First time I viewed a video mentioning to widen the pad spring which makes sense. Brake rub with these disc brakes only happens with my front tire and it is an ongoing problem. I fix it but it eventually comes back. Rim brakes are so much easier to deal with than these disc brakes. The engineering of the disc brakes is lacking. Hopefully the bike industry will fix this problem. I shouldn't have to constantly have to deal with this headache. Thanks for the video.

I know you put this video out over 5 years ago but wanted to say thanks. I spread the springs with a small screwdriver and it fixed the problem. I don’t think the pistons were retracting all the way back in as I’d get rub for about 10 seconds after braking. Really appreciate the video!!

I just got my road bike. After around 20 years of mountain bike with standard disk brakes . And i did not know how to adjust brake pads on hidraulic Shimano 105 brakes.

Thanks for the video, it really saved me. When I bought my bike with my first set of disc brakes the shop gave me a little orange plastic spacer to fit between the brake pads for when I remove the wheel. He said if the spacer is not there and at some point the brake level gets "pulled" i.e. bumped or rested against something, the calipers will squeeze together more than they should, and stay that way. The result is the disc may no longer fit between the pads, or fit too snugly. I take my front wheel off frequently and the spacer does the trick - except when I forget. If this happens to you, the key part of the video is at about 3 minutes when he uses a screw drive to push the pistons back in. I had to push pretty hard, but slowly they went back in, then everything fit again.

Yeah, removing the break rub on the stand is easy. Not having it reappear when riding is another ball game. On my bike it simply reappears at times and I don't think I can do anything about it except simply learning to live with it, although it is annoying. On the last ride it got really loud on the front wheel at around 80 mile mark, after I think I hit a bigger pot hole, then after about a minute with some repeated activation of the brake lever it went quiet again. I ride mainly flat courses activating the brakes sparsely so no chance of overheating to occur. The bike is new, top brand and top price tag frame set and has maybe 500 miles done so far, with a stock Shimano wheelset with Shimano Ultegra discs.

Check also that the piston faces and pad packing plates are free of contamination. I think he might of done this without being obvious about it, but if the disc is just slightly warped,, loosening/tightening the calipers at different places on the disc's rotation will alter the centering slightly, possibly enough to 'split the difference' and avoid rubbing.

Tried everything on this video and the r8000 rotors seem to be too thick for the r7000 calipers.

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

no, they are not. the shimano rotors are all the same thickness. and even if they were not, there is much more clearance in the calipers. i am using 2.25mm thick heavy duty mtb rotos instead of the 1.7mm thin shimanos without problem.
you might not have a problem with the calipers, but more with the pads beeing too close.
      remove the pads.
      remove the wheel.
push the pistons all the way back into the calipers.
      put wheel back on.
adjust the caliper by eye so that the disc rotor runs straight in the middle.
      put the pads back in.
pump the brake untl it has a bite point again. the pistons will now have adjusted to the rotors thickness.
if your aligning by eye was good, this might be enough to have a perfectly aligned brake. the rotors should not be bent in any direction when pulling the brake. otherwise you can now try to re-align the calipers.
it is best to do this with new (or even worn pads). if one pad is more worn than the other, or one piston moves more than the other, it gets more complicated.

I really like your videos, they saved me a lot of time, grievances and money. I have a problem with my front disc brake, same as you show in the video, new Dura Ace 9170 with flat mount. I have installed the new caliper, new rotor, new brake pads, all centered, rotor is reasonably true. When I riding straight or in the workstand, there is no rubbing. When I am getting out of the saddle for sprinting or climbing, or in the workstand when I turn the handle bar sharply to the left, the rotor rubs the pads. No significantly but it annoys. I tried everything from re-aligning, lubing and execising the pistons, bleeding etc., no succes. Wheels and hubs are also new from a quality brand. Any idea what can cause this or does the brake need more time to settle in?

if it is a constant problem you either have a piston thats not really going back into the caliper, or bent rotors. the shimano ones are not my favourite either. you can try to straighten them, but from my experience, they most of the time go out of true again after one or two hard braking maneuvers. simpler one piece designs, like from magura or trickstuff seem to work much better in this regard. at least for me.

Digi20 rotors are bent due to the heat, especially after downhills when you use the brakes more and for longer period. Most of the times you dont need do to anything about it, on the next ride it usually corrects itself (rubbing stops after a couple of brakings). I hate it as well and tried multiple times to bend the rotor back, adjust the caliper positions etc - after mountain intervall trainings. But I found that these efforts are almost useless - it usually rubs after heavy breakings and usually disappears during an endurance ride.

Great video, I'm hoping that I can replicate what you have done. Typically, would we find that removing the front wheel interferes with the alignment? I wouldn't expect it to but mine may look great in a stand and spin forever but after a ride the pads seem so much closer together. Brakes don't appear to need bleeding - I'm hoping that having a bit of a play with the metal prongs which hold the pads might help. It is so frustrating on new wheels with Dura Ace pads like yours! Part of me wants to sell them and buy a rim frameset!

Hydraulic brakes are the dumbest most retarded thing they ever made for bicycles. Not a single bike has ever needed Hydraulic but they kept pushing them because of marketing idiots working at these bike companies. I sold a bike with a hydraulic brakes because nothing would solve the disc rub issue, I went with a cheaper model and got cheap Tektro Mechanical diskbrakes and its been a dream, can adjust anything with ease that uses a regular cable.

Please could I ask about where it rubs in only one spot when you span the wheel. I thought that by definition that has to mean a bent rotor. How can loosening off the bolts, and squeezing the brake on and then retightening the calliper bolts, solve this? Thank you.

    • @thisandthatandotherthings

I resorted to using my rotor truing tool to resolve a one point rub - you might be able to average the deviation with adjustment at random points of rotor to eliminate the rubbing noise as appears to have been achieved here but you might also get the rubbing noise back when you load the bike with your body weight

I can manage to get them running silent on the stand but as soon as I put some heat through the rotor it seems to rub again until it’s cooled down. Is this expansion of the rotor? I have the same dura ace rotors as in this video. I’ve tried with two different wheelsets and get the same result. Driving me crazy!

Must be the disc expanding slighty, never had that before it may go away when the pads wear.

No discs are better than my Campagnolo Super Record rim brakes.

You don’t have this issue with rim brakes...your avg Joe wouldn’t know how to fix this. Don’t get me wrong I have a disc gravel bike, find the industry over hypes the tech. Keep it simple ..

M Lee You’re correct in one sense, but not always. Especially if changing wheelsets with different rim widths. Pretty easy adjustment. I will disagree though on the idea of the industry overhyping the tech. There is no better braking, whether be the power or modulation that disc brakes. I live where we have flats, rollers and mountains nearby and can tell you that disc brakes are a wonder while descending. Not only that, the consistency of braking is superior across all conditions.

This is so dumb, omg. I own a disc brake road bike. Would never buy one again, just because if that. Fck that modulation, I want silence

Disc brakes suck! A four thousand dollar bicycle should not require such a waste of time. What a con. I have ridden thousands of miles on rim brakes, never a problem with brake rub nor lack of stopping power.

Yeah I just completely took my break off and threw it away I’m gonna go back to the old style. Way too complicated and hard to work on I can’t even imagine trying to work on these out on the road 😬
