No Black Rookies: Rejected Philly Police Recruits Say System Is Racist | NBC10 Philadelphia

  • In January, the Philadelphia police department's most recent training academy class included no Black cadets. Potential recruits of color told NBC10 of the many obstacles they face despite eagerness to serve their city.

Maya Anderson was denied the chance to enroll in the police academy twice for arbitrary reasons.

According to Philadelphia police statistics, nearly 70% of applicants who show up to orientation to take the reading and agility tests are Black, Hispanic, Asian or other. And 31% of applicants are white.

Yet, in the last year, 71% of recruits who make it into the police academy are white. Only 29% were people of color.

NBC10 investigative reporter Claudia Vargas asks why the decision making process for accepting recruits into the Philadelphia Police Academy is so opaque.

If you're a teenager still in high school of course you have no real work history, or numerous little part time jobs...your 16, 17 18 yrs old.. Ridiculous!!! Her discharge was a uncharacterized discharge,, not a dishonorable discharge. There is a difference!!!!

Yes there's a difference...but there's also a HUGE difference of someone who SERVED and FINISHED their contract compared to some girl who did 4 months and got pregnant IN TRAINING then got the boot...don't claim your a veteran because you decided to get knocked up before you even finish training.

An uncharacterised discharge isn't a dishonorably discharge. It is what it is uncharacterised. Just as "an other than honorable" discharge isn't a dishonorably discharge. One of my major grubs is the services will change an " other than " discharge to an honorable one after 6 - 12 months. She could have gotten a dishonorable one. US owes a recruit and anything done to your physical person is destruction of govt property. I've seen guys get tattoos during AIT training being dishonorably discharged. Depends on how the company or Battalion cmdr words the discharge request.

I applied 5 times for philly police. Passed the test every time I still did not get hired. The 5th time I took the test was in 04 passed that test with a 98. I got deployed to Iraq 2005. I just got back to base and called my dad he said my investigator from the police academy was trying to get a hold of me. I called her she said let me be the first to congratulate you and welcome you to the philadelphia police department. I was excited. She asked me if I could start the academy in July of 05 I explained to her I was in Iraq. She said can you come home for a couple of days I said no I'm in Iraq. She told me to call her when I got back I said we should be home in 5 to 6 more months. I got home I called her she wanted me to come see her so I did and she said because I couldn't come home and start I would have to start the whole process over again. I found out 2 years later that she had lied. I should have been put into the very next class. I'm still not a Philly officer.

I have a clean record and everything then as I contacted him 3 weeks later he tells me I was denied because of an answer on the polygraph and when I asked him what answer they literally flipped the answer that I gave which caused me to be denied. I am of Arabic background and Muslim but I didnt want to think I was being discriminated against in anyway but as I later found out from many people that was probably the reason. The other few white recruits that did everything the same time as me got in with no problem, especially one who had a DUI on his record!

The young lady blames racism for her failure to be accepted by the Cops. The first time, she filled out the forms wrong, not understanding her own discharge from the military, and so she wrote that down wrong. Her mistake, not racism. The second time, she got screwed over by her relative, who she lent her car to years before, and the relative crashed it. That was her car, so was put on her record. She might have been able to correct that, but doesn't appear to have tried. Once again, her record showed the Cops a bad sign, so once again she was rejected for a reason other than racism. Blaming a failure of some kind on racism is not a good idea - it helps you lie to yourself, and avoid facing screw-up after screw-up in your life.

Generation Z has very little interest in law enforcement. Their video games and media don't follow the propaganda that the previous generations believed in that increased recruiting. Nonetheless, this younger generation is going to be very tricky to recruit, so departments need to work these social kinks out now and get innovative. Did anyone stop to question why she was named the driver of the car involved in the accident? I understand that Ms. Anderson owns the car, however unless she actually drove it or her sister produced Ms. Anderson's license to police while claiming to be her, the officer writing the report would not have listed her as the driver. Any officer would have asked for the driver's identification--the driver license number, notice it appears (although blacked out), along with the issuing state and Ms. Anderson's DOB, on the accident report. Something is wrong here and was glossed over by the reporter. Maybe NBC10 should have chosen someone else to profile for this type of story. Not passing on the legitimacy of the argument that hiring bias exists, just saying NBC10 should have done its homework and picked a better candidate to make the case.

This was just bs .We hope to have more us to help make things better. Now we hear they don't want black officers. These struggles are so simple. They want us to do everything equally when we're so far below. We're still clawing to get ahead. Some of us are doing it.But we have to fight for everything.

Philly cops don't get security clearances. It has to do with if you have bad credit they think your more likely to take bribes and take money from people you arrest.

Filled out his app they said sorry you had to many jobs and you had a careless driving infraction on his abstract!! So they are crying about they need cops and they do this.. I would live to find out how many cops have or had shit on there driving abstract and because prolly mommy and daddy are in politics they get hired.
