If it weren't for Claro M. Recto and Jose P. Laurel, I bet I wouldn't know this. I feel so grateful that, because of them, we were able to learn about the life and works of Rizal.

In reference to your statement at 30:14 “Umalis si Rizal ng Madrid noong January 1891 at hindi na nakabalik sa España pagkatapos nito”; with due respect Rizal went back to Spain in Barcelona on October 6, 1896 as a stopover on his way to Cuba. He was held 4 days on the ship & brought to Montjuich Prison in Barcelona for half a day where he was interviewed by Gen. Eulogio Despujol & was sent back to Manila straight to Fort Santiago.

It was the friars and those locally assigned Spanish which made our country suffered, I think Spain was'nt aware during the time.

Thanks for the updates & additional stories on Retiro Park (his namesake homestead in Dapitan), the General Exhibition of the Philippine Islands (1887), and the National Museum of Anthropology's select collection of the General Exhibition's ethno-cultural artifacts that were not on the guide-map (pdf) back in December 2017.

Thank you for your effort and hard work in making this video. This will help the Filipinos especially the students to learn more about Rizal. However, I was expecting (like other virtual walking tours) that I will be able to experience what it is like to be somewhere I am actually not, and "you" will be my eyes, ears, and feet (my body) in navigating the streets and places where Rizal went while narrating. This is more of a documentary than a virtual walking tour.
Nice presentation, very informative. I remember when I was in Madrid, the chambermaid who serviced our hotel room is a Filipina who hails from Calamba. When I asked her about the monument of Rizal and the university where the hero went to, oh....she knows nothing about it. Come think that she has been in in Madrid for more than 15 years. So sad....
It’s really very sad that most Filipinos aren’t aware of our history. Thus, the same colonial mentality exists and political mistakes repeats over and over again! About ten years ago in one of my visits back to Manila, I was searching for the precious books of Dr. Rizal, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, because I want to read them again. I went to all bookstores in Metro Manila and I was very shocked that these books weren’t being sold anymore and NOT a required reading books in school!
Btw, I visited Dr. Rizal’s ancestral home in Calamba, Laguna. I’m very surprised that the Calamba government maintained the place. Walking through the house and it’s grounds is a very surreal experience! The house was also across St. John, the Baptist Church, established in 1779 and the church baptistery where Dr. Rizal was baptized on June 22, 1861 by the then parish priest of Calamba Father Rufino Collantes and his godfather Father Pedro Casanas is a recognized National Historical Landmark (Level 1).

Very interesting..but i wonder that, with all the stories about his travelling and acomplishement.. never was mentioned the rizal children.. e.g. francisco.. after all.. he has a partner/wife when he was a young man..before he decided to go abroad , nobody even considered that his children were alive..??

Yung mga kabataan ngayon ng dahil lang sa bts biot ayaw na maging Pinoy kinakahiya nila maging pinoy samantalang to sila rizal,juan luna. Proud pa at pinagmamalaki nila sa ibang bansa na sila ay pinoy. Kaya nga may kasabihan si dr.jose Rizal na " Ang hindi mag mahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa sa hayop at malansang isda." Kaya be proud dahil pinoy ka noon pa man pinagmamalaki na ng ating mga ninuno na sila ay pinoy.
Noon at ngayon, hindi nawala ang colonial mentality…the general Filipino thinks like Dona Victorina, a character in Dr. Rizal’s book who is a pure Filipina but acts like a Spaniard!
Spain is the mother country! Nothing will change that.
I'm a Filipino and I believe it was a mistake disassociating ourselves from Spain and getting rid of Spanish as an official language. I'm in the United States right now and learning Spanish. It feels like a lost part of my identity resurfacing when I learn the language and can understand the works of Rizal and the words of our past national heroes and presidents uttered in the original language Spanish.

Wowwww! This is great! I just lately understood how important the works of Dr. Jose Rizal during the Spanish regime. It's clear that it was dissatisfaction of native Filipinos of Spanish governance which we cannot blame Spain at that time. I think if we were just patient & wait for that changes, then we are now a progressive colony & Spanish speaking country in Asia. I've visited Spain several times & l love the country very much which I always feel at home due to similarities of culture & language. Hope both governments will revive a more stronger ties wherein Filipinos can learn the language again & both nationals can visit the countries without Visa.
True. As a Filipino I believe it was a mistake getting rid of Spanish as an official language. It will forever be part of our culture and history.
Sorry but I disagree. Yes, the Filipinos during those years weren’t satisfied because of the maltreatment from the Spanish government. But I bet dissatisfaction is a just a small fraction of what they’ve had really felt! The Spaniards had done heinous crimes in the Philippines! They’ve robbed, raped, and killed innocent Filipinos! It’s heartbreaking. Imagine being a second class citizen in your own homeland. And please stop saying “if we were just patient and wait for that changes” - Spain colonised the Philippines for 333 years!!! If they’ve wanted the Philippines to progress and liberate then they could’ve done it during those years!
If you’re a Filipino, please be thankful to our national heroes and our ancestors for their sacrifices and love for our country. Without them, we wouldn’t experience the freedom that we have right now. Also, be proud that you’re a Filipino. Our culture is already rich even before the foreigners invaded us. 🇵🇭
