My R8070 calliper has always had one lazy piston, no amount of bleeding or cleaning has ever fixed it. Tried all methods and finally given up, I’m just getting a new calliper
Great video - quick Q, looking to upgrade to latest 105 rear calliper, is it 100% ok to reuse the barb/insert? I could probably cut some of the hose down but would prefer to keep it simple and just replace the olive
FreetoCycle....My rear ultegra R8070 pad bolt has seized and its that brittle it has splittered away where the screw driver should go.Have you any tips on how to get this bolt out.Thanks.
I have drilled them out in the past but not a very practical way of removing them! Basically a new Caliper if it’s that badly seized in there! Thankfully the r8170 has the alllen key and not that silly screwdriver fitting!
It's such a common issue, the flat head bots are so soft. I thought mine was well and truly stripped, but a electrician mate of mine managed to force a very well fitting flathead screwdriver into it and got it to turn. lots and lots of penetrating spray was used.
I'll be doing this upgrade in a couple of weeks myself. I was going to take it to my LBS but after watching this video, it looks straightforward to do. Questions though. Will the hose come pre-fitted to either the calliper or the lever? I presume I'll need a total of four olives? Do they generally come in a kit or will I need to purchase these on top? Would this affect the seal performance as the cable already looks a little pre-crushed in your video where the olive used to be? Thanks!
Andy, the Calipers don’t make any difference to the feel or stopping performance compared to the R8070 version! The new calipers use exactly the same pads and the pistons are the same diameter as before! The difference is they offer a little more pad clearance that before.
So there’s more piston travel? I’m guessing there’s something clever going in as the lever travel surely isn’t affected? Clearance is a good thing as long as you’re not increasing lever travel
@@McDonaldPhotography 10% of 2mm is 0.2mm..ain t much..I was thinking about switching to the new calipers from the r8070 but I don't know if it's worth really. Some real world useage feedback would be great tho
@@_shaqz_my 8070 calipers never advance the piston as pads wear down (I stripped one down to try and solve it without success). Which means the lever goes spongy relatively quickly and needs some fiddling to rectify. So I’m going to give this a go on the basis they can’t be any worse.
Thanks for this video! I've been looking all over if the R8170 caliper upgrade worked with the the R8070 Sri's... Quick question, have you tried Ultegra 8070 sti levers with Dura Ace R9270 calipers? As I was already upgrading, was thinking of going with monoblock option 😅
I’ve got a set of the Dura Ace monoblocks to fit to my bike at some point. May get the R8170 pad pins as the Dura Ace pins still have slotted head on them
Help! Have a 160mm rotor. The Calliper bracket mount says “for 140 or 160” on one side and for “160 or 180” on the other side. Which side can I use for my 160mm rotor?…Tks
@@FreeToCycle Tks. The rotor is a Shimano 105 160mm. On my Specialized gravel bike the rotor is an Ultegra 160 but the bracket for the front derailleur is set for 140 or 160. That’s what confused me. Tks for the help.
Why did you replace them? What is the benefit of the 8170? I ask because I just cracked my rear caliper while fighting to get the bolt out to change the pads. So its a new caliper I need.
8:08" so far and this seems kind of insane where you need a 'Dremel' and to replace an olive which 'of course' you can get at the drop of a hat at your local bike shop. Don't forget to clean up all that fluid and your bucket, etc.. Rim brakes for the win, even though, I guess thanks to biz & marketing, they'll likely lose.
Glad I found this video thank you. I knew the olive had to be replaced, had no idea where to start.
Love these videos, top man 👍🏻👍🏻
Always good videos was trying to figure out what that bolt snap ring was for. Thanks
Thanks for the video, very useful.👍

Same with my Grx. I went new take off 9270 dura ace calipers. Some guy bought a new bike but swapped over to SRAM.
That's a lot of air in that line!😮
Can u give link yo hex bolt, Which you have instead of the usual minus slot?
Nice to meet you.
I installed BR-R8170 on my R7020 STI. The brake pull is hard, is it a specification?
I would appreciate your answer.

Curious to know benefits of just swapping out callipers if anyone can advise
So the screw on the old ultegra cable will fit the new clamp, only forge the new pin that you cut, greetings from Poland

@@mattyno123 look for "SLX brake pad pin" on ebay, they are mtb ones with the hex fitting and fit road calipers fine

Great video. Curious if Shimano are going to upgrade GRX brakes as well
I don’t suspect so - the new road callipers have borrowed some tricks from GRX.
@@dominicbritt Yes a lot but the pad clearance which is even more important when riding in mud and grime than on the road.

What is the distance between bolt eyes on this calliper ? Can’t find the info anywhere
Thank for the video . where did you get the bleed block ( yellow piece) for this set?

any idea if they will work with non-servo wave levers? such as the 105 7020? the old br7070 calipers have a horrible habit of leaking from the pistons
Yes the new calipers will work fine with the outgoing levers!
Is the 8170 enough better to be a rational upgrade? I'm considering it.

The paint on my 8070 is bubbling and peeling. I hope these new ones don't
Got the same issue on my winter bike, rear caliper was worst but front is losing paint now too 😕
I asked shimano if these were compatible with the R8070 levers and they told me no! Is there any change to the lever throw?
No exactly the same as before! They will say they are not compatible to make you upgrade to the latest groupset!!
Shimano's compatibility chart (12JUL2022 update) shows that they are compatible. You can find the chart on Shimano's website.

How does the caliper bracket work if you wanted to upsize from 160 to 180mm front disc? Assume you still need an extra adaptor?
