I came across this channel on accident. Which was cool because I have always been interested in Venus fly traps but never got any because no one I know that had them could keep them alive. But this channel has taught me about a lot more carnivorous plants and how to actually take care of them. I will be ordering some soon and trying my hand at keeping some. You and your whole team seem extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what you do at California Carnivores. Thanks for all this.
Another great video Damon. You’re right about being patient with how long it takes sometimes for them to sprout. I harvested my own fresh seeds and they still took a few months before sprouting. Probably the most rewarding plant I’ve grown from seed and like you say preparation is key.
I got some Nepenthes seeds unexpectedly when I ordered a Rajah x Mira and Burbidgeae x Petiolata from a nursery in France, he threw them in as a freebie. I didn't know what I was doing with the sudden seeds so I just chopped some Long Fiber spaghnum moss, mixed it with perlite, microwaved it and sowed them. Put them in a bag and left em. 3 weeks later, today, they sprouted and I don't know what I'm doing LMAO but this video helped alot! The seeds are Nepenthes Lowii x (Veitchii x Platychila). Thank you for the video!
Oh my God, Damien you are so great to watch and listen to. Just ordered my first mini bog and planted it last night. Love my new hobby I’d love to find you on facebook!
I'm so excited. I found this channel when I was looking through plant chennels. I had a couple Venus fly traps when I was a teenager and thought I kept killing them. After watching these videos I realized they were probably going dormant, ahhhh. I'm definitely ready to try again, especially now that I've learned about them from this channel.
Yay! Definitely try them again! Lots of people have been fooled by the Venus flytrap dormancy! They’re such fun plants to grow and there are so many carnivorous plants that you can find one that’s right for your growing conditions.
I really love your videos and I really needed to see this video because I got some seeds! And, I also very happily noticed that you ship seeds to EU as well and I will definitely get some red flytrap ones to try out some time in the summer!
Another great enjoyable video. I had a question for the smaller NEPENTHES I have them in a terrarium. Do they need more air to do well? I don’t want them to get moldy, but I heard they need high humidity. I have them on a windowsill in the northeast in a east window
Great instructional video. I started growing Nepenthes from seed for about a year ago. I am a purist species grower. Didn't catch the type of fertilizer you use. But I have been lightly misting with Maxsea about 1/4 the recommended amount with fine results.
Só jealous of the Nepenthes vogelii!! The person it was named after (Art Vogel) worked at the botanical gardens of the city I live in. I'd lóve to keep this species in his honor, since he died a few years back. I assume they are very rare, since I can't find them from a source where I know they are not taken from the wild.
Great video 🙌🏽 so a little bit of peroxide mixed in water then spray the potting mix to sanitize it to help the nepenthes seeds germination success rate
Hi @Damon, Thanks for the video. I just sowed highland nepenthes seeds, keep them next to my highland nep in grow tent. Currently 20 - 23 celsius temp range the day / around 14 celsius at night. Min 80% humidity. Do you think its ok ? no need to warm up or bag them ? Thanks
@@California_Carnivores Thanks for the reply. I moved them in more intermediate condition to speed up germination. It's been only 17 days since sowing. W&S
We will mist with a little bit of diluted Maxsea or OrchidPro fertilizer after they germinate. It’s a fine balance between fertilizing the plants and not getting the moss or other opportunistic plants a chance to grow.
I've enjoyed watching this video on growing Nepenthes from seed, which I'm going to try. Regards feeding them would you also recommend a foliar feed ? If so what would you recommend please. Thank you Peter
After the germinate it’s a delicate balance; you’ll want to remove the dome before they start to rot but the dome does keep out all the bad stuff like fungus gnats and spores. We tend to take the domes off fairly quickly after the seeds germinate to prevent rot since it can take out a tray quite fast. Then, we watch the tray carefully and even mist it to help the plants transition
Our favorite method is to put it in an instant pot with water and cook it for 15 minutes! You can also put it in a bowl, add water, cover with cling wrap and microwave it.
We keep them in our greenhouse which doesn’t drop below normal house temperatures. It can be beneficial to use a seedling heat mat to help with germination as well
@@California_Carnivoreswhats the maximum temperature the seeds can tolerate? im wondering if i can sow some Nep seeds in my balcony windowsill but it can get to 90-100F degrees (sometimes higher short peaks) in mid summer and this might not be the best time to sow some Nep seeds.
We do sterilize the coco peat. It is more likely to cause fungus than the sphagnum but in our experience the moss grows slower on the surface of the coco peat which is beneficial for the Nepenthes.
Im not great at seeds of anything but I'm pretty good at all other propagation methods 😂 when mine gets a little bigger im going to see if i can get it to root via air layering while still on the plant.
We water in the Nepenthes seedlings once every week or every other week (depending on how fast the moss grows) with 1/8 teaspoon of Maxsea diluted into one gallon of distilled water.
Was wondering if you guys can do a video on how to grow nepenthes in a aquarium tank. I've seen some videos but they all ask for artificial light and wanted to know if you can grow nepenthes in a tank with just sun (if possible).
I’ll add that to our list of videos! While I have grown Nepenthes successfully in a tank in a window, it’s a little tricky. You’ll need a very sunny window to keep them producing pitchers but you’ll need to make sure they’re not cooking in the tank in the sun.
I don't know how you do it. I have this exact same brand of coco coir, rinsed it thoroughly like you did, and transplanted a whole bunch of Nepenthes seedlings into it a couple years ago. About 95% of them grew very poorly in it even with fertilization. Move them back into LFS, and they perk right up.
That’s the funny thing about plants, there’s a little bit of magic in it for each grower so what works for us may not work for you. Your magic is in that LFS!
It’s ok to use Hydrogen peroxide in the water to prevent algae growth? Can we water or plants with it or it will damage them? I know it’s fine for seeds, but, for plants?
We’re still experimenting with that a little bit but we use it on germinating seedlings. We mist them with a very diluted mix of hydrogen peroxide and water. We don’t currently know how safe it is to put in the water.

Awesome! I was one of the people petitioning for this video lol
😄
I can't find the video Damon said he was going to make at 3:50, did it ever get made? I would love to learn more about Nepenthes seed storage!
great video! Thanks for making informative content

Thanks for sharing that :) As seeds aren't technically living plants 'yet', do you ship them to Canada?
We can ship seeds outside of the US!
Hello Do i need to use a sandwich bag in a place like Fiji which is very humid ...its the rainy season right now
I would skip it there!

They don't need that much humidity. What's comfortable and good for people will work for nepenthes, 40-50%.
They enjoy humidity and appreciate it but, when they are little, it is a delicate balance. We do keep them in high humidity but check them frequently.
Great instructional video. I started growing Nepenthes from seed for about a year ago. I am a purist species grower. Didn't catch the type of fertilizer you use. But I have been lightly misting with Maxsea about 1/4 the recommended amount with fine results.
We do mist with diluted Maxsea twice a month and use Osmocote slow release fertilizer pellets 14-14-14
What do you use to fertilize them?
We use diluted Maxsea or OrchidPro

It is a spectacular plant! They are rare in cultivation but if you can find one, they are worth it to grow!

Yes! We apply it when we see a little mold growing
Thanks Damon!

That sounds like good conditions! How are they doing?
@@California_Carnivores Thanks for the reply. I moved them in more intermediate condition to speed up germination. It's been only 17 days since sowing. W&S
What do I fertalize my seedlings with before they get pitchers?
Apply diluted Maxsea fertilizer to the leaves. 1/4 teaspoon Maxsea into 1 gallon of distilled water
How do you fertilize the seedlings after they have sprouted? What causes best results?
We will mist with a little bit of diluted Maxsea or OrchidPro fertilizer after they germinate. It’s a fine balance between fertilizing the plants and not getting the moss or other opportunistic plants a chance to grow.
I've enjoyed watching this video on growing Nepenthes from seed, which I'm going to try. Regards feeding them would you also recommend a foliar feed ? If so what would you recommend please.

You can foliar feed with Maxsea (diluted 1/4 teaspoon in 1 gallon of distilled water) twice a month. We mist it on!
Can Maxsea be used on grown picture plants?
Yes! Apply to the pitchers and inside them if you can.
How long should you keep them in a bag/under humidity dome?
After the germinate it’s a delicate balance; you’ll want to remove the dome before they start to rot but the dome does keep out all the bad stuff like fungus gnats and spores. We tend to take the domes off fairly quickly after the seeds germinate to prevent rot since it can take out a tray quite fast. Como se esteriliza el sphagnum moss?
Where do you get that watering can? It's perfect
It’s a Dramm watering can and you can find them at nurseries or online 😃
How is sphagnum moss sterilized?
Our favorite method is to put it in an instant pot with water and cook it for 15 minutes! You can also put it in a bowl, add water, cover with cling wrap and microwave it.
What sphagnum moss do you use? I have been using “Better Grow”, but am not sure about it. Thanks for any info you could share.
We use the BesGrow in the orange packaging
Can I ask you if you keep them at a specific temperature? thank you in advance
We keep them in our greenhouse which doesn’t drop below normal house temperatures. It can be beneficial to use a seedling heat mat to help with germination as well

Fertilizing them what do you mean, which fertilizer, what dose , ( in case of seedlings)

Hi! May i know the measurements of hydrogen-water that you use? Is it safe to use to other carnivorous plants (vft, drosera etc) as well? TIA!
We use 1/2-1/4 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide into one of our large misting bottles of distilled water and you can that on other seedlings as well
i like yer cat!
He’s such a good cat! 🥰

It just depends on the Nepenthes flowers in the nursery - they’re on their own schedule 😊
It’s ok to use Hydrogen peroxide in the water to prevent algae growth? Can we water or plants with it or it will damage them? I know it’s fine for seeds, but, for plants?
