectacular!!! Mr.Hamilton!! Thank you.
This is not a man playing drums; this is a man playing music.
Right on.
His style is to compare with Jo Jones
I was gonna say, with Jeff, I always come away with, this cat is one of the most MUSICAL drummers! Not afraid of simple visions, very little peacocking, while transmitting some wisdom.

yes the style is indeed a successor to that of joe jones but also the big sid cutlet.
I got a lesson from this man. He is the real deal.

I could listen to that all day.
Jeff never ceases to amaze me with such musical drumming and hand technique , he gets better every time I see him play ! he is truly an inspiration and is improving with time always , still the man !
One of the best jazz drummers of all time its that simple
Dammmmm!!!!!!! 🤯
The one and only Jeff Hamilton, making the drums sing.
I'm a number 1 Caravan fan. I listened to another version of Caravan also by Jeff Hamilton a few years back and it was superb, but this one would have made Ellington and Tizol go green! Excellent!
Never seen or heard of this guy... Fantastic to say the least!!!
A true master. Swing, technique and elegance. Thanks for sharing.
That! Was amazing!🥁👍😃
Thank You, I´ve been there at one of yiur concerts in Lincoln Center in February this year.
6:40. Bell with a wedding ring. Lol didn't see that coming.
Very interesting style of playing! Jazz sounds so different as other drumming styles especially jeff's style.

Hands Solo is my favorite jazz drummer.

Excellent
Damn, I waited so many years before watching this video!!
Amazingly musical drummer. Do I hear a bit of influence from Jo Jones and Joe Morello?
I think so, every drummer has been influenced by another and so on...endless!
A wonderful and amazing drummer.
Love watching him playing with brushes...
The great Jeff Hamilton!

fantastic!
Genius!
Why do I get the feeling even the way I tie my shoes pales in comparison to the way JH does it?
Great!!!
Hypnotic !
Amazing
Le doy mil veces like a este baterista!!!! /// I give a thousand likes to this drummer!!!!
Crazy good? Make sure you find the melody and then you'll be blown away.
This man is a music architect.
A master
No ego in his playing. he just let's it cook
drum solos can be hard to listen too
Started out great just cant listen that long

4:12… yeah I’d cheer to holy that was smooth
How good is John Goodman on drums?! I had no idea...
the next video features roseanne barr eating an entire drum set...
qué maravillaaaaaaaaAAAAA
This is where there is no difference between man and instrument...it is one giant whole. No sticks, no GIANT SIZED DRUM SET UP. It is just being ONE with the UNIVERSE !
HAMMER TIME!
Apart from Jeff and Louie Bellson, there weren’t that many name drummers using Remo drums.
Carl Palmer used them at one time. It was at an Emerson, Lake, and Palmer reunion in the early 90s if memory serves.
Wooooow

What is he quoting from 1:44 to 1:48? I know I've heard a thousand times but I can't place the name.
What sizes are the drums.. looks very portable and highly tuned.
WOW!
what a scream!
Coś wspaniałego. 👍
Jeff jest świetny!!!

Gilaa!
What drum dimensions.
very good, just using the Brazilian rhythm, "samba" which for Brazilians is something common.
Great to see top drummers not hiding behind massive kits and a million cymbals.
I wonder how those drummers would go with a small, basic 4 piece kit like this.
Portnoy does fine
Same with minneman, bozzio, peart, beuford, gadd, Mayer etc
So what you're saying is, the fewer the toms, the better the drummer.
Amazing, just imagine if they had mic'd up the kick. Almost inaudible
Sorry, I did my best....
Nice little kit to carry around.
Wouldn’t need a roadie.. 🙂
Impressionnant et de plus en costard 😂

Hello, I think it was 14"-12-14-18. Kit REMO.
Normally I hate drum solos. They usually have nothing to do with the song they are interrupting. But this is the exception. As are solos by morello, Antonio Sanchez, dafnis prieto and steve gadd
Handmade samba !
Sandy Nelson on Jazz steroids. Brilliant playing
“Accomplished “
Came for caravan, but I wasn’t disappointed nonetheless
This is efin music.
Pero nunca sonó Caravan!
it seems to me that he is well influenced by Brazilian drummers (sensational)) Especially the drummer (Kiko Freitas)
Samba!
Size doesn’t matter...with drums. 😊
Caravan
Elvin Jones said you have to take 20 different sounds from your cymbal to consider yourself a good drummer. Well I think it's True.
yes !!
wHY tHE FUCK ARE PEOPLE CLAPPING
A small 4 piece kit with no muffling...just talent.
You don’t a million drums and cymbals
It’s the talent of the drummer that counts...not the size of the kit...this is a pretty small kit.
Not keen on the hand playing however...leave that to bongos, although he does it well.
Very worked out drumming fearing no pain.
Not quite my tempo
A basic 4 piece kit and normal cymbals...
Today’s modern should take note.
Plenty of phenomenal drummers with huge kits
