The smart thing to do would be to bring 2 more high back end arms even if Hendriks was healthy and lights out. Guys like Minter and Tanner Scott should be on their radar.
I knew Hendrinks has been hurt and I knew he was a previous all star. What I did not know, until you guided me to research it further by saying 2022 was his last full season - is that he has only pitched five games in 2023. So in essence, we have a pitcher who has been hurt and barely pitched in two seasons. Something else I just learned - he’s 35 years old. This is really ridiculous. As a reclamation project - fine. Worth a shot. Depending on this guy to be your closer in 2025? There better be a back up plan.
Seeing Hendricks lose his temper and curse extremely loudly during his rehab appearance in Portland gives me a bad feeling. One fan was so upset he yelled from the stands "Stop blaming the umpire." He is an embarrassment to the organization.
When Liam Hendriks first came over everyone was worried about his language on the mound. Since then, he has won and been nominated for the Roberto Clemente award for his work in the community of every single team he has been apart of including being nominated for the Red Sox this year. he has worked tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights, cancer awareness and fundraising , having beaten cancer himself, and other causes along the way. There’s a lot to talk about with Liam but one thing that isn’t a conversation is that he is absolutely in no way an embarrassment to this organization. Do some research please.
@@seanodonnell6689As a Browns fan...DeShaun Watson is an embarrassment to an organization! Hendriks swearing isn't an embarrassment.....should he swear? No, but it happens to all of us
@@traci635we don’t all swear but I know what you mean. The bigger problem with his time in Portland is that as a small minor league park, it’s touted as a family friendly environment. He is hardly family friendly. There seems to be no awareness by him of his environment. I get his career is on the line. But there needs to be some respect towards the families that take their children to the park. You can literally hear him from every seat in the park. He just needs to stop screaming and he’ll be fine
Exactly. Why are we at all expecting anyone close to what he was at his peak. His age and time removed from pitching dominantly make this a reclamation project hail Mary type thing and nothing more. Like grabbing Paxton last year (not talking about this year). We need an actual closer next year to fill in for Jansen, assuming he walks.
Here is an idea. After the season is over maybe do one more stream session and people throw our trade deals for discussion. Like would you trade Casas to Seattle for Kirby or Gilbert, move Raffy to first, Campbell at third, Grissom at second?
shutting Hendricks down now was the absolute right thing to do. They don't need him to get hurt and possibly miss some of next season just to see what they are getting with him for next year. When they signed him and him getting hurt, they expected to not see him for the whole year, so him coming back so fast may not have been such a great thing to do. The Sox need to be smart get a 1A and 1B closer type for the pen. Hendricks could fill either one of those roles, but they need to get good reliable players brought in here whether he is lights out now or not. The off season could help or hurt him so if he did come back for the final week or two and show he is lights out, he could then continue to rehab in offseason and get hurt again or he may lose something. Bullpen arms are one of the trickiest things to figure out from year to year, especially with any player coming back from an injury. If I am the Sox, I play this like we don't have him on the team, build a bullpen that is as good as you can get, if he shows you the certainty that he is back to normal or close it is a bonus, if he can't then you still have a decent bullpen because you went by this process.
In addition to A.J. Minter the Sox should look at Tanner Scott (lefty) as Bernadino regressed this year. Those two with a healthy Hendricks and steps forward by Slaten and Kelly would be a solid backend of the bullpen.
What are your thoughts about Bernadino, Winckowski, Weissert? They all have had moments where they have looked solid, and moments where the wheels have come off. Isaiah Campbell even worse. Do we keep these guys around? Clear the spots for other arms?
When Hendricks was first signed there was hope he would contribute in 24. When I heard his velocity was really down during rehab assignments my hope definitely tempered. This offense imploded and it’s frustrating and scary for me.
I don't think it's a big deal if Hendricks doesn't pitch this season it would be helpful but not crucial. I'm guessing and hoping he's available in 2025! We'll see
Good analysis Corbin. I still think that we should resign Pivetta for the bullpen. The guy knows how to strike out people and he could be very effective there as long as he knows how to loosen up quickly.
Hopefully a lot of serious thought will be put in the bullpen rebuild for 2025. In many ways I think we’ll see a very different team. At least, a lot a questions marks. It makes for, hopefully again, an interesting off season.
@@redseatradioDon't count on it with Henry. Breslow will have to get very creative with whatever smaller budget Henry gives him. There's a reason they want to go with all these young guys. They cost less, bottom line. That's fine, but you have to mix in vets too or you get what you've seen this year. Plus you have to have backup plans for the inevitable injuries, especially with this team. If he spends some money for a proven young ace and maybe another proven reliable starter (preferably at least one of them left-handed) and a few quality proven healthy bullpen arms, they may be a playoff team by 2026. There's an overload of minor league talent that are going to be blocked at the major league level, so why not sell high on a few and get some top level pitching in return and then PAY THEM before they go somewhere else. That's where Henry HAS to let Breslow do his job without ridiculous salary barriers or they're just wasting prime years for guys like Devers, Casas, Duran, etc and they'll continue to be a middle of the pack type team. The east is no longer NY and Boston. Baltimore and TB (even though this was a down year for them) are both perennial contenders as well as NY. They have to keep up or it's going to be 3rd, 4th and last place finishes. Imagine the old Red Sox being ok with just competing for a second or third wild card? That's totally John Henry's fault. He knows what it takes to win. He's brought four rings to Boston. I don't expect him nor want him to spend crazy money like the Dodgers, Mets or Yankees, but spend to the tax apron at least. They're not the Rays or A's for crying out loud. They're supposed to be the Boston Red Sox.
They will have time to see 2 other returning guys, Fulmer and Whitlock during the off season and spring to figure those guys out. They will need to add more guys through free agency or from the farm. Hoping Guerrero continues to get outs this year, so he can step up next year.
Our bullpen is worse then the Rockies bullpen???😮 oh man! I knew our guys were struggling, but to be worse then Colorado? OUCH! Hendriks is a key piece for next season, but man I want our guys to close out strong! Henry better let Breslow be creative, concerning our bullpen and pitching staff.....our young talent deserves opportunity to win.....
I'm actually not concerned that he will be a good bullpen guy and a great leader what I am concerned about is can he be an elite closer still (remember he's in his mid 30's) he may be a good arm but can he still close that's what I would like to know. He has the mentality but will his stuff play. AJ Minter is a great call and he comps well to what Martin was when we brought him here and even with some up and down I think we can call that one a win just for last year alone. They definitely will need another high leverage reliever hopefully one with at least some closing experience to add to Hendricks but I'm not scared he won't be able to be effective just what his role might be.
He was signed for $10 mil and I highly doubt anyone else wanted him especially at his age. They'll be lucky if he's a decent piece in another lousy bullpen
This is unreal!!! Are we getting punked?? I’ve never seen a bull pen like this?? This is just embrassing! I think the mlb should investigate the Sox’s because they are throwing games!! You can’t be this bad!! It’s impossible to be this bad!!
I don't want to say I told you so, but the injuries to Hendricks and Story had been bad enough to end their 2024 seasons. Story has managed to come back too soon and has not looked good. Hendricks pitched a half dozen games in the minors, though he LOOKED fine, his body said otherwise, because it takes more than a year to return healthy from TJ surgery. He should be fine by ST, like I originally thought.
When Liam Hendriks first came over everyone was worried about his language on the mound. In all honesty, this really wasn't a dumpster dive move. Liam hendriks has been an elite closer for years. This was more of a strategic move that didn't pan out for 2024, but again that was all bonus money what they are really paying for is 2025
Changing the subject: what were u saying about Pivetta? U might want to backtrack that. U don't give his durability enough credit and he's had a couple gems in a row. Probably a better ERA than Bello. He cares, he's fiery and lives to compete. What else we got ? Cmon dude
I think I’m ok with Chris Martin not comming back he wasn’t that splashy for me Jansen going kinda stinks but he’s old so younger arms might benefit the youth movement of the Sox
As i been saying, Quora he's giving away game after game by selectinhg the wrong relievers like Wincosky and Weisser who must be sent them back to double AA, may be Quora has a mental block or something by making the same mistake over an over again, if we count the game the blewed by selecting the worst pitchers is about close the 100 games since the Red Sox fall down and the batting coach he does nothing to improve the batting ability on the players he should be gone to.
The smart thing to do would be to bring 2 more high back end arms even if Hendriks was healthy and lights out. Guys like Minter and Tanner Scott should be on their radar.
No need to rush him back. Use the off-season and spring training to systematically rebuild arm strength.
