    Josh I feel your pain I lost a john deere combine shortly after I started farming. The 9600 combine was a great machine. I am glad that the fire department was able to save quite a bit of the machine and the head as well. Thanks for sharing Brandon and thanks for being a great friend and being there for Josh

    My heart breaks for Josh. A young man working hard and this happens. I’m glad he has you going forward as he gets back on his feet. I’m thinking he needs an L1 in his future.
    You are so correct about machines and fire. They’re totaled in the first seconds! By the time you in-ass it, she’s gone. Thank you for sharing this.

    We had a local farmer lost his life a few years ago because he drove the combine away from the standing corn. In the few minutes her moved the combine it grew bad enough he was badly burned and passed.
    It is a very dangerous situation.

    Damn! Those newer machines carry so much fuel onboard and in a plastic tank. Once the heat gets into it, you gotta save your self! I had a motor fire years back on a 915 IHC. Working at night, smelled it but didn't see it till I pulled alongside the truck to unload. Wall of flames from the motor shields. I let it run and unload while I hit the fire with the extinguisher! Saved it! The engine fan kept the heat and flames directed out the side rather than spread. The alternator shorted out and set the bean debris on fire. Looked it over a bit, never shut it down but went back to finish that field. That vintage of machine didn't have all the clutter and extras as these newer ones. An old time custom harvester told us that trick about not shutting it off. You can still maneuver a bit and dump the bin contents while still able, once it's stopped, your done! Those beans in the tank also are fuel for fire so if you can dump them, all the better. That and the air stream from the fan keeps the fire directed away from internals.

I have a lot of attachments for when you do can attach to your machines I love this machine but like I mentioned, I’m sorry for your loss. I don’t run big equipment like you guys do but I enjoy watching my little two series tractor it’s 38 hp with a turbo diesel. It’s 40 hp it does everything I wanted to do. In TN, we mostly deal with hay baler fires. Not even close to the dollar amount in this loss. My heart breaks for our farmers, the bread basket of America. Please keep us posted, as to any needs the farmer may have from this. I will contribute to the support of getting them back to what they do best, putting food on our tables!

    Maybe thirty or so years ago, I was working in the rice harvest and the IH I was running had TWO engine compartment fires. It survived both. The last one, I was trying to pick up lodged material and caught a dirt clod. Going to the back of the machine for a wrench, I saw the engine burning and managed to put it out with an extinguisher. Good thing because there was a strong wind that day. I suspect that harvester was sold off after that harvest.

    That's sickening to watch. A person feels so helpless. Last year my little JD 4400 caught on fire in the engine compartment - the wiring in the alternator shorted and burning plastic dripped down on some chaff that was in there. I smelled and saw some smoke - luckily the engine compartment is right beside the cab. I caught it early enough that I could get it put out with a fire extinguisher. It melted the wiring harness, the alternator, and some hoses. But the combine is simple enough that we were able to get things back in shape in about 4 hours the next day and it was running again. God was with me.

    A year ago November, we had a bearing goo out in the header of the combine. By the time I saw the fire in the corn, the combine operator had seen it. I called 911, he called a neighbor that happened to have his VT hooked up.
    The VT nearly had all the fire out before the FD got there, and the combine never caught on fire.
    It was pretty scary feeling watching the corn catch on fire while I had drove over the corn with the duals and the big grain cart to keep fire from spreading in the standing corm.
    We were real lucky the wind was out of the south east that day, and everything west was picked off.

    What a terrible ordeal. So sorry this happened to you, Josh. This takes me back to 1973 when Dad had just bought a brand new JD 4400 and it caught fire and was a total loss. The insurance replaced it with another new 4400. The first one had a gas engine and it lacked power and so Dad got one with a diesel engine in the new one. I still remember how Dad complained about the $40,000 price tag on that new combine. LOL. Dad died in 1983 but if Dad was still alive I think he would be completely shocked with the price of new farm equipment today with the $1M combines and $500K tractors. I am shocked too. Dad sure liked the power of that new diesel combine though. It never bogged down like the gas 4400 did.

    We moved from JD to New Holland combines here in Australia after experiencing regular small fires. The time it took to clean out the machines every 4 hours made then unviable as they aged. I hate that the fuel tank is plastic on these machines. At least the drive tires are still up. That will make it easier to haul out. I remember as a kid my neighbor had an IH 715 gas combine. It was running in the yard when he looked over and saw flames coming out of the fan cleaner on right side. He threw it in reverse hit the throttle and backed it out away from the buildings and when the engine started missing he bailed out.

    As expensive as those machines are and as fast as they burn, you would think that they could be equipped with a fire suppression system. Especially, in the engine compartment. It wouldn't cost all that much. It's one of the least expensive systems on an aircraft and the easiest to maintain.

    • @rearspeaker6364

      if it worked effectually, and there was demand, they would make it.

    • @ToddKing
      @ToddKing ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought of that. I think the issue would be that the fires don't tend to be a problem until the machines are older.
      1.) Will the guy buying the machine new want to pay for a system that might benefit the 2nd or 3rd owner.
      2.) Would the system still be viable by the time the machine is old enough to warrant having it without incurring a lot of maintenance costs along the way.
      There are probably others but I think the idea has possibilities.

    • @johnalexander4356
      @johnalexander4356 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToddKing I don't know why it isn't done, other than expense. The systems are really simple. One of more pressurized containers of the fire suppressant, an electrically or manually controlled valve, and plumbing. The nozzles are just open tubes aimed as needed. Maybe add flame sensors and idiot lights. The down-side is accidental activation. The powder is a mess and has to be cleaned out as soon as possible. And I'm sure an engine would not like sucking it in, but that shouldn't happen.

    • @ToddKing
      @ToddKing ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnalexander4356 Race cars use Halon in there fire suppression systems. It's is a gas that leaves no residue to clean up and doesn't hurt the engine. The downside is that it's spendy. I heard that Dupont had developed a replacement but I have no idea about cost.

    • @johnalexander4356
      @johnalexander4356 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToddKing happy is probably the best option, but it is hazardous if breathed. Most everything has some hazards. I don't recall it being very expensive, but it's been a long time since I replaced any. It can be bought at any any shop that maintains and certify extinguishers. It's a powder under a nitrogen charge.

    This is back when farmers bought equipment to use for life. All farm machinery/implements had to be extremely robust, easy to use and simple to work on so everyone could successfully operate/maintain the equipment. Ever watch farming channels in 2023? Tractors are $775k, planters $250k and up, a combine will set ya back a cool million. They’re extremely complex machines with more software and computing power that’s plotted by satellite than NASA uses to launch those satellites. They monitor planting down to the seed (singulation, one seed) and plant using air pressure, the computer monitors and tracks each seed while steering the tractor/combine/planter by gps. You can cover hundreds of acres a day with just a few people, where when this equipment was used it was extremely labor intensive, took more people, planted less acreage. But watch a modern operation go down, equipment not function properly and it’s utter chaos. I love the type of farming in this video, if we keep going like we are, this will be the only type of farming that will be able to function and the people that know how to do it indispensable. The worlds on its way to where it’s going and I’m not sure how that will turn out but the Bible is pretty clear about it.

      The 915 machines that were bad for fire were the early ones with the V8 gas truck motors. The things ran hot and sometimes the spark plug wires caught fire and set it off, sometimes the carb would over flow and cause it. When those engines were working, at night you could see the manifolds glowing bright red! This was the norm! It's no wonder they caught fire. Harvester had a lot of grief with their gas powered machines there in the 70s. As a result they mostly went all diesel power, also in answer to all the lawsuits over gas fires. My 915 was a real late one and vastly better than the first version, the year after mine was built, they released the rotors. Many of the components on that were the same as the last conventionals.

    There's no sense getting upset about it, that's why you carry insurance. It sucks, it's life, dust yourself off and get back on the horse

  • @michael84549

    The onnly reason a combine goes up in flames usually is the driver does not keep them blown off. The dust builds up and up they go. Just takes 15mins to do it with a mobil air compressor . Only themselves to blame. Not observant enough.

      Should be at the end of a long hard day. Ready to go tomorrow. Besides, leaving it sit overnight, is asking for trouble. I came across one burning vid. and now it looks like it an everyday thing. Does insurance cover this?
