He does sound like a rough riding New Yorker. In fact, the 2003 TMNT show has to have some of the best choices for VAs for these characters I've ever heard.
In order: 1. Nolan North 3:41 - He's full of angst and rage in the movie, but his voice really suits him well. 2. Greg Abbey 3:04 - Love his tough guy voice! 3. I really like Greg Abbey's Raphael in the 2003 cartoon; it fits him. He's also Tristan and Yusei from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Rob Paulsen's Raph is nice too.
Sean Astin, 2012 Raphael, was my favourite. His voice sounded like a real 15 yr old teenager the most; he was angry, moody but also caring and loving towards his brothers and Astin managed to capture all that. His voice acting was also phenomenal, especially during the scene after Shredder through Splinter down the drain (The Invasion Pt. 2)

But hey I guess my 22 years living on this planet just vanished and I’m now automatically a kid
Greg Abbey and Nolan North are pretty much on par with each other in potraying Rapheal as the short tempered muscle. Sean Astin's not too far behind. Rob Paulsen's good for the sarcastic moments, but Raph wasn't who he should be in the 80's. And Matt Hill really tried his hardest to capture Raph's attitude problem, but it's just not working like it should. It's too bad "Next Mutation" was in 97, or they probably could've cast Matt Hill for Mike and he would've worked perfectly. As it is, he's probably the weakest.
I love Paulson as Raph, but he was never playing the real Raph. They had to tone down his character to just be kinda of a sarcastic ass instead of a Turtle with a short fuse. Paulson is actually better as the current Donatello on the Nick series. For me its Pais, North and Austin.
@ BladeBlur I agree Nolan North was a great Raphael, would have loved to have him voice Raph in a second CGI animated movie(which sadly never happened, but that is another story for another day). Rob Paulsen WAS 2012 Donatello in addition to playing the original cartoon incarnation of Raphael. In fact, when Rob Paulsen first came in to the studio to do the lines for Donatello, Sean Astin (Raphael) and Jason Biggs (Leonardo) were practically bowing down to him, having learned they were working with the original Raphael (Which says a lot, given that both Astin and Biggs are both successful movie stars). As far as Rob Paulsen's voice being "out of character", well, Raphael was a very different character back then. In the original comics, the Turtles' personalities weren't terribly different. It was the original cartoon that first tried to differentiate the Turtles a bit more by exaggerating their personalities. TheHeroesOfCRASH I got to admit, when I first heard Rob Paulsen was going to voice 2012 Donnie, I was pretty shocked...for about 30 seconds. While I loved 80s Raph, he didn't have a whole lot of character aside from being the smart aleck of the group. Since we've had so many iterations of "tough, moody Raph" since the 1990 movie and beyond, that seems to be the version people prefer (myself included). Mr. Paulsen has voiced bad ass characters before (Vinnie from "Biker Mice"), but he's done plenty of nerds, so Donnie was a shoe-in. Plus, this way I get the best of both worlds. When I was a kid, I always loved both Donnie and Raph equally, but I loved Donnie more for his character and Raph for his jokes/voice acting. Having Paulsen voice this Donnie and my favorite hobbit voicing Raph just makes me so giddy! (And Sean Astin does a GREAT job! Just watch "Cockroach Terminator" to see why!)
I thought Laurie Faso pulled off that Brooklyn accent really well for Raphael's voice of the 1991 second live action movie as Josh Pais did for Raphael's voice of the 1990 first live action movie.
Rob Paulsen was the definitive Rapheal 2. Greg Abbey who brought that attitude for Rapheal 3. Nolan North who continued where Greg Abbey left off 4. Sean Astin who great playing the current Raphael
Greg Abey’s great. Love Sean Astin’s younger take of Raph too. Depending on the art style of the comics, I alternate between those 2 voices in my head when reading their dialogue.
I would have to say that my favorite voices of Raphael throughout the years are Rob Paulsen (1987-1996 animated series), Laurie Faso (1991 second live action movie), Matt Hill (The Next Mutation 1997-1998 live action TV series), Greg Abbey also known under the aliases as Frank Frankson and John Campbell (2003-2009 animated series), Nolan North (2007 CGI movie), Sean Schemmel (Turtles Forever 2009 animated TV movie), AND Sean Astin (2012/current TV series). I wish Rob Paulsen had still voiced as the 1987 version of Raphael again also for the 2009 animated TV movie "Turtles Forever" instead of Sebastian Arcelus 4:05 who had filled in for Rob Paulson, And I also wish Laurie Faso 1:46 who was the voice of Raphael for the 1991 second live action movie had voiced as Raphael also for the 1990 first live action movie instead of Josh Pais 1:29 and also for the 1993 third live action movie instead of Tim Kelleher 2:20, Because I like Laurie Faso as Raphael's voice better than Josh Pais and Tim Kelleher, And I also wish Matt Hill who was the voice of Raphael for The Next Mutation 1997-1998 live action TV series had still voiced as The Next Mutation version of Raphael for the crossover episode "Shell Shocked" of Power Rangers In Space (1998) too instead of whoever filled in for Matt Hill, And I also wish they had found someone else who sound simular to Sean Astin to voice as Raphael for the Out Of The Shadows 2013 game that was based on the 2012/current TV series instead of Carlos Alazraqui 5:04 and to voice as Raphael for the 2014 movie too instead of Alan Ritchson 5:26. And I hated when Thom Pinto filled in for Rob Paulsen as Raphael's voice for two the episodes "The Ninja Sword of Nowhere and The Turtle Terminator" of Season 3 of the 1987 animated series in 1989, when Hal Rayle also filled in For Rob Paulsen as Raphael's voice of the 13 Turtles European Vacation episodes of Season 7 in 1993, AND when Michael Gough also filled in for Rob Paulsen as the voice of Raphael for the very last 8 episodes of Season 10 of the 1987 animated series in 1996. And I wish TheGeneration West had used a screenshot image and voice recordings of Raphael from one of the earlier episodes "Turtle Tracks" of Season 1 of the 1987 animated series at 0:06, a double screenshot image and voice recordings of Raphael of the two episodes "The Ninja Sword of Nowhere and The Turtle Terminator" of Season 3 of the 1987 animated series at 0:35, a screenshot image and voice recordings of Raphael from one of the earlier episodes "Tower of Power" of Season 7 of the 1987 animated series at 0:52, a screenshot image and voice recording of the 1987 version of Raphael of the episode "Wormquake" of season 2 of the 2012/current TV series, AND a screenshot image and voice recordings of Raphael from one of the earlier episodes "The Return of Dregg" of the very last Season 10 at 1:12 too, AND I also wish TheGenerationWest had used backgrounds of the different logos of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV shows and movies throughout the years behind the pictures of the character and voice actors instead of using the same background of the R initial of Raphael's name!
I really like Greg Abbey's voice, But Sean Astin actually sounded like a 15 year old boy. It matched the age and personality of the character, which I really really liked.
Rob Paulson will always be the man but, Greg Abbey and Nolan North! :D how can I forget?! both my childhood. I really do adore Sean Astin's Raph. He manages to mix the badass Raph we know all while keeping him as a teenager. Let's be honest, Greg made Raph sound like a 25 year old when he was actually 15.

***** I preferred the first movie Raph myself. Actually, I prefer the first movie period....
Rob Paulsen is Donnie 2012 version OMGosh!!!,!,!
Sean Astin
Tom Hardy😡 as Raphael❤️🐢🍕😡
Rob Paulsen was the definitive Rapheal
2. Greg Abbey who brought that attitude for Rapheal
3. Nolan North who continued where Greg Abbey left off
4. Sean Astin who great playing the current Raphael
Frank 03 raphael best ever ultimate badass
Sean Astin is the perfect Raph to me. He's brought so many more sides to him than any of the others did.
Its gonna be Sean Astin.
You mean Sam from Lord of the rings
Tom Hardy😡 playing Raphael❤️🐢🍕😡
Sean Austin and Alan Ritchson are my favorite voices ....they just give me shivers
Greg Abey’s great. Love Sean Astin’s younger take of Raph too. Depending on the art style of the comics, I alternate between those 2 voices in my head when reading their dialogue.
Greg Abbey is the goat IMO he has the perfect mix of Hot head, New Yorker, and genuine care for his family.
Greg Abby!!! Ma main man! Also, Sean Astin.
0:06 Rob Paulsen
3:05 Greg Abby
3:42 Nolan North
4:24 Sean Astin
They're all great in their own way. Love Sean Astin and Josh Pais the most but I don't think Alan Ritchson gets enough credit!
josh pais, no question. he was the first to give raph the tough, new yorker voice that has become synonymous with the character.
Greg Abbey, Nolan North and Alan Ritchson capture the character perfectly ☕🥯🍩
I really like Greg Abbey's voice, But Sean Astin actually sounded like a 15 year old boy. It matched the age and personality of the character, which I really really liked.
Nolan north is criminally underrated as raph. And Alan is just so fantastic
Josh Pais, Greg Abbey, Nolan North, Alan Ritchson
Rob, Nolan, and Sean are my favorite Raphaels.
Rob Paulson who was the 1987 Rapheal voice over
Honestly the 90s films. Different actors but still a heavy new Yorker accent, 2003 series, 2007 film.
Josh Pais was the best one
Right? Not even a contest.
The Best Raphael voices
1. Greg Abbey
2. Nolan North
3. Sean Astin
When it comes to Raph, I always think of Knuckles but as a turtle, Greg fits the bill with his voice and attitude right there.
Greg Abbey and Sean Astin were the best Raph's.
