I've been through every storm from 70mph TS to 155mph Cat 5 in Grand Cayman and can offer this advice for fruit trees if expecting more than 60 mph heavy rain/wind: chop off the banana and papaya plants at waist height (they'll regrow but not fall). One determinant factor in trees falling is how much water precedes or comes with the wind at its peak. Your neighbor's advice for those in the direct path is spot on... trim hard! If trees topple, resurrect them ASAP afterward, reburying the roots to the best of your ability. Chop off as much of the top of the tree as required for you to raise the tree. With damaged roots you need to trim off at least as much leaf as you lost roots. BTW, boiled or steamed green papayas are sweet and go great in chicken soup. We all look forward to your post storm yard tour. All the best Paul!
I’m in the center of the hurricane’s path. I’m with my little guy (dog) who’s afraid of storms but my wife went to Pennsylvania. It’s loud out there, very powerful wind, but I’m watching you and Tom on my phone, and as loud as I can make it to help the little guy with the outside noise. I removed a lot of leaves from my trees to minimize the damage caused by the wind, and since I had to prune my trees in December, I did it today. But it was just outside and I almost flew away, so I doubt my pruning will be affective. Either way, I pray that you all will be safe. I’m out of power. Good luck to all.
Great video and tips, I can also confirm starfruit picked early will eventually ripen like bananas and papaya. I picked a lot yesterday to lighten the tree load. Good luck to all in the storm's path!
Always remove all the leaves off the banana trees and papayas. They will no be destroyed by the wind. The culprit is always the amount of leaves on all trees. If you have to prune the trees in the spring, prune them now to minimize the damage.
I'm West Central Florida. About an hr or less from Tampa. My tree are very young and I'm nervous. It's coming right over Winter Haven. As a nurse I can't leave.

I just hacked my 2 year old trees 40%. It was painful to cut off all that beautiful new growth, but now they should hold up for gusts up to 60mph
