First time for me ever… But I agree with Rick 100%. Well done. This is a delightful movie with a lot of heart. From my standpoint, this is one of the best origin story for a superhero movie - especially creating a compelling story for the antagonist.
I just realized that the English names of a lot of languages are the same as the English names of the corresponding people, the Germans, the French, the Russians, the Chinese. Unfortunately that doesn't work for Malayalam. I am a Malayali, not a Malayalam.
The "villain" is played by Guru Somasundaram. Rick is right, guru has been a part of tamil theatre. He has also been a part of some really good movies Jigarthanda, Aranya Kandan, Jai Bhim etc.
if you want to see Guru Somasundram's full range of acting, check out a Tamil film called Joker (not to be mistaken with the DC character) that came out in 2014 where he performed the lead role. It's a dark comedy that pokes fun at bureaucracy
The budget of Minnal Murli was 2.5 million USD, even movies like 'Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya' and 'Student of The Year' had a much higher budget of 11 million USD. I'm not understanding how they pulled this off, creating something so good in such a low budget is incredible. Hats off to the makers of Minnal Murli.
Rick, what you said about a superhero wearing Mundu and it being fascinating for Indian kids reminds me Tovino saying in an interview that he watched the movie with his daughter and now she thinks that her dad can do everything in the world that a superhero can do except flying hehe 🤭 isn't that sweet? ❤
I'm glad you guys loved this movie. The movie was made in such a way that we care more for the villain. Tovino actually wanted to play the villain when heard the story from the director but was forced to play the hero. Best origin story.
My fist Malayalam movie! Watched it with the family, everyone and the kids loveddd it!! So much better than expected and highly agree with the CGI aspect. Indian cinema CGI always makes me 🥴 esp after watching things like marvel and although it wasn’t the best here either, it didn’t take away from the movie at all! Loved the villian 🤩
High budget CGIs are done in India....right from GOT to Marvel movies... everything is outsourced to India. As per as CGI in Indian movies is concerned, it all comes down to the budget of the movie.
So to put things in perspective… this movie was made with a budget of 2.5 million US Dollars when compared to the mammoth budget of Spiderman No Way Home which had a budget of 200 million US Dollars. Hence the visuals is something no one is really talking about .
Love from tamilnadu❤️ really i love this movie and recommended to my frds and parents too... Mostly mollywood do realistic movies but now they also proved they can do fantasy fantastically 🙂.... totally agree Mr.Rick statement about the production level how they utilised with in the budget. I really appreciate the producer Sophia Paul . I hope they got more confident for next sequence. Specially for global audience. Imo, they should focus more for English dubbing.for example like "nobody knows I'm here " the Spanish movie , that didn't feel like other Spanish movie what I watched .
Misssed an important point though, basil(Director) is really creating Universe out of this, joining more plots from his previous works as well, more like Marvel, may be little more like Stephen King, only horror is replaced by day to day simple stuffs. I think some big Bollywood production houses should put money into minnal murali franchise. Dharma production, yrf and Excel entertainment should looks into it. Dharma production did it with Bahubali so I think they should do it with minnal murali as well

There was a 3D fictional movie which was released in malayalam in the 80's called 'My Dear Kuttichathan', it was kind of a superhero film. That movie was for kids. That movie was made without any VFX. VFX was not there.
I just watched the movie. Like you guys I don’t understand Malayalam but completely agree with your thoughts. Accepting budget constraints, it was clever to limit the story to a village. Unlike Hollywood’s penchant for destroying 3/4 of earth to save the other quarter, they kept it to a tight area and let the specifics shine ie music score ( excellent from the 1st shot) writing cinematography and tongue in cheek characterisation.. Enjoyable film overall and wonderfully reviewed
Actually there are a series of upcoming experimental movies from malayalam industry...marakkar and minnal murali are the initial releases..eventhough marakkar was a misfire minnal murali lived up to the expectations ..so expectations are high for the rest... The movies are: Aadujeevitam, empuraan,kaaliyan,kathannar 3d,barroz 3d ,malayankunju ,upachara poorvam gunda jayan and many more...
the score is done by Sushin Shyam. All of the works are just brilliant stuff! You guys must watch Kurup for his dope scores in the movie. I watched it over and over just for the scores! A little bit over the what the film needs but so dope!
As Rick rightly guessed, Guru Somasundaram ofcourse has got theatre background before coming to Tamil movie industry. So no wonder he delivered to his potential in this movie.

Ooh....Rick all the Marvel movies CGI and special effects are done in India. We are pioneers in that. If you go through end credits you will know. All big or small budget CGI is extensively done here.
CGI for Marvel films is done all over the world including WETA (New Zealand) and Skywalker (USA). Not discounting India involvement but not at all exclusive

Josain and Shibu both lost parents at early age bit Josain receives the love of family when he was adopted but Shibu did not. Both gets hit from the lightning but what choices the made with the power separated them. The initial scene of the movie show a poster of Gladiator holding Javeline. (Josain’s dad) Thats how Josain kills Shibu in the end
Yes I liked how the movie shows parallels between the hero and villain. Also the fact that the hero gets rejected by his high school love, and the villain never got to be with her either.
The villain is Guru Somasundara, he is an underatted Legend, watch his movie joker and Aaranya kandam, you would be surprised by the actor without realizing it was him

Malayalam film industry is nothing like Bollywood. Compared to the usual superstar movies of malayalam, this movie with it's team, has had a huge budget, showing that even thus budget was a huge responsibility for them, but in comparison to even the usual bollywood movies, this movies budget is miniscule..
Guru is a phenomenal actor and in the movie too….he steals the show……what range of expressions……I have loved him from his Joker days…..his laughter is so infectious…..

Just a correction Rick, CGI companies in India are actually top notch that the industry here can't afford. Actually the CGI for The Dark Knight, Spiderman and many other Hollywood films were done in Chennai. So technology was never the problem in India, rather it was the budget and the market

I too find that hard to believe the CGI for top notch movies like The Dark Knight and Spiderman were done in Chennai to be honest. I really don't think that's true, when there are so many other CGI companies thay are top class around the world, and with the budget Hollywood movies have there's no reason for them to come to Chennai of all places for CGI. You may not know this but the director basil joseph make many films in like this small kerala village and they all happen in this small universe if you look into this other villages mentioned in the movie you can see that village in another one of his films it's like basilverse
An above average movie from Malayalam cinema. I think if the movie was trimmed 20-30 minutes it could have been more racy. Tbh first 20 minutes was pure boring. After they got hit by the lightening the movie was getting interesting. Minnal Murali is a good example of a movie that gives 50 % importance to the hero and 50 % importance to the the antagonist. Songs are forgettable but the BGM suited the movie well. CGI in climax fight could have been better, but considering the budget scale, it is one of the few weak points you have to accept as the audience.

I was disappointed with Kafaseela Biriyani, though I wanted to like it. The pretentiousness artiness and the forced black humor put me off.

As Rick rightly guessed, Guru Somasundaram ofcourse has got theatre background before coming to Tamil movie industry. So no wonder he delivered to his potential in this movie.

Ooh....Rick all the Marvel movies CGI and special effects are done in India. We are pioneers in that. If you go through end credits you will know. All big or small budget CGI is extensively done here.
CGI for Marvel films is done all over the world including WETA (New Zealand) and Skywalker (USA). Not discounting India involvement but not at all exclusive

Yes I liked how the movie shows parallels between the hero and villain. Also the fact that the hero gets rejected by his high school love, and the villain never got to be with her either.
The villain is Guru Somasundara, he is an underatted Legend, watch his movie joker and Aaranya kandam, you would be surprised by the actor without realizing it was him
He is NOT underrated at all. He is well known and well respected. See his Tamil film Joker.

Malayalam film industry is nothing like Bollywood. Compared to the usual superstar movies of malayalam, this movie with it's team, has had a huge budget, showing that even thus budget was a huge responsibility for them, but in comparison to even the usual bollywood movies, this movies budget is miniscule..

Guru is a phenomenal actor and in the movie too….he steals the show……what range of expressions……I have loved him from his Joker days…..his laughter is so infectious…..

Just a correction Rick, CGI companies in India are actually top notch that the industry here can't afford. Actually the CGI for The Dark Knight, Spiderman and many other Hollywood films were done in Chennai. So technology was never the problem in India, rather it was the budget and the market

You may not know this but the director basil joseph make many films in like this small kerala village and they all happen in this small universe if you look into this other villages mentioned in the movie you can see that village in another one of his films it's like basilverse

An above average movie from Malayalam cinema. I think if the movie was trimmed 20-30 minutes it could have been more racy. Tbh first 20 minutes was pure boring. After they got hit by the lightening the movie was getting interesting. Minnal Murali is a good example of a movie that gives 50 % importance to the hero and 50 % importance to the the antagonist. Songs are forgettable but the BGM suited the movie well. CGI in climax fight could have been better, but considering the budget scale, it is one of the few weak points you have to accept as the audience.
